Interview with Amanda Brown & Lizzie Joyce of Spruce

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Amanda Brown & Lizzie Joyce own a company called Spruce. Spruce was created to bring an updated approach to upholstery.  Spruce works with you to create a custom look for your personal style and space.  In between client projects they find furniture and fabrics that bring out the best in people and have these pieces for sale.  They sell fabrics and teach monthly weekend upholstery workshops.

How would you describe your business in 3 adjectives or less?
stylish, individualized, renewed.

What are your most popular products or services?
Custom upholstery services with design consultations.

People may be surprised to know…
We started our business in an un-air-conditioned warehouse where we froze in the winter and baked in the summer.

What was the inspiration or motivation behind starting your business?
We originally wanted to do a furniture retail store, selling furniture we found and re-designed.  We had a hard time finding an upholsterer to work with, so we took the professional classes offered at ACC and decided to do it ourselves.  By the time we finished the classes, we already had business!  We saw the need for a stylish, custom upholstery service and decided to run with it.

Who is your role model or mentor?
We draw a lot of inspiration from the creative energy in Austin. Being around so many others who share a need for unique goods and services, encourages us to go beyond the traditional role of our business.

What mistake have you made in your business that you will not repeat?
We let our communications with eachother slip and started assuming things. We do our best now to keep our communication lines open so we always know what’s going on with the business and eachother.

How do you spend your free time?
We spend our free time relaxing!  Lizzie likes to go to the Austin dog parks with her 3 dogs.  Amanda enjoys weekly game night and catching up on design blogs and magazines.

What is your indulgence?
Beer-thirty!  Well, we do love a good beer, but we might have to say sleeping in on Sunday and Hey Cupcake.

Where is your favorite place to go with your girlfriends?
Vivo!  You can’t go wrong with good Mexican food, a strong margarita and a lush rose to go.

Where is the best place to get a pedicure?
Nails of America!  It’s just so easy.

Where is the best place to get a manicure?
We’d love to hear what others have to say!  Our manicures last about 6 hours, so we pretty much skip them.

Where is the best place to find gifts?
Mercury Design Studio because they have great, unique items that people want to hang on to.

What is your favorite salon?
Birds Barber Shop because you can go after work without an appointment!

Where is the best place to buy shoes?
Now that Fetish is gone, the Nordstom shoe department.  You can always find something good there for any outfit you might have.

Where is the best place to buy clothes?
Some of the most stylish ensembles reside at Bows & Arrows. You also can’t go wrong with Anthropologie.

Who is the best local designer or artist?
Julie Speed’s work startles and intrigues the viewer with its unorthodox subject matter and requires contemplation to understand the meaning of her work.

What is the best gym or fitness club?
Pure Austin because of their great cycling classes, their top-notch trainers and the great environment.

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Kerry Rupp is the owner of Holiday Golightly; your ultimate Girlfriend Getaway resource. They take the research and planning out of your busy hands and book fantastically unique getaway trips that match your group’s interests and style. In addition, their site is loaded with free advice, insider info, gossip and sleek trip tools – including the popular Divvy It Up tool that splits expenses after a trip. Here’s is what Kerry had to say about her fabulous business.

How would you describe your business in 3 adjectives or less?
Guaranteed Great Getaway

What are your most popular products or services?
The ladies love our trips to Tuscany & Umbria in the Italian countryside: lounging at the villa, joining a truffle hunt, taking cooking classes and indulging in an delicious dinner with wine pairings, prepared and explained by a local celebrity chef.

People may be surprised to know…
Girlfriend getaways represent four percent (4%) of all US travel spending. Only twenty-four percent of US women have taken a girlfriend getaway in the past three year but thirty-nine percent PLAN to in the next three years.

What was the inspiration or motivation behind starting your business?
A friend told me she and her sisters had the time, money and the inclination to take a girls’ trip together, but they just never got organized and did it – whereas she thought I could “write a book on the topic”. I realized I really could create a business doing what I was already doing for fun, and help women take much-needed trips that so many women neglect to do for themselves.

What mistake have you made in your business that you will not repeat?
Assuming that people will do what they say they’ll do. Actions speak louder than words.

How do you spend your free time?
Traveling, of course!

What is your indulgence?
A monthly massage with Moe at Milk + Honey Spa. (And who am I kidding? I’m constantly indulging myself with travel…)

Where is your favorite place to go with your girlfriends?
Martha’s Vineyard in the summertime, Vail in the wintertime!

Where is the best place to get a manicure and pedicure?
Polished – chic atmosphere, convenient to home!

Where is the best place to find gifts?
Sanctuary on Bee Cave – Hanna has fantastic taste and a beautiful assortment.

What is your favorite salon?
Still figuring that out – miss my stylist in Seattle ….

Where is the best place to buy shoes?
DSW … because with my darn 10-1/2 size foot, it’s not about which shoes I want, it’s about which brand even MAKES my size!

Where is the best place to buy clothes?
Boutiques, baby! I love the dresses at Maya Star in SoCo.

Who is the best local designer or artist?
Still learning …

What is the best gym or fitness club?
Town Lake Trail – great people watching and the leash free area where I can let the dog loose so she can run as fast as she can (which is way faster then me!)

Ladies to Watch: Hometown Olympians

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Here at CRAVE we like to tell you about strong smart women doing remarkable things and athletes are no exception. Now that February is finally here, we thought we’d fill you in on some of the local women to lookout for who have earned their way to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, beginning Friday, February 12.

Amanda Evora – Figure Skating – Sugar Land, Texas

Even though Amanda Evora now lives in Florida, she grew up in Texas and she has the fight to prove it. Evora discovered her sister’s ice skates as a child and since they fit, decided to give them a try. When she was 18, she left her family’s home in Texas to further her skating career. Now, she is studying business administration at the University of South Florida. Her skating partner is Mark Ladwig. Before 2010, the pair had been consistent but had always finished out of the top three: Evora and Ladwig finished fourth at the 2007 Nationals, fifth at the 2008 Nationals and fourth at the 2009 Nationals. After finishing out of the top three for three years in a row, Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig broke through when it counted most, earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. We’re cheering for Amanda and her partner and hope she makes it all the way! Info

Katie Uhlaender – Skeleton – McGregor, Texas

Katie Uhlaender began the sport of skeleton in 2003, quickly climbing national rank by winning both the National and Junior National Championships in her first season. Uhlaender made the Winter Olympic Team in 2006 and slid to a sixth place finish in Torino, Italy. Uhlaender loves to ski, snowboard, kite board and craves speed, which is one of the reasons she began skeleton. She “loves the feeling of getting power off the start block.” Though she now lives in Breckenridge, Colorado, she spent eight years of her life in McGregor, where she was the only girl on her school’s baseball team. Go Katie! Info

Helen Upperton – Bobsleigh – University of Texas

After being raised in Calgary, Helen Upperton attended the University of Texas, seeking a bachelor of science in Kinesiology. Although Upperton is on the Canadian National team, she clearly has a soft spot for the longhorn state.  In addition to 5 World Cup podium finishes, Helen stunned the world becoming the first Canadian woman ever to win a gold medal in bobsleigh on the storied St. Moritz track finishing the year ranked second in the FIBT rankings. Upperton’s objective is to hone her skills for Vancouver 2010 with a view to becoming the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic medal in bobsleigh. Helen enjoys being involved in the community. She makes time to give something back by helping to inspire kids through public speaking and the Calgary based Youth Education Through Sport program. Info

Now you know who to root for in Vancouver, go Texans!

Austin’s Best of Resort Wear

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

If the glum January weather is dragging you down a little too much, maybe it’s time to get away and bring a little more summer into your life. Did you know that winter is actually the best time of year to go on a cruise because you are more likely to get incredible deals and save loads of money while still escaping to somewhere with plenty of warm weather and sunshine? Now’s the time. If you need some summer clothes and accessories to go with that lovely cruise, check out these stores.

Adelante – 1206 West 38th St – adelanteaustin.com – 512.452.5322

The store’s look is inspired by the owner’s love of anything vintage. She loves to scour the country from coast to coast, handpicking the many varied, colorful styles that hang on their racks. She draws not only from different regional influences, but finds inspiration from across the decades. They carry hundreds of fashions, often vintage-inspired but always with a distinctly modern twist.

Although they offer a lot of wonderful art, furniture and home décor, the things that caught my eye were the bright and colorful hobo bags and summer clogs. Theses items look perfect for a cruise getaway, and you’re sure to enjoy what the rest of the store has to offer as well.

Girl Next Door - 250 West 2nd St – Girlnd.com – 512.322.0501

The same store we featured last week for evening wear is also a great place to find cute summer tops and sundresses. They have the clothes you crave from the hottest designers on the market. They seek out the best of New York and Los Angeles’ fashion scenes and bring it to you. Their store also carries some locally-designed products like the casual and active wear by Erebelle.

If you scroll through their vast list of designers you’ll see a few that stand out for cruise wear. Ella Moss and Geren Ford both have a lot of cute tops that are light and bright and Mara Hoffman has some adorable beach dresses, a sleeveless jumper and even a kimono dress. These three designers are just the tip of the iceberg. Come check out all that Girl Next Door has to offer.

Maya Star – 1508 South Congress – mayastar.com – 512.912.1475

Maya Star showcases a diverse collection of clothing options with a focus on dresses for every occasion. The owner, Maya Krauss’ taste relates to a number of different styles from classic to trendy and the clothing represents this with options for every age, shape, and budget. Today, Maya Star has gained a reputation as one of the top boutiques in Austin and the go-to destination for distinctive clothing, gifts, and jewelry.

There are plenty of perfect dresses at Maya Star to wear either on a casual morning on deck or a glammed up night on the town when the ship is docked on a tropical island. Combining chic style with casual comfort seems to be what Maya Star does best as far as dresses are concerned.

Now you know where to go to prepare yourself, book that ticket already!

Touch of Sass is a fabulous spot to find unique accessories that are sure to turn heads. Creator Currie Bucher has this to say about it: “Accessories are truly my passion. And I believe every lady should follow her passion because where passion is, success will be also. So in October 2004, Touch of Sass was born. A lot of people ask me where I got the name. Although there were several inspirations, I just feel that the name is what this company is all about. . . adding a ‘Touch of Sass’ to your already fabulous look. It’s about helping you find accessories that highlight your own unique style, beauty and individuality. I believe every woman has her own ‘sass appeal’ and we have something for everyone. After all, we are equal parts chic, grace, cool, glam, whimsy, fun, sophistication, and elegance. And above all, we are sassy.”

I hope this helps you find your long lost personality statement. After all, you don’t need an occasion to be the best (and certainly most shiny) version of yourself.
