Biz Trends to Watch For in 2011/2012

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

What is it about your business that makes people smile? How do you give back to mother nature? And how do you combine those things with social growth?  Do you deliver information in such a way that people become convinced they must buy your product?

Keep an eye out for the four trends I describe below in 2011/2012. They prepare you for what to expect and how to act regarding your customers. If you anticipate these trends you can make them your strengths and have fun with them! You can start right away by asking yourself the questions I pose in this article. If you want more information, please let me know at esmee@studiobranding.nl. The visual article is to be found here.

1. Reflection

Something changed over the last few years across the globe; the focus has shifted from personal success to social interaction. We’ve started to value relationships and maintaining those relationships more than ever. Spiritual activities, books and philosophies have soared in popularity as well. It seems that we are rethinking how to spend the time we have in our precious lives. As we look to spend our time in more socially and spiritually conscious ways, we seek out activities that reflect this new train of thought. Initiatives like ‘Networking Festival”, a 3-day networking event where you can meet new business partners and friends at meet-ups & workshops, are examples of this new trend. Another is ‘Unity Express’, a train that drives through Europe and strives to generate close relationships between like-minded people. It’s about exchanging services, helping each other, and ultimately benefitting mother earth as well. Personal growth and meaningful connections are what we are longing for. We are in the highest layer in the Maslov pyramid.

Take this trend into consideration in your business practices. Highlight the personal aspects as well as the social values your product or service offers. Show what can be accomplished for mother earth. Key things to think about include:

rediscovering our existence on earth
embracing the moment
combining friendship and personal growth

2. Ecotechnology

As we treat life more as a precious phenomenon, we want to know more about the food we buy in the supermarket and what we put in our bodies. That places eco-technology at the forefront of our thoughts. We think about where the food comes from, how it’s made, and whether it’s environmentally friendly. For example, if we discovered the fish on our grocery store was endangered we probably wouldn’t buy it. Holland’s Marqt and Ruudmaaz supermarket is ahead of this trend, providing customers with background information on products as well as local farming information. Across the globe, seasonal products are becoming the preferred choice, and people are increasingly growing their own food, particularly herbs and veggies, at home. Modern technology goes hand in hand with this thinking because it enables us to live more efficient, sustainable, and eco-friendly lives. Many people choose their products based on the optimal combination of technical efficiency and eco-friendliness. One such product is the Ibasket, a machine that washes and dries at the same time and automatically turns off.

Regardless of your company, you can probably incorporate the main concerns of eco-technology somehow. Think about the quality and quantity of information your brand delivers. Think about what information can influence the buying process for your customer. Key ideas to keep in mind are:

fairness and transparency
do-it-yourself
food technology with advanced information
hyper intelligent machines let us handle more efficiently

3. Smile Factory

Given the current state of the world, it’s natural for people to feel insecure about the future and seek comfort in nostalgia. We also look for warmth in our families and friends to compensate for the tough environment. Both the media and politics tend to evoke “the good old days,” idealizing a time when life was more simple. It makes sense then, that the average customer desires trusted, time-proven items like handcrafted goods and traditionally made products.

Families in particular are actively seeking out products and businesses that provide comfort, that make them smile, and that create a sense of nostalgia. A wonderful local example is a ‘cognactheek,’ a shop exclusively filled with special types of brandy, sold with love. Another popular example is a gourmet bakery that makes delicious specialty breads with funny names like ‘bommy and pinsy’. These breads are well known for their certain medicinal qualities ranging from improving your digestion to giving you shiny hair.

Regardless of your business, you absolutely have the ability to make people smile. Notice what aspects of your services or products have this happy-inducing quality and keep them going! Advertise those aspects and use great visuals to make them really stand out. Key ideas to think about are:

make people forget insecurities and smile
tradition and handcraft
detail makes the difference

4. Connection

The modern individual chooses to be connected all the time.  There are some individuals who are so good at managing their connections that they actually make a profit from it! They’ve created huge networks, smartly leveraged certain relationships, and ultimately created value from their connections. Many companies are jumping on the social media/ networking bandwagon too. I predict that, within a couple of years, customer social values, as well as online network values, will be adopted in the way shareholders are treated as well. Business people aren’t the only ones benefiting this boom in connections. Students are being educated for jobs in this arena that don’t even exist yet. Particular  ‘underground societies’ and movements can establish themselves rapidly with these new connecting tools.  Being connected 24/7 contributes to the fact that we will work on a profit and priority basis in new work streams, because we can work always and everywhere. Organizations will set-up new ways of connecting with everyone that has an opinion to solve worldwide problems in a more democratic way. Successful utilizations of this concept include BetterMeans, Stand-up Inspiration, and 7 Days of Inspiration.

When thinking about your own business in relation to this trend, consider how your brand connect with customers. Think about how you shape value in those moments and messages. Also think about the media you use to get that message across. Key ideas to keep in mind are:

sharing is multiplying
always and everywhere
it’s all about value

Our first CRAVE Chat

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

Our first CRAVE Amsterdam Chat took place on thursday the 9th of December at the CASA 400.

We have invited Vera van de Ven, founder of Innearth and Catriona Ravelli of LaptopLounge to be guest speakers, sharing with us how they learned to use reflections to be more successful.

The week before the chat both Athalie, Cristina and myself had shared our own reflections on the world wide web. As I shared in my story; I’m not so much a ‘reflector’ but a fast forward type, but through thinking about the past year, digesting what happened but even more ‘how I felt’, I discovered that you need to reflect to move forward again….With firmer steps.

In a group of 10 women, Catriona moved us all by telling her story in which she had experienced that ending a business relationship (with her former businesspartner in ZZP-Adviescafé) is quite a process, even a bit scary and painfull. But if you can find within yourself what is the talent you want to explore and find eachother in sharing what you need, you can make that ending a process of respect and understanding. And move forward better knowing what it is that you want!

Vera told us about her career in banking and how she made it to the top with almost no school certificates. Not only in her career she was very strong minded; Vera also survived some serious diseases and personally I loved her story on how she worked at night to pay for her dance-lessons in which she could hang around with the boy she wanted to marry!

Vera has this wonderful concept in which she has developed a totally unique, co-created by all kinds of coaching professionals, project for personal growth and insights.

On Twitter I mentioned that the word ‘chat’ did not cover the intensity and vibe we shared with eachother this morning. Within, through and around the stories of Catriona and Vera, we could all speak up our minds and share our emotions on certain subjects and also laughed about the amount of tissues we had to hand eachother. It felt great and inspiring to recognise your own experiences through the story of someone else. Reflection indeed!

Someone in the group said “Being an entrepreneur is maybe more a lifestyle than a job” So for all women entrepreneurs out there; keep that in mind when our next CRAVE chat is coming up!

Many of you know got to know me through the activities for CRAVE Amsterdam. In CRAVE most of you have seen one side of me; the positive Yang side, full of beans and enthusiasm. But then we all have a Yin side, feminine and awaiting and more focused to the inside. Since Crave is all about growth I love to share my personal reflections with you as some of you thought me so  many. Please click to read it..

I am almost at the end of a year again. Bye 2010…… It’s gone so fast but hey what else is new? Reflect? Actually, I am a future person; I look ahead, make plans and look forward most of the time. However, some weeks ago my CRAVE Amsterdam team gathered to make our schedule for the upcoming year, because our network is much more than a book! We talked about future events for our network, what matches with our own talents and wishes and what would our community expect from us? In line with the CRAVE USA teams and brand we felt we wanted to organise a CRAVE Chat and as the date would be in december, we decided to make it a ‘reflections-chat’. Inspiration for this subject was not only the new year ahead but also the story that team member Athalie had written some weeks before on what shé had learned this year and how she had experienced working with- and for CRAVE Amsterdam entrepreneurs. So here I go. All inspired and ready to open up; What (the hell) did I learn this year? Please click to read it.

2010.. where did it go? for me…it’s been a crazy year…but it passed so fast it seemed it was yesterday. I’ve been told by my CRAVE colleagues to reflect on my past year and share what I’ve learned this year… Inspired by Athalie Stegeman and Isrid van Geuns, I sit down and write. I realize I forgot half of the stuff I did. Everything happened in a blink of an eye, it feel like in a never-ending carousel…photos slide in front of my eyes at a dizzy speed… Please click to read it.

The story of the CRAVE Amsterdam Brand Scent

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

At Casa 400 the CRAVE book launch experience will get a 4D dimension. With the sponsoring services of The Perfume Lounge the Casa 400 Hotel will get a unique CRAVE Scent. The CRAVE Amsterdam scent is a unique blend that brings together a touch of Amsterdam, Sophistication, Entrepreneurship and female proud. It is a great sensory symbol for CRAVE Amsterdam and a first for The CRAVE Company.

Most Media companies focus on publishing. At The CRAVE Company we prefer to focus on the connections. The CRAVE Amsterdam book is an important visible aspect of creating connections because of the exposure of female entrepreneurs getting connected to share business experiences and opportunities. The power of scent is one that entrepreneur Athalie Stegeman shared with Tanja Deurloo. The two entrepreneurs joined forces to develop unique custom scented gift cards which soon will be available at Audiotainment. At the booklaunch, Tanja offers CRAVE visitors the power of scent marketing services that she is delivering to business and service companies.  Did you know that the power of scent marketing is the power of emotional branding? Providing a pleasant buying experience is key in attracting new customers. But most of the importance goes to creating a loyal customer basis. The Perfume Lounge knows all about the power of scents and is offering CRAVE the 4D experience as a proof of concept. Are you curious about the CRAVE Amsterdam scent? CALL FOR ACTION: Corporate Social Responsibility

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

This week the “CSR Netherlands index” passed the milestone of 1000 proudly affiliated companies. This growth demonstrates that CSR is on the rise. Some entrepreneurs are taking ethical and social reasons, others are more of a commercially-built society. The second group is currently the largest, but there is still so much more to gain!

CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility – involves all business actions taken to focus on economic performance (profit) while respecting the social side (people) within the ecological constraints (planet): the triple-P approach.

It is about finding a balance between people, planet and profit. Often it appears that this balance leads to better results for both the company and society and therefore we call it sustainability.

Within CRAVE we have many women who are engaging their business in a sustainable manner and we would love to inspire you and all the readers with these sustainable businesses.

We like to encourage companies to investigate their options and opportunities in finding their balance between ethics and commerce.

To feel socially responsible and act upon, it is a mindset whereby female entrepreneurs prove very active and we are proud to present many inspiring examples among the CRAVE Amsterdam listing.

CALL FOR ACTION:

We like to add an sustainable sign to each CRAVE member who is engaging in CSR. Therefore we would like you to reply to us with a YES we are sustainable and preferably a brief motivation as to what you do in terms of sustainability.

All CRAVE members who reply will get the sustainable sign in their CRAVE Amsterdam spread. The CRAVE company is working on a sustainable listing on the website, if it’s ready we’ll inform you about it so that you can add your businessin the sustainable business index too.

As we are now in the middle of the design process for the CRAVE Amsterdam book we are looking forward to your prompt replies!

On behalf of the CRAVE Amsterdam team,

I am looking forward to your replies!

Insight from Makeup Artist, Sheila Patel

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Whether it’s just a hint of blush on our cheeks, a swab of lipgloss to our puckers, or a brush of mascara to our batting eyelashes, we all want to look and feel our best! However, with the plethora of make-up options out there, finding the right products can be quite overwhelming…what color foundation to use, what eyeshadows look best on a brown-eyed beauty, liquid eyeliner or pencil??? This is where renowned make-up artist, Sheila Patel comes into the picture. With a trained eye, a steady and skilled hand, she applies the right mixture of shadows and powders…Voila! You have your own customized look. Here is her expert advice and a video featuring the “Artist at Work”, enjoy!

What was the inspiration or motivation behind starting your business?

My sister in law, Xuan Thu Pham encouraged me to get back to doing something that I have excelled in in the past and all the credit goes to her for my getting back in.

What mistake have you made in your business that you will not repeat?

Overscheduling. Earlier on in my career when I just started out, there was a time when I was working continuously from one makeup client to another in a single day. Because I worked with more clients than I could manage in one day, I felt that I did not put in the effort and time that each client deserved. I wanted to give the focus and attention to each person, but with time against me, I was not able to do that. From that experience on, I never did that again. Each customer is special to me and I’ll only work on a client at a time – that is my philosophy.

What is your favorite make-up brand?

I like different makeup brands for different reasons. I use MAC, Shu Uemura, Glauca Rossi, NARS, Makeup Forever, Ben Nye, and Kryolan. In fact, I have so many different brands in my professional makeup toolbox that I can’t name all the brands I enjoy using. Each brand is uniquely used for different purposes and events such as TV or weddings. As an everyday favorite makeup brand, I like Bobbi Brown.

What defines the Bollywood style? Do you think it would cross-over to the U.S.?

I’m glad you asked me this question because so many people have different notions of what the “Bollywood style” is and what it really means. Coming from Mumbai and having worked with Bollywood and MTV – I see the different perceptions of how people view Bollywood. What defines the Bollywood style has more to do with what you see on a film set: the movie scenes, dance scenes, and the ensemble of women who dress up in extravagant attire along with the extravagant makeup to go with it. Bollywood is about glamour, visual performance artistry, and telling a story.

This is why a Bollywood style is not suitable for everyday looks. If you’ve ever seen a wedding scene from a Bollywood film, you’ll notice the rich colors, embroideries, and magnificent jewelry that the women are wearing. Also notice their makeup – it’s created and done up to be very dramatic. When you wear such beautiful clothes, your face is competing with it and pales in comparison to what you’re wearing. That’s why it has to look very dramatic.

I think it the Bollywood look can absolutely cross over to the U.S. if it’s in the wedding space. However, with everyday looks, it might be too much, especially without the costumes. But if you’re up for that look for yourself, why not?

What is your favorite make-up look for spring/summer?

I have this secret passion for the orange and yellow color theme. If it’s done well, it can really work for you. Case in point: you can use a yellow eyeshadow

and apply it over your eyelids. Then use an orange eyeshadow to contour the lids as well as the edges. Next, you can define your eyes with black eyeliner and mascara – and voila. Most people think they can’t use these colors, but you can!

What is the most common make-up mistakes you see people make?

Mismatched foundation has to be the topper on the list. This is the most common mistake I’d like to see people stop making. Coming from an Asian country, there is an obsession to have fair skin. People try to correct that by using light foundation. The end result? Your skin will end up looking grey. Also, some people tend to incorrectly use bronzers or foundation that’s too dark for them, which are really too orange for one’s face. This looks hideous.

A good indicator of using the proper foundation for yourself is to reference it in natural sunlight. Typically, when you buy it in the mall under fluorescent lighting, it’s easy to make the mistake of buying the wrong color for your skintone. What you can do is apply a small amount from the tester on your skin – step outside and see if it matches your skin. Just be true to your skin tone and be proud of your natural beauty.

There are few things I love more in life than my weekly escapes to the nail salon. I step through the doors perhaps tired or stressed or frazzled by my day-to-day, and I leave an hour or two later feeling pampered and pretty and poised. Our CRAVE Beauty Secrets Revealed

Monday, May 10th, 2010

As fabulous as every CRAVE woman is, we all could benefit from a session of beauty secret-swapping. Long days and long nights hopping from place to amazing place can take its toll on even the most impeccably gorgeous glower. To gain insight on how the girl-about-town stays looking her best, we’ve asked our resident staff at CRAVE what types of tricks were up their sleeves. And unlike other kinds of secrets, we don’t feel guilty for sharing these at all!

Hair

  • Try fabric softener for a great leave-in conditioner. Dilute a 1/2 cup with 1 cup of water and for softer, fresher locks.
  • For between shampoos: degrease oily hair with witch hazel. Apply to your roots with a cotton ball.
  • When hair starts looking dull from too many products, use translucent face powder on the roots and brush through to give hair a subtle shine.

Skin

  • To lighten age spots and sun-damaged skin, mix the juice of 1 lemon, 1 lime, 2 tablespoons of honey, and 2 ounces of plain yogurt. Gently massage into each spot weekly for noticeable results.
  • For a great body exfoliant, scrub with dried coffee grounds. The caffeine in coffee also helps to stimulate the growth of new skin cells.
  • Keep cucumbers for your salads and use raw potato slices to remove dark under-eye circles.

Makeup

  • For lips that pop, dab a little bit of red or orange color in the center to make them appear fuller.
  • To give your lashes an extra lift, warm an eyelash curler with a blow dryer before using. Lashes will stay curled for longer and this trick doesn’t even require mascara!
  • When applying blush or bronzer, you should first know where to apply your glow. Bend over for 30 seconds, then slowly stand up. Where your cheeks are flushed is where you are meant to blush. Apply your blush there for a naturally rosy look.

Monday, April 26th, 2010

We are all familiar with the old adage of Spring cleaning, but did you know that it doesn’t just apply to your closet? Spring cleaning is also important for our bodies and very helpful in flushing toxins, losing weight and creating increased energy. The best place to start your spring cleaning is with spring eating! Jamie G. Dougherty, owner and founder of JAMIE|LIVING, Health and Lifestyle Counseling, offers us a fresh approach. Spring foods are light, water-logged, and perfect for cleaning out our systems of excess junk. Some of the most popular spring foods include:

Asparagus: High in potassium and folate which aids the cardiovascular system- Roast with olive, sea salt, and pepper with a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Artichokes: A good source of iron and calcium- Steam and enjoy with your favorite vinaigrette.

Dandelion Greens: Aid in liver cleansing- Blanch, then sauté with garlic, olive oil, and top with currants and pine nuts.

Green garlic: Delicious young garlic plant that has anti-bacterial properties- A perfect addition to eggs or a frittata.

Radishes: Very high a vitamin C. Eat them raw or dip in hummus or your favorite dressing.

The best place to find spring foods it at your local farmer’s market where vendors will have the freshest produce available. Here is a perfect dish to get your started. Who ever thought spring cleaning could taste so good? Enjoy!
