Interview with Lara Miller

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Lara Miller is a woman of true beauty and talent, which resonates within herself and within the clothes she designs. Her designs are influenced mostly by architectural and cultural landscape. The playful geometry of the garments created connects the the personalities of the women who wear them. We caught up with this busy woman to ask her a few questions we were CRAVEing to know the answers to.

What is it about Lara Miller Designs that you love the most?
I love so many things about my company! I love that everything I make is made in my hometown, Chicago. I love that I support my local ecomomy by paying fair wages. I love the amazing community that I have been so lucky to create through my business. I love that everything I create and the way that I run my business acknowledges the responsibility I feel we all have to protecting and respecting our enviroment. I love getting to meet my customers and playing dress up with them. I love that people know that “eco” doesn’t have to be unflattering, that organic cotton is luxurious, and that hemp in fact is not itchy. I especially love that almost all of my pieces are designed to “wear it your wayTM” meaning they can be flipped, wrapped, and reversed to have multiple garments at once.

What is the most important thing about yourself that you’ve learned through running your business?
Wow, there’s a lot that I can say to answer this question as well. I have learned so much about myself since beginning my company 5 years ago. I think the most important thing that I have learned is that I am easily excited which leads to easily exciting others, and that is a ton of fun! Daniel Burnham’s quote sums up everything I have learned about myself to a t.”Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans. Aim high in hope and work. Remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die”

When did you first know you wanted to be a designer?
According to my father, the first time he let choose what I wanted to wear, which I guess was around 1? My first memory was in high school, taking a fashion and interior design elective. Before that, despite working for an infamous denim store in Chicago, I wanted to be in neuro research. The brain still fascinates me.

What is currently your most popular design?
Hand-loomed Sweaters – Any of the flips, especially the Elizabeth Flip. Wovens – The Donna Dress.

What is the best piece of advice you could give about starting a business?
Stay true to yourself and your vision, but make sure that aligns with your target market. Know your market inside and out. Know them like you know yourself. And be ready to eat, sleep, live your business – and have fun doing it! If it’s not fun then it isn’t worth it. If it’s not fun for you, it won’t be fun for your customers. Be ready to be flexible and make the changes that you need to make to keep it fun!

Hello, Summer!

Monday, June 21st, 2010

How many times a year do we utter the words, “If only there were more hours in the day…”? Well, on the summer solstice, you will get your wish since today, the sun shines longer than any other day of the year. Today of course also marks the official start of summer, and with it, we celebrate all the best things about this much-anticipated season! To welcome the return of flip-flops, barbecue’s, vacations and more, we’ve compiled a list of activities to do in order to take advantage of those extra minutes of sunlight. Grab your friends and family and head out – you won’t want to miss a second of your summer solstice celebration!

A picnic is a simple no-brainer for a summer occasion, but you might decide to get a little creative for the special occasion by coordinating a late-night sunset picnic in your city’s most scenic setting. Bring a playlist of songs with the word “sun” in them to set the right mood.

If you’re an avid outdoors-woman, you’ll want to really maximize your extra minutes of rays! Head out for an evening hike, run, or bike ride and extend it a little longer than usual. You’ll get an extra boost knowing that this is the only night you’ll be able to savor the sunlight during your routine workout.

Spending your solstice doing water activities is an excellent idea if you live near a body of water. Boating, surfing, kayaking, or even just lounging beachside will give you that summer glow you’ve been missing all winter. Plus, watching the sun lower over sparkling waves is a sight that can hardly be beat, and one you’ll want to store in your memory for the next winter.

Say Mother Nature decides to throw you a curveball and sends rain instead of shine, well don’t let that stop you from enjoying the spirit of the day. Curling up with a book and hot tea can be relaxing during a summer rainfall or storm especially if enjoyed from a patio or porch. If the day is more gray gloom than thrilling boom, head to your local arboretum or greenhouse to get your tropical nature fix.

An Interview with Ting Designs

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Angela Lim has created a solution to the issue of toting a purse everywhere we women go. Whether large or small, we set our bags in sometimes the most unsightly of places. Ting Designs has developed purse hangers that solve the problem of this germy issue. Not only is it cleaner and safer to use, Ting Designs offers a unique and chic arrangement of purse hangers to fit anyone’s style preference. They are great gifts and can be found in restaurants, hair salons, and trendy boutiques. Also on their website. We caught up with Angela Lim to ask her a few questions Ting Designs and why she’s so passionate about them!

What about Ting Designs do you love the most?
Endless possibilities.  Starting a business especially in this economy invites a roller coaster of emotions but at the end of the day, I am grateful to know that I am building my own brand with endless possibilities.

What is the best piece of advice you could give about starting a business?
Just do it!  Over the years, I have heard numerous friends and colleagues longing to start their own businesses but there were always reasons not to take the big leap.  The truth is…it really is not a big leap at all!  The hardest part is to start and then the entrepreneur engines will suddenly kick in on its own.  So I encourage everybody to take the first step, no matter how big or small it may be, and see where it goes.

How did you come up with Purse Hangers as your first business?
A few years back, I was having Sunday brunch with my girlfriends at one of those nuveau brunch spots with no room to sit let alone put down our handbags. Then, one of them whipped out a tratitional “L” shaped purse hook.It was love at first sight! Being a huge handbag fan, I knew this was must-have accessory and I would love to be designing them one day.

Why do you think not more women use purse hangers?
With more publications about germs on handbags, I think women are becoming more conscious on where they put their purses. However, I do understand that it is one more thing to remember to bring. So our goal is to create purse hangers that double as attachable accessories for your handbag so that it is visible and stays on whenever you go.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned about yourself through your business experience?
Karma.  I believe that the law of cause and effect surrounds us in every second of our physical and mental state.  It could be as simple as thinking about a good thought or showing a small gesture of kindness to a stranger.  Yet somehow these actions and thoughts will transpire into reality like that stranger who became a customer.  So I try my best to do the right thing and treat people with respect.  In the end, I do not worry about my future.

Daddy’s Day is Almost Here!

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Father’s Day is around the corner and every year its the same. We ponder WHAT to get our dear dads for a gift. We all know that whatever we hand them they’ll be thankful for; but we always want to push the envelope! When we are pressed for time and don’t have the effort left to make something extremely sentimental, here is some advice from your friends at CRAVE on what to do that will make him smile.

Try and remember what your dad is passionate about. Is he an outdoors-man? Cook? Tech-savvy? Music lover? With some passion he has in mind its always easier to direct your gift towards a certain theme and come out successful. It will help you avoid spending hours shopping with no clue of what to get as well as guaranteeing that he will appreciate the gift and the thought you put into it.
If still stuck on where to begin with finding a gift, maybe go in a different direction then a simple gift from the store. Does you’re dad love a certain comedian or band? Grab tickets to a concert.

Dad’s love knowing you want to spend time with them, so if time allows, do an activity that involves doing something together. Time spent is more precious than any other gift money could buy!

Remember first and foremost that its your dad’s day! All that matters truly matters is that you make sure to tell him he’s special and you love him.
