Fresh Face: Melanie Stewart

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Melanie Stewart has been an entrepreness for almost ten of her twenty plus year career.  In 2009, Melanie branched into the product industry by co-founding M&M Consumer Products, Inc., a women-owned company devoted to developing products that add both comfort and convenience to people’s everyday lives.  Melanie is constantly looking at ways to make her life more comfortable and better so that she can help others live a more comfortable and better life.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Passionate, funny, loving

What is your biggest goal for the future of your business?
To be a multi-million dollar internationally recognized company for creating comfortable, convenient and creative solutions to everyday health and beauty needs.

What is one thing you could not live without?
My products of course. No, seriously, my family. They are my rock and my support. They believe in me and encourage me. I would not be where I am personally or professionally without them.

What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta?
The phenomenal business women that live in city! There are so many great women entrepreneurs in Atlanta to network with.

What inspired you to start your business?
I wanted to be able to be more involved in my son’s life when I co-founded my first company, Compliance Partners, Inc. in 2001. When I co-founded my second company, M&M Consumer Products, Inc. in 2009, I had been unsuccessfully searching for solutions to health and beauty issues that I was having. Since I could not find any solutions on the market, I decided to create them myself.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
Freedom, flexibility and creativity. Being an entrepreneur allows me the freedom to do what I want, the flexibility to do it when I want and the creativity to do it how I want.

If you could have dinner and talk about business with one person, who would it be?
Mary Kay Ash. I think that she is such an inspiration for women entrepreneurs. I have a long list of questions that I would love to ask her.

If you could give one piece advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?
BELIEVE! Believe in yourself, believe in your product/service and believe in your success. Believe and you can achieve!

What is your indulgence?

Fresh Face: Claire Watkins

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Claire Watkins is the creative entrepreness behind Claire Watkins Interior Design and author of popular interior design blog, High Gloss Blue.  After writing her law school entrance essay on the characteristics of design as an argument, then paying for her business license and law school deposit in the same week, Claire made the decision to pursue her real dream.  Currently, she’s thrilled she gets to talk about chairs every single day, recession or not.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
One.  Hot.  Mess.

What is your biggest goal for the future of your business?
My biggest goal is the same as every small business owner’s goal to hire people to do all the non design related stuff I do for Claire Watkins Interior Design.  More concretely, my biggest goal is to take more design risks and fewer business risks.

When I first started my company, I was nervous about pushing clients in their design choices (would they think I was not listening to them or asserting my personal taste over theirs?).  I was nervous about having clients sign contract (would they think their was something in the fine print?).  I was nervous to push them to pay me on past due invoices (would I seem rude in following up on a late invoice?).  I’ve learned to listen to myself and now it is just a matter of having the discipline to always impart things.

What is one thing you could not live without?
My dogs.

What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta?
The climate, hands down.

What inspired you to start your business?
After earning a degree in commercial interior design, I worked in textile design for major hotels and then as a photo stylist.  I always felt limited working for other people, like I was only using one half of my brain.  Looking for a challenging career, I decided to go to law school.  When I wrote the check for my tuition deposit, something clicked.  I bought my LLC the same week.  Design is my passion and I figured I could get this thing going in the three years it would take me to graduate from law school.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
It is tremendously rewarding.  Every thing from getting to know new clients, to walking into a finished space, to creating relationships with artists, craftspeople and the Atlanta community in general (hello CRAVE and Laura Scholz), all the good stuff that comes with owning your own business really brings a high.

If you could have dinner and talk about business with one person, who would it be?
Let’s be honest, my next big client.

If you could give one piece advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?
You can do it.  Keep a day job, prepare to fail, meet all the people you can and start now, no excuses.  That is one sentence, so does it count as one piece of advice?  Oh and social media, social media, social media.

What business mistake have you made that you will not repeat?
Understanding the necessity of operating on a specific budget from day one. I would also better research my marketing outlets.

What is your indulgence?
I love buying new clothes!

Fresh Face: Erica Gwyn

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Georgia native, Erica Brantley Gwyn, is one busy entrepreness!  In addition to her business, Kaleidoscope Kids Camp, she also has experience directing and managing programs for organizations such as Spelman College, Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
I would describe myself in three words as: 1) energetic 2) passionate 3) educator

What is your biggest goal for the future of your business?
The largest goal that I have for Kaleidoscope Kids Camp is to broaden the scientific experiences of our youth participants to include international travel to compete in robotics and/or other Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives. We are currently working towards that goal by forming a team in May 2011 to participate in the FIRST LEGO Robotics Competition.

What is one thing you could not live without?
One thing I can not live without is a red velvet cupcake from locally owned bakery, Camicakes :)

What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta?
As an Atlanta native, my favorite thing about living here is the good southern cooked meals at the many exquisite restaurants. Atlanta is a “foodies” dream come true.

What inspired you to start your business?
What inspired me to start my business was my love of participating in science fairs as a youth. My oldest son did not have many opportunities to participate in science research fairs during his middle school years due to public school budget restraints, so I conducted a bit of research and before I knew it, my passion & professional experiences merged to provide a resource for  many families in South Fulton who were looking to fill the same educational science and math achievement gaps.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
My favorite part of being an entrepreneur is the ability to set my own office hours in order to serve my family’s needs first and foremost. I enjoy putting in hard work and seeing the creative opportunities that arise from networking with other agencies interested in creating exposure for today’s youth.

If you could have dinner and talk about business with one person, who would it be?
If I could have dinner and talk about business with anyone, it would have to be with Donald Trump. He has and remains as the king of reinvention and I believe I could learn a lot about remaining steadfast and consistent during a turbulent economy. Sean “P. Diddy” Combs would be a close second – he is truly the quintessential self made millionaire.

If you could give one piece advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?
If I could give one piece of advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, it would be to find a mentor in your field of business to meet with, as needed, for career consulting, My mentor, Olu Sanya (Success Prep, LLC) always challenges me to deliver the best resources for my clients and to stay abreast of emerging trends in technology to offer better educational resources for Atlanta’s youth.
