Find Your Inner Peace

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Living in such a bustling city, it sometimes feels like all we are ever doing is trying to keep up with our own schedules. Make it a point to try to slow your life down a bit for a change.  Going through the motions can start to feel robotic, but if you take the time to contemplate your life and your goals you will feel not only more focused but more at peace with where you are now. At CRAVE we believe that there are many different ways to find peace, whether it’s practicing yoga, getting pampered, or re-arranging your living space. Check out our picks for the best places and ways to add a little more zen to your life.

Still Yoga

At Still Yoga owned Erika Glass, you can practice Anusara Yoga. Anusara means “flowing with grace” or “to follow your heart”, and it is heart-oriented and spiritually inspiring. Erika opened her stuiod with the purpose of creating a place for positive change and health in the community, which sounds to us like a great mission statement. Your body, mind and conscience will thank you for visiting this sustainable studio. Sounds like a great way to start down the path of  finding more peace in your life. Click.

The Painted Nail

Definitely a way to experience some Hollywood glamour, The Painted Nail owned by Katie Cazorla creates an exclusive vibe so that you will feel spoiled and pampered. They offer a VIP mani/pedi cabana which features massage chairs and flat screen TVs so you can feel like a celeb for the day. Beautiful lavender walls and plush, living room style chairs certainly fall under our definition of finding inner peace. Click.

Feng Shui Living

Want to find balance and peace in your life but don’t know where to start? How about letting LA based fen shui expert Jayme Barrett increase the harmony in your abode. Jayme describes feng shui as a practical tool that can have a multitude of positive benefits which can, “restore your health and vitality, create a beautiful and peaceful environment, jump start your career or business, and find your purpose in life”. Still recovering from a bad living situation you had in the past? The art of feng shui can even “cleanse energy from past partner or roommate”. Release control of your current arrangements and allow this ancient art to let the positive energy flow. Click.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Did you know that March is Women’s History Month? Women’s History Month can be traced back to 1911 when the first International Women’s Day was celebrated. But it didn’t become a month long celebration until 1987. The popularity of women’s history celebrations continues to spread as more people are becoming aware of the contributions of women and girls. A President’s Commission on the Celebration of Women in History in America recently sponsored hearings in many parts of the country. The Women’s Progress Commission will soon conduct hearings to promote interest in preserving areas that are relevant in American women’s history. Some of the groups promoting this interest are state historical societies, women’s organizations, and groups such as the Girl Scouts of the USA. CRAVE would like to celebrate Women’s History month by selecting five women who have made a positive impact in the last ten years.

Hillary Clinton
During the last decade, she was First Lady, Senator, serious presidential candidate of a major political party, and Secretary of State, First former First Lady to hold major elective office, January 2001 (Senator from New York); first woman candidate for U.S. president to almost win a nomination from a major political party (declared candidacy January 2007, conceded June 2008) and first former First Lady to serve in the cabinet, in her capacity of U.S. Secretary of State, confirmed January 2009. All of this after her presidential husband cheated on her for the whole world to see. Need I say more?

Oprah Winfrey
Oprah was the first black billionaire, as reported by Forbes in April 2004. Although she is not in politics or changing laws, her power and conviction is known the world over. She has used her power again and again to shed light on good causes on everything from women who are sold into slavery to animal cruelty. Her latest endeavor is getting people to stop talking and texting on the phone while driving. She puts massive amounts of money into charitable causes and her show is now approaching an unbelievable 25 year run. In 2009 she announced that the The Oprah Winfrey Show will end in 2011. It’s hard to find a woman who doesn’t know who she is.

Melinda Gates
Melinda Gates is the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is the largest transparently operated private foundation in the world. The foundation is “driven by the interests and passions of the Gates family.” The primary aims of the foundation are, globally, to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty, and in America, to expand educational opportunities and access to information technology. The foundation, based in Seattle, Washington, has an endowment of US$35.1 billion as of October 1, 2008. The scale of the foundation and the way it seeks to apply business techniques to giving makes it one of the leaders in the philanthrocapitalism revolution in global philanthropy. In 2007 its founders were ranked as the second most generous philanthropists in America. Bill and Melinda were also named Time magazine’s Persons of the Year in December 2005.

Michelle Obama
Because Michelle is the first African American first lady and the first wife of an African American President, she has an influence and gets attention that prior first ladies may not have received. Michelle represents the loving, working mother who came from difficult circumstances, had the opportunity to attend an Ivy League school, and achieve great things in the causes that she’s taken on as a lawyer, and now, as a first lady. Even her fashion sense is turning heads because she tends to wear little known designers, giving them well-deserved attention, instead of going for the more typical pricier names that everyone would expect. When Michelle decided to grow a vegetable garden outside the White-House, all of a sudden it was all the rage. Right now she is taking on reducing childhood obesity and encouraging children to have a healthy active lifestyle.

Ellen DeGeneres
Though it is easy to argue that Ellen doesn’t have half the achievements under her belt as any of the rest of these women do, her talk show and her name have become so synonymous with positivity and acceptance, it seems that laughter really is the best medicine. Besides being widely adored and accepted as an openly gay woman, Ellen and her talk show have won the daytime Emmy for Best Talk Show and talk show host 4 years in a row and the show averages about 3.0 million viewers per episode, according to daytime television ratings, which makes it one of the highest-viewed daytime shows. The refreshing style of her humor and the unyielding extent of her kindness make her a stand out woman of the last decade.

CRAVE LA Best of Women Owned Businesses Tour

Friday, February 19th, 2010

This past weekend CRAVE, along with a small but mighty group of local bloggers, writers, and friends, took to the streets of LA for a fun filled day of shopping and discovery.  We joined forces with Chevy’s Best of Tours to create the CRAVE LA Best of Women Owned Businesses Tour and traveled to four amazing businesses soon to be featured in the upcoming CRAVE LA guidebook. After brief hellos and an introduction to the day, we hopped in to our chauffeur-driven car of choice and got on the road. The sleek and sexy collection of Chevys included a Camaro, an Equinox (our personal favorite, well, after the red hot Camaro), a Malibu, and an Avalanche, all complete with On Star concierge service to help us navigate through the crowded streets.

Our first stop was Calleen Cordero on Beverly Blvd.  This chic boutique is filled with a carefully crafted selection of the most beautiful shoes, belts, bags, and accessories you’ve ever seen. Just as much about comfort and function as it is about high fashion, Calleen is out to “prove that hand crafted luxury can be made in the U.S.A”. All of the products are handmade right here in her North Hollywood Factory by the 45 artisans she employs.

Next we traveled across town to Santa Monica where we visited STUDIO BEAUTYMIX at Fred Segal.  The ultimate stop for beauty lovers worldwide, Studio Beautymix is truly a feast for the eyes.  Long time store manager Rosie walked us through the lavish 250 lines of makeup, fragrance, bath and body products, and accessories in the store.  She shared founder Robin Coe-Hutshing’s story and showed us some of her favorite products like their signature Memoire Liquide fragrances and brand new line Soft Corp before letting everyone loose for some power shopping!

Up next was The Drybar in Brentwood.  LA’s first blowout only salon opened their doors just one day before we visited and is already buzzing with press.  While we sipped champagne, owner Allie Webb took a few minutes to share her story.  We love the selection of fun blowouts offered like the sleek, smooth Manhattan, or the messy and beachy Mai Tai.  We adore the beautiful, bright, and modern décor too and know where we’re coming the next time we need a “big night out” ‘do.

After a full day of shopping and beautifying, we headed back across town towards Silverlake for our fourth and final destination; Valerie Confections.  A perfect ending to an indulgent day, and a very timely stop for the day before Valentine’s Day! Valerie Gordon greeted us with a huge tray of scrumptious chocolate treats all handmade on site.  Our personal favorite was their signature Almond Fleur De Sel Toffee.  Need we say more?

As we said our goodbyes, each guest went home with a very generous pile of goodies from all of the stores we visited as well as a few treats from some other special CRAVE ladies and Chevy.  Thank you to all who participated on what we think was an incredible and fun day.  We loved getting to know each and every one of you and made some great memories along the way. Lastly, we want to send a very special thank you to those strong and inspiring women for sharing their stories with us. Hat’s off to you for following your dreams. We love what you have accomplished!

A New Twist on the Theme Song

Monday, February 15th, 2010

A Theme Song.
Normally when you think of a theme song you think of the first 30 seconds of a TV Show or news broadcast. That annoying thirty second melody that plays over and over in our heads days after we have watched the show. But this week we take a new look at the theme song. We asked around on Twitter and Facebook and came up with a fabulous list of songs people consider their “theme songs” for life.

These are songs that lifts you up and makes you feel good. Songs that starts a fire and keeps you going. Songs that you dance around in your bedroom listening to while you sing into your hair brush. These are the songs that define us. Everyone has one hidden some where inside of them. It might be your phone ring or the song that plays in your headphones while you work out or before a big meeting – whenever you use it and however it makes you feel we thank you all for sharing your themes.

Here is a complete list of the suggested theme songs:

For your listening pleasure go to the complete playlist on the blip.fm page titled CRAVEThemeSongs.

And next time you need a pick me up or inspiration, crank up one of these tunes and sing out – you might be surprised just how good it makes you feel!

Best of Fitness Tips for the New Year

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

personal_trainer

The New Year has just begun which means it is time to start following through on all those New Year’s resolutions you have been setting for yourself! For many of us that inevitably comes down to the same thing each January- a renewed commitment to a healthier, more fit lifestyle! We asked a few of our favorite local fitness experts for their tips on how to start the year of right.

Christine Kwok of Balanced Strength

  • Make a date with yourself. Pick days & times for when you will do something physically active. Block it off in your calendar–in ink–so that you can’t break your date.
  • Ease into a workout schedule. If you were previously sedentary, start with two 30 minute sessions on your calendar per week (you can add more time if your schedule allows). Progress monthly by adding more days until you are working out for the recommended minimum of 30 minutes per day, 5 times per week. Slow progression ensures success, as it doesn’t become a time burden on your already busy schedule.
  • If you can, take the more active option. Examples: stairs instead of the elevator, restroom on another floor, dance while you cook, shoulder blade squeezes while washing your hair, balance on one leg while brushing your teeth, stand while on phone calls, etc.
  • Drink lots of water. A well hydrated body equates to healthier metabolism, joint function, and mental acuity. It also helps to prevent cramping while working out and promotes faster workout recovery.

Jenna Phillips of Mission Possible

  • Don’t set the bar too high- make realistic goals for yourself and do not expect instant results.
  • Write resolutions/goals down on a piece of paper that you will see EVERYDAY
  • Crash diets will fail, focus on the food you eat day by day
  • Add more fiber and go easy on calorie-packed sauces
  • Don’t let it get boring, keep your diet varied with different types of cuisine

Jennifer Williams  of Pop Physique

  • In the New Year: you may be coming back to fitness after a holiday break or trying to start a new program. Don’t push too hard at first. You will be able to build strength quickly again with muscle memory.
  • Breathe-the diaphragm is connected to your lowest deepest abdominal muscle (the transverse abdominus) and using sharp exhales allows you to connect the breath to an inward movement of your abdominal muscles.
  • Eat Breakfast and snack! A small breakfast that includes fiber, protein, and carbohydrate to get your body moving and provide energy for your workout. Well placed snacks throughout the day that combine carbohydrate and protein (a skim milk string cheese and a small organic apple)
  • Stay deep in the muscle with small controlled moves. We use isometrics and simply put that is holding the muscle contraction and moving with that hold. It is a very effective and efficient way of sculpting the entire body.

Stephanie Kagel of Stephanie’s Training

  • Holidays are over and many sugar temptations are gone.  This is a great time to get back on track with reducing refined sugar in your diet.  Some sources of refined sugar are candy, breakfast cereal and prepackaged food.
  • Starting to exercise is great.  Remember to do both cardiovascular and muscle toning exercises.  Muscle is half the size of fat, so the more muscle you have, the smaller your body.
  • Flexibility is also very important.  With the New Year brings new stresses, increasing muscle tension and chance of injury. Help relieve the muscle tension through slow and controlled stretches and avoid any ballistic motion.  The increased flexibility will not only reduce your stress, it will also help you perform your muscle exercise more safely.

Time Saving Solutions: Dry Shampoo

Friday, October 30th, 2009

dryshampoo

Who really wants to wash their hair every day? For years I used my mother’s second day hair ‘trick’ of sprinkling baby powder on my crown to absorb excess oil. The technique is fine in a quick pinch but the heavy white residue can leave embarrassing flakes on your clothing and look messy under bright lights.

Thankfully a new generation of dry shampoos exist that enable you to sleep in longer, preserve a blow out or get a mid-day volume lift.

Check out our favs below.

The All Nighter is made with natural plant-based ingredients and natural minerals, gently scented with essence of tangerine (to freshen without being too perfume-y). The All Nighter Styling Powder also contains real silk powder to add manageability to hair, and it imparts a luxurious satiny feel. It’s even available in six shades which is great news for brunettes.

Lulu Organics hair powder is made with white clay, baking soda, USDA Organic corn starch and rice powder, and Oregon Tilth Certified Organic horsetail powder and essential oils. This earth friendly formula is available in four delicious, distinctive scents: Lavender/Clary Sage; Patchouli/Amber; Jasmine; and Tuberrose.

Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo is based on softening, protective oat extract, cyclodextrins and natural polysaccharides to clean the hair without washing, as often as required. Your hair regains volume and lightness within minutes. It’s a bit pricey and hard to find in stores, but it’s worth it for the scent, and lack of residue this project leaves.

Ever use a dry shampoo, dish about it here?
