Risk Taking: Should You Dare?

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

We’re ringing in the new year at CRAVE with a question for all you women business owners out there… Do you dare? Is 2011 going to be a year of taking risks with your business, holding back, or a combination of both? To help you strategize, we are dedicating the month of January to the pros and cons of risk-taking across the board. Our business chat and blog entries will be brimming with juicy stories of risks gone right or wrong as well as advice from our CRAVE experts on when to know to take a leap of faith or to simply sit back and let life fall into place.

We knew this would be a hot topic when Melody wanted to know what her Facebook followers ask themselves before taking a risk and got SO many amazing responses. Check them out and prepare yourself for an exciting month of risks and rewards!

What do you ask yourself before you take a risk?
Just curious? before you take a risk? a leap to something new? start a new project? WHAT DO YOU ASK YOURSELF? do you write down the pros and cons? do you just do it and ask why later? how long do you ponder? do you end up jumping? or do nothing? tell me!!! what is your risk taking style?

Suzette Sommer
Oh… wow. What is a “risk?” That is one four-letter word that I have seemingly never known.
Sydney Chavez
I ask myself what I would lose if I didn’t take the leap.
Nicole Francois
before i take a risk i ask myself: why i am interested in taking the risk, what i hope to gain from it, what the result will be and who’s going to be with me? then, i outline my plan and jump!
Maria Ross
Before I take a risk I ask myself if I will regret it more if I don’t take it than if I do. I weigh pros and cons, seek advice from those I trust….and then go with my gut! At a certain point, if it feels right, all the data in the world doesn’t matter.
Sonja Silver
The first thing I ask is “what is the worst thing that can happen”? If I can live with the answer, I go for it. The biggest risk is to not take one!
Elise Kloter
same here, Sonia…puts the scary stuff in perspective
Melody Biringer
lovin all you risk takers….keep it coming! as i get older i seem to take risks slower and more cautious. i want to be naive again!
Lauren Bacon
These days, more and more I check in with my gut. I highly recommend a little book called “Make Light Work” by Kate Sutherland that has helped me enormously with listening to my intuition. (It’s cool and non-flaky, I promise.)
Michelle Michael
what’s the reward…? is it personal or financial? maybe a little of both. go for it, and surround yourself with those that support your dream!
Lyndi Thompson
My first thought: Risks can often be re-labeled as adventures. I tend to dismiss risks that I don’t feel I have good access to supportive people around me. However, most of the time I can find at least two people. I try imagine best and worst case scenario, while always keeping in mind I know I make pretty good decisions and in the end things always end up OK.
Mary Boisselle
I usually don’t ask any questions…I trust my intuition then I take a huge leap and bungie jump off the bridge or I don’t. There is a reason why opportunities come, so I can find the gem inside, whether it’s a pearl or a piece of glass.
Larisa Goldin
I try to check in with my guidance. i believe that risks are just opportunities in disguise, the only question is whether they are part of the intended path or are a test (a distraction). So based on what I get back from my inner guidance (does it feel right?) I take the risk or not.
Rupa Wickrama
Feelings of Anxiety = don’t take it. Feelings of Anticipation or Excitement = this warrants further exploration!
Sydney Chavez
I CRAVE Risk Taking. : )
Traci Barnum
Jump and figure everything else out later. Unless of course, you have a really smart husband who demands that you make a plan before you jump and break into your retirement fund for that risk. It’s a great balance. : )
Carrie McIlveen Middlemiss
It’s typically a gut feeling. I usually think it through and if it still feels right I go for it. Especially if it is something I’ll enjoy and it makes money.
Jennifer Saphier Whitman
I have to step away from the decision for a few days. It always pops back into my head while I am doing other things during the day. If every time the idea pops up I get a sick feeling, I know it isn’t the right choice. If I get excited every time I think about it, it is a definite go!

We hope these comments get you thinking about your own risk-tasking strategies for the year and that you’ll stay tuned to our blog over the next month and share your own daring deeds in the comments! And of course, have a Happy New Year from CRAVE!

Fresh Face: Erica Gwyn

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Georgia native, Erica Brantley Gwyn, is one busy entrepreness!  In addition to her business, Kaleidoscope Kids Camp, she also has experience directing and managing programs for organizations such as Spelman College, Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
I would describe myself in three words as: 1) energetic 2) passionate 3) educator

What is your biggest goal for the future of your business?
The largest goal that I have for Kaleidoscope Kids Camp is to broaden the scientific experiences of our youth participants to include international travel to compete in robotics and/or other Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives. We are currently working towards that goal by forming a team in May 2011 to participate in the FIRST LEGO Robotics Competition.

What is one thing you could not live without?
One thing I can not live without is a red velvet cupcake from locally owned bakery, Camicakes :)

What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta?
As an Atlanta native, my favorite thing about living here is the good southern cooked meals at the many exquisite restaurants. Atlanta is a “foodies” dream come true.

What inspired you to start your business?
What inspired me to start my business was my love of participating in science fairs as a youth. My oldest son did not have many opportunities to participate in science research fairs during his middle school years due to public school budget restraints, so I conducted a bit of research and before I knew it, my passion & professional experiences merged to provide a resource for  many families in South Fulton who were looking to fill the same educational science and math achievement gaps.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
My favorite part of being an entrepreneur is the ability to set my own office hours in order to serve my family’s needs first and foremost. I enjoy putting in hard work and seeing the creative opportunities that arise from networking with other agencies interested in creating exposure for today’s youth.

If you could have dinner and talk about business with one person, who would it be?
If I could have dinner and talk about business with anyone, it would have to be with Donald Trump. He has and remains as the king of reinvention and I believe I could learn a lot about remaining steadfast and consistent during a turbulent economy. Sean “P. Diddy” Combs would be a close second – he is truly the quintessential self made millionaire.

If you could give one piece advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?
If I could give one piece of advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, it would be to find a mentor in your field of business to meet with, as needed, for career consulting, My mentor, Olu Sanya (Success Prep, LLC) always challenges me to deliver the best resources for my clients and to stay abreast of emerging trends in technology to offer better educational resources for Atlanta’s youth.

Melanie Carter is editor and founder of the Lucky + Lovely blog.  A native Atlantan,  Melanie has worked in many fields of design including wedding and event stationery for the bridal industry, advertising, product design and beauty/personal care product packaging design.  She is currently a stylist with Stella & Dot, a boutique jewelry company and lives in Atlanta with her three loves: boyfriend David, daughter Zoe and dog Lucky.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
sweet, humble, charismatic

What is your biggest goal for the future of your business?
The biggest goal for the future of my business is to spread style and inspiration to women everywhere.

What is one thing you could not live without?
Love

What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta?
I love the vibrancy of the city and the entrepreneurial spirit of the people here.

What inspired you to start your business?
Honestly, I couldn’t find a job. I thought “why not create my own job?” I started blogging as a way to catalog inspirational things I found online. I started as a stylist with Stella & Dot because I fell head over heels in love with Jessica Herrin (our CEO and founder) and wanted a way to be stylish everyday.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
I love working in my PJs, I love making my own schedule, I love the power of choice to do what I want to do. I love not having to punch a clock. I love my short commute from my bedroom to my office.

If you could have dinner and talk about business with one person, who would it be?
I have always love and admired the spirit of Anita Roddick, Founder of the Body Shop. I used to get the catalogs when I was in High School and I loved reading them over and over. She really left a huge impact on me.

If you could give one piece advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?
My one piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is be different and never, ever give up. Never rest on your laurels, get up each day and roll up your sleeves and get ready to work hard.

Fresh Face: Casey McCann

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Casey McCann is the creative mastermind behind Eclectic Music, an intown music school for children and adults.  What started as a small studio in her home is now a fully staffed school with four Atlanta locations!

What Casey enjoys most about teaching is giving students the skills to succeed on their own–music should and can be enjoyed by students of all ages, regardless of level.  For more information about Casey, visit caseymccann.com.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Creative, idealistic, intense.

What is your biggest goal for the future of your business?
I want our programs to be effective on a level that is truly remarkable.  Through our early childhood programs, I want to see children develop the kind of musical intuition that people consider to be inborn talent, and then cultivate it through further study.  This will happen in a atmosphere where people young and old come to have fun and be musical without self-consciousness – like growing up in a musical family.  I want to demonstrate that playing music is possible for everyone, regardless of age and experience.

What is one thing you could not live without?
Kids!  I have to take a break every now and then just like the next person, but I love being around kids.  I have a niece and nephew that I adore, and I recently became stepmother to an imaginative, inventive middle-school girl.  Someday I hope to have kids of my own.  Children are the lifeblood of my business – parents will indulge in a certain idealism for their children in a way that they aren’t willing to do for themselves.

What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta?
I love that Atlanta’s not a well-established city in a lot of ways – there is still room to make your mark.  People are hungry for ideas that are new and fresh.  It doesn’t take a lot of money or connections to be a leader in this town.

What inspired you to start your business?
I started from scratch in Atlanta after having quit my job teaching music in a public school in Maine.  Based on the skills and training I had, I decided to teach music lessons.  After a few years, I was getting more referrals than I could handle, so I decided to bring some other teachers on.  And here we are!  But when I think about it, I think the inspiration may have been real estate.  I can’t walk by an empty commercial space without thinking about the possible businesses that could go there.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
Being an entrepreneur makes life sort of a game: How can I make a living doing the things I’m best at, that I most enjoy?  It’s often scary and exhausting, but it’s also full of the rewards that come from being the hero of your own story.

If you could have dinner and talk about business with one person, who would it be?
I am a huge Dave Ramsey fan – he’s known for giving financial advice, but he’s also an entrepreneur who loves to coach other entrepreneurs.  He’s built his empire with only cash – no credit – and a positive, gossip-free culture among his employees.  It would be fun to chat about the big picture with Seth Godin, but Dave Ramsey is all practical, down-to-earth advice and that’s where stuff really gets done.

If you could give one piece advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?
Resist the temptation to compare yourself with others – just start small and focus on your own thing.  Your competitors aren’t really your competitors – you’re the only one who can do what you do.

Introducing Finders Keepers Consignment

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Finders Keepers Consignment is home to three of the best consignment stores in Atlanta, Georgia.  With over twenty-six years in business, their award-winning stores have the pleasure of working with thousands of consignors and customers nationwide.

Throughout the month of January, Finders Keepers will be offering FREE workshops to help you get organized in 2011!  Geared to help you get started, they are bringing you four savvy organizational pros who will teach you how to make the process easier.  Click here for more information.

What are your most popular products or services?
Well I have 3 stores, one does men’s and women’s clothing, shoes and accessories, one does designer women’s and one does furniture and home furnishings so the answer is tricky.
Probably our most popular category is shoes and purses!  We recently did a 40% off all shoes at the Avondale store.  We have done sales before but this one was CRAZY!  I ended up in the back room where we keep the left shoes for 4 hours pulling shoe mates for the girls.  I had just stopped in to make sure everything was all set for the sale (it was my day off), we opened to a line of shoe-crazed women (I know them because I am one) and the madness did not stop for hours.  I literally pulled shoe mates for 4 hours before it calmed down!  We sold about 225 pairs of shoes in 2 days!  And handbags are always popular!  We rarely have to mark them down.  Sometimes I think having a store just for consigned shoes and handbags would be fun!

People may be surprised to know…
I am an Atlanta Native, you know we are rare these days.  I have sold other people’s stuff since I was about 10.  A friend and I used to set up our little shop of treasures on a street corner near our homes on a regular basis and sell stuff to Emory Students returning from class.  I love keeping merchandise out in the universe and am a big believer in feng shui.  I think hording stuff in closets and basements is bad feng shui and once you don’t love something anymore, it is your responsibility to return it to the universe so that someone else can have it and love it!

What or who inspired you to start your business?
My Dad, Casey Jones.  He was an entrepreneur who started a business in his garage at night, after working all day at his regular job and caring for his family.  He did all this after coming home from World War II.  I have a great deal of love and respect for this man.  He has always been my cheerleader, believing that I could do anything….and he loaned me the money for my first store!  He said consignment as a business is genius!  You don’t have any money tied up in inventory so if it doesn’t sell, it doesn’t matter.  The risks for a new venture are minimal so he was all for it…and it brought me and my family back from North Carolina.

What business mistake have you made that you will not repeat?
I now own 2 of my buildings and rent one.  Many times when I was renting, I passed up commercial buildings that were for sale because I thought they were overpriced and I was afraid of the mortgage payments.  I look back and the buildings are worth WAY more than the prices that I passed up.  I finally bought 2 buildings and it was the smartest thing I did.  Don’t pass up opportunities to buy commercial real estate, especially if it is to run your own business out of them! Why pay rent when you can pay a mortgage?  There is one particular building in Avondale that was $180,000 in the early 90′s.  Now it is worth probably 2 million, even in this economy.  That is one I will never forget, I could have owned that!

Fresh Face: Allie Carswell

Friday, January 7th, 2011

This week’s Fresh Face is entrepreness Allie Carswell of Honey Bee Invites.  Allie’s blog, The Secret Life of Invites, celebrates the beauty and art of invitations and fine stationary: where the come from, why they’re made, what people are celebrating or announcing and why they look the way they do.  Every thought, paper, ink, sketch, letter, and color has a purpose.  Every invitation  is made with love.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Genuine, creative, dreamer

What is your biggest goal for the future of your business?
To make invitations for a celebrity!!

In all seriousness my goal is to always build a relationship with the client. It is one of the best parts of my job. Of course, I love painting, calligraphy, and hand-crafting invitations, but I also really enjoy getting to meet the clients and reflect their personality in my work.

What is one thing you could not live without?
Paper & pen.  Seriously! I am constantly thinking of random ideas for cards, invitations, etc. You never know when you’ll get inspired; sometimes it’s in mall or in the line at the DMV (this actually happened to me).

What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta?
The food! Atlanta has the best restaurants.  The Social House is one of my favorite feel-good spots.

What inspired you to start your business?
Years ago, I found my passion in painting and letters. And while reading an amazing book by Dan Miller I came across an excerpt from Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet.

“Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy. For if you break bread with indifference, you bake bitter bread that feeds but half a man’s hunger. And if you grudge the crushing of grapes, your grudge distils a poison in the wine. And if you sing though as angels, and love not the singing, you muffle man’s ears to the voices of the day and the voices of the night.”

Gibran’s words spoke right to me. And I decided, if you aren’t doing what you love, then read, learn, invest and absorb everything about what you love, and make your passion your business.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
That I am living my dream.  It’s an amazing feeling to go after something you believe in, and watching Honey Bee Invites slowly grow has been incredible and very rewarding.

If you could have dinner and talk about business with one person, who would it be?
Ree Drummond of @thepioneerwoman. She is amazingly talented at many things and I think much of her successes cab be attributed to her business savvyness and go-getter attitude. I would love to ask her a million and one questions!

If you could give one piece advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?
Get involved with social media!  Social media can help grow your business immensely.  Coming from a background in PR, I strongly value media relations and with the new age of Twitter, Facebook, and blogging you can easily access and influence your target market.

Stay connected Allie and her business here:
