Top 5 Metabolism Boosting Foods

Monday, January 10th, 2011

We all know exercise plays a large role in how efficiently our bodies burn calories.  But did you know that food impacts your metabolism as well?  In fact, there are a number of delicious foods that not only bump up your metabolism to influence weight loss but also help create sustained energy throughout the day.  Who could say no to that?  The only caveat is that these metabolism boosting foods are not found in a box, package or plastic wrap.  That’s right…they are real, whole foods that need a little tender love and care (i.e. cooking) before you put them in your mouth. Here are the most fantastic fat burning foods and a few inspirational tips to make them unbelievably tasty.

Dark Leafy Greens- Kale, Collard Greens, Bok Choy, Broccoli, and Swiss Chard are all amazing metabolism-boosting foods that many of us forget to eat.  Ideally we should eat these vitamin-loaded greens twice a day.  That’s right…twice!  Sauté kale with garlic and olive oil for a delicious side dish.  Quickly steam broccoli and toss with sesame oil, lemon and tamari for a taste of heaven or cookcollard greens with chopped sweet potatoes and coconut milk.  Yum!

Daikon- A long white radish, daikon is best pickled, grated into salads or throw into a rich beef stew to soak up all the amazing juices.  For a quick pickle, chop daikon and sprinkle it with salt.  Let it sit for 30 minutes then drain the excess water.  Toss with pepper and sesame oil and you are good to go!

Radish- Their innately spicy crunch makes radishes the ideal food to take your metabolism to the next level.  Eat them with hummus or eggplant spread for an easy snack or throw them in a salad with avocado, orange and mint.  A perfect combination!

Shiitake Mushrooms- Shittake mushrooms not only aid metabolism but also bolster the immune system and clear the body of excess mucus.  Simply chop the mushrooms and sauté with onions, carrots, broccoli and olive oil for a satisfying stir-fry.  Add them to soups for an added bit of texture, or slice and bake with red onions and garbanzo beans for a delicious protein-rich dish.

Onions, Garlic, Scallions and Leeks- If you don’t already cook with these, I don’t know what to say!  Honestly though, onions, garlic and their cousins scallions and leeks are some of the healthiest, inflammation-reducing, calorie-burning foods on the planet.  How to use them? Put them in everything!  Try a red onion frittata and throw freshly chopped scallions into your salads or on top of your sautéed kale.  Leeks add a hearty sweetness to soup or are perfect caramelized and thrown on top of baked potatoes.  And as for garlic, well…think of garlic as onion’s twin.  The two shall never part.  If you are worried about becoming “fragrant” after eating these lovely alliums, don’t worry.  Just make sure everyone else around you eats them too.  Enjoy!

Something Sweet

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Kelly Close and her husband Dan aren’t native Texans, but the burgeoning 7th Street area has welcomed their family – and their sweet confections – with open arms.

Kelly and Dan own Sweet Sammies, Fort Worth’s go-to shop for ice cream sandwiches. Opened in February of 2010, Sweet Sammies provides a one-of-a-kind experience for the young…and the young at heart. From the moment you walk in the door, you know you’re in for a treat. The smell of freshly baked cookies fills the air and the purple walls and TCU decor let you know you’re in Horned Frog country.

Using Grandma and Grandpa’s recipes, their delicious cookies provide the structure for these Sweet Sammies… although you may find that choosing just one kind of cookie is impossible. Should you fall victim to indecision, fear not – It’s perfectly acceptable to build your Sammie with two different cookies (Hey, I couldn’t choose just one, either!). You then slide to your right and choose your favorite flavor of Blue Bell ice cream. A member of the Close family will then build your Sammie.

Sweet Sammies have quickly become one of Fort Worth’s “must have” treats. Whether you’re on a date or spending the day with the kids, this sweet spot is the perfect place to pick up a treat!

The shop is located at 825 Currie, next door to Pure Bliss and Movie Tavern. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (every day).

All the Buzz

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

August 26th marked our first Buzz Party for the Fort Worth CRAVE book! Held at Times Ten Cellars, the party was a huge success – even though there was a torrential downpour and lightning struck the building across the street. All in all, I think that added a little something extra to the party…or maybe that was just Lesleigh’s Sweet Tea Vodka!

Kathy Hanson (our CRAVE regional leader) and Jennifer Sprinkle (the Dallas city leader) were on hand to help answer questions. Many thanks to those ladies for helping us get the Fort Worth city guide off the ground!

It was a great night of networking, wine tasting and productivity. By the end of the party, we had eight fabulous Fort Worth entrepreneurs join the CRAVE book – and we’re thrilled to know each and every one of them!

I feel like I can’t finish this post without mentioning those delicious cupcakes. Donna Nino, your Opulent Cakes were to die for! They completed our tablescapes and were the perfect addition to our drinks.

Cupcakes With an Artisan Twist

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Cupcake Bordello isn’t your ordinary cupcake shop. In fact, owner and baker Patti Kirkey has worked to make her cupcakes as unique as possible by putting an artisan touch on everything that leaves the door. From baking to decorating, Kirkey makes everything by hand and knows each and every product that goes into her cupcakes. Using local products and excluding artificial flavors, she keeps her customers coming back for more.

Read on as CRAVE finds out how this beautiful baking diva got her start.

What sets your cupcake shop apart from others of its kind?
I guess the fact that there really are no others of its kind. I make everything by hand, including my fillings – there are no shortcuts. This is labor-intensive, but the end result is a superior product in both taste and nutrition.

What have you discovered about yourself through opening your own business?
I believe I have a more positive outlook. I know it’s kind of funny, considering the economy, but I have been in the mortgage industry for 14 years – I know what ‘bleak’ can look like. I really enjoy seeing my ideas come to life and being able to share my creations with others. There is so much more satisfaction in that than working for a major corporation, putting in long hours and seeing little reward.

When did you know you wanted to open a cupcake shop?
I’ve known I wanted to have a food-related business for as long as I can remember. I decided on a cupcake shop about four years ago. I had heard of them, but didn’t know how widespread and popular they were until I start doing internet searches. Then I had to think about how I would differentiate y products and that’s when the hard work and product development began.

Why did you choose to operate in Fort Worth as opposed to Dallas?
My husband and I fell in love with Fort Worth from the moment we arrived. The downtown area is always busy, regardless of the day and everyone is so laid-back and friendly. There’s so much diversity in such a small footprint. The residents and city government really seem to embrace its history and sets itself apart from other cities in the country rather than trying to conform to them.

What do you love most about baking?
The science and art behind it. In this day and age, commercials depict “baking” as opening a pack of cookie dough and breaking bits off onto a cookie sheet. Few people realize what baking is all about. You really have to know your ingredients and how they react to one another when mixed. There is no greater satisfaction than having succeeded in making something absolutely perfect, and learning how to duplicate that perfection time and time again.

How long does it take you to create new recipes?
It can take a few days, a few weeks, or even months. I usually am inspired by something new I see; a type of produce, a type of grain or spice, and I experiment until the flavor is right. From there, I move on to the texture until I have that right. It took me almost a year to get my dark chocolate cake exactly right, and now it’s my most requested flavor!

Suffering from Skin Damage this Summer? Fight it with these Foods!

Monday, August 16th, 2010

We all want beautiful skin, especially during the “skin showing” months of summer. So how do we get it without spending a fortune at the Clinique counter? By eating antioxidant rich foods, that’s how. Your skin, just like every other organ in your body, needs antioxidant laden foods to keep it healthy and toxin free. Here are some of the most important foods to eat for beautiful skin. Try to get these delicious foods into your diet as often as possible and I promise you will love the results.

Foods for beautiful skin:

Sunflower seeds, Swiss chard, and almonds- What do they all have in common? Vitamin E! Vitamin E works to protect skin from ultra violet rays and rejuvenate the cells. Sauté swiss chard with garlic and olive oil and top with a mix of toasted almonds and sunflower seeds. Vitamin E never tasted so good!

Cauliflower, walnuts, and cabbage- Did you think wild salmon was the only place to get Omega 3 fatty acids? Well get excited because they are in vegetables too! Omega 3’s are essential in creating beautiful skin for they help maintain cell membranes. It is these membranes that act as barriers for the body, letting water and nutrients in, and keeping toxins out. Make an easy cabbage slaw topped with walnuts then steam cauliflower and serve with a lemon tahini sauce (also packed with Vitamin C). After these two dishes, your skin will be good to go!

Carrots, Kale, and Apricots- Not only are these foods quick and easy to get your hands on, they also serve up a giant does of Vitamin A (aka Beta Carotene). Vitamin A is involved in the repair and growth of body tissues, which is particularly beneficial when dealing with sun damaged skin. Stir-fry carrots and kale with garlic, ginger, and soy sauce for a great side dish. For the apricots, try throwing them on the grill for a great summer dessert!

Bell peppers, broccoli, and strawberries- Loaded with more vitamin C than an orange, these foods work to create collagen in the skin and protect your lovely epidermis from oxidative stress. Best ways to eat them? Grill the peppers and broccoli or eat them raw with hummus. As for strawberries, just pop them in your mouth (or put them in a crisp).

Shitake mushrooms, cod and shrimp- Mushrooms (both shittake and crimini), cod, and shrimp are chock full of selenium, a potent nutrient that promotes skin elasticity and quality. Broil cod with a fresh tomatoes and basil. For the shrimp and mushrooms, toss them into an easy Thai curry. So good!
