Shop ’til you drop

Here at CRAVE, we’re passionate about local businesses – and we support the women that own them. More importantly, though, we want you to love them as much as we do.

Black Friday is quickly approaching, and with it comes the onslaught of advertisements from department stores and online retailers. While we love a good sale as much as the next girl, we urge you to stop into Fort Worth’s local shops to see what these fashion-forward ladies have to offer.

For those of you that have yet to jump on the holiday shopping bandwagon, here are a few ideas to get you started:

If you’re looking for stocking stuffers, look no further than The Soap Addict. Karla Suarez makes an array of all-natural body products that will do wonders for your skin during the harsh winter months (and the rest of the year, too!).

If you’re looking for a truly unique gift, stop into Uncommon Angles in Montgomery Plaza or Artful Hand on Camp Bowie. These ladies have an amazing assortment of gifts to fit any budget – and any home!

If you’re looking for something fabulous and sparkly, contact Lisa McConnell or stop by her new studio on Camp Bowie.

We’re Not In Kansas Anymore

Abby Slayton never dreamed of owning a furniture store – she stumbled across it by chance. After buying a home and realizing she couldn’t afford the furniture she wanted, she took matters into her own hands. Researching the pieces and manufacturers revealed a disturbing reality – the mark-up for the pieces she had her eye on was close to 300% more than that of the wholesale prices.

Read on as CRAVE found out how this fearless woman furnished her home – and opened a successful store – with style.

What is the meaning behind the name of your store?
From age 2, my granddaughter, Paisley, was a bit obsessed with the Wizard of Oz. She memorized not only every line, but every expression of every character. It was the absolute cutest thing you have ever seen! She is responsible for the name of my store - There’s No Place Like Home.

What challenges did you face opening a furniture store?
I had now spent all my savings on my home and furniture, but had no way to advertise my business. This was the greatest challenge I faced; letting people know that there was a better way to get the furniture they had always dreamed of – at prices they could now afford.

What do you love most about working in Fort Worth?
Fort Worth is – and always has been – my home. It’s a place with such character, and friendly, down-to-earth people. After a stint in Dallas, I realized that Fort Worth was the only place I could live. I am Fort Worth, from head to toe.

What changes have you seen in yourself since becoming a business owner?
I have become so dedicated to finding the best quality and style for my customers. I  go to sleep at night dreaming of armoires, sideboards and comfy mattresses.
