Featured entrepreness The Broke Socialite (aka Shameeka Ayers) is an expert at helping you get what you crave–without paying top dollar. Blessed with a discerning eye, cursed with an affinity for all things decadent and born without a silver spoon in her mouth, The Broke Socialite defies the notion of that a beer budget automatically trumps Champagne taste. Through her blog, The Broke Socialite dispenses useful lifestyle tips, tricks and education with an austere twist.
She also keeps a very busy social calendar. Yesterday, she attended the Martha Stewart blogger show in New York City, where she dished with Miss M about buttermilk biscuits, and tomorrow, she kicks off the very first TBS event, Sugar Coma, a tour of Atlanta’s yummiest bakeries and cupcakeries. Here’s what you need to know about this sassy, savvy entrepreness:
How would you describe your business in exactly three adjectives?
Sassy, Austere, Resourceful
What are your most popular products or services?
The Broke Socialite’s ability to educate through tips, tricks, ideas and savings have built a loyal community.
People may be surprised to know…
I once babysat a prepubescent Beyonce (pre-Destiny’s child, even)…she was a normal kid.
What or who inspired you to start your business?
Unbeknownst to her, Atlanta socialite, Aida Flamm. In the midst of one of her designer tag sales, she encouraged me to follow my dreams and shared her path to success.
Who is your role model or mentor?
Oh, there are so many! The common denominators are those in my life who follow their dreams and are risk takers.
What business mistake have you made that you will not repeat?
Resting on my laurels, I launched The Broke Socialite about a year later than I should have because I was afraid no one would read it. No more fear for me!
How do you spend your free time?
Much like Pinky & The Brain, I can most be found trying to take over the world (or at least building The Broke Socialite empire).
What is your indulgence?
Shamefully, I rarely stumble upon a pair of cheetah-print shoes that shouldn’t be in my closet.
Where is your favorite place to go with your girlfriends?
Can you believe it’s home? Delicious food, a great bottle of wine, and good conversation around the table of fellowship can hardly be beaten.
