Birchwood Cafe has what you CRAVE

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis, near the University of Minnesota’s West Bank, is a vibrant community of immigrants, college kids and young families. One gem, nearly hidden in an unassuming residential area, is Tracy Singleton’s Birchwood Cafe.

Offering an edited, delicious menu of brunch options, soups, salads and sandwiches, that focus on locally sourced and grown produce and grains, free-range eggs and fair-trade coffee, this cafe quickly won over all seven members of my group with its home-cooked taste. The bright, smallish cafeteria was nearly bursting with diners, mostly young adults and older couples without children. Luckily, we were able to cobble together enough tables and chairs for all of us. We all ordered separately at the counter, then waited with our numbered flags at our table.

I had the delicious combo meal of a half Wild Rice and Pecan Turkey Salad sandwich and cup of Coconut-Carrot-Ginger soup. It was wonderful. The crunchy, nutty texture and flavor of the wild rice paired perfectly with the pecans and turkey. The soup was a big hit, sweet and creamy with just a hint of spiciness from the ginger. I loved it, and so did all my friends who tried it.

My boyfriend, the only male member of our gathering, ordered the Lamb Gyro. He had asked specially for it to be made with real lamb strips, since it normally comes with lamb sausage or a meat substitute. They were able to accommodate this request. As usual, I had to steal a taste. The tabouleh was perfectly fresh and tangy, fresh vegetables, and the lamb was seasoned perfectly.

My sister got their Grass-fed Beef Stew, which was the featured entree that week. She loved it; tender meat and vegetables with a heap of mashed potatoes mounded in the center of the bowl. It came with a side of bread.

Other items ordered were the Beet and Cheese salad, the combo with Chipotle BBQ Tofu sandwich and the carrot-ginger soup, the Cheese personal-sized pizza: featuring a generous sprinkling of watercress and a banana pepper, and the combo of a deli salad and cup of the favorite Carrot-Ginger soup. A few of the brownies were also tried, which were declared quite sweet.

Birchwood Cafe also serves Sweet Cheeks Baby food and Izzy’s Ice Cream.

Stacie Clark’s tips for everyone in 2010 – no matter what age or fitness level you are at, these tips are sure to help you meet your fitness goals! These tips tie in with Tiger Athletics overall philosophy of sound mind, sound body.

1. 11 Day Rule:  It takes 11 days to create a positive reinforced behavior (habit).  After you’ve established this, by then you should be able to gain enough knowledge and experience to move to the next level.  No matter what age or fitness level, everyone jumps off the bandwagon time and time again.  Stay focused and remember to implement a stretching or yoga protocol in your program to elongate muscles, increase ROM (range of motion), improve breathing, helps injury prevention and promotes recovery.

2. 10% Rule:  Use this guideline to improve training performance without risk and injury.  What do I mean by that?
Whether you are just beginning a new exercise program or training for your tenth race, it is essential to progress at the right pace to meet your goals and avoid injuries.  Increase your time or length of workout by 10% a week, gradually.  The 10% rule is an easy way to gauge your training increases to get the most from your workouts while reducing your risk of injury.

3.
Involve the family.  Families that train together, stay together.  Get the kids involved and set the example.  It’s a lifestyle.

Jillian’s 3 Tips for Busy Moms (Families) to Live Happily Ever Active:

1. Bring Balance into your life:  You and your kids will listen better and improve focus and attention when you BALANCE – Literally!  Whether brushing your teeth, quizzing your kiddo on spelling, trying to get you tot to listen, washing the dishes, playing catch – Stand on one leg both of you!  Normal Adult Single Leg Stance Values = 60 secs + without use of hands or help!<

2. Learn Sun Salutation A: Google it!  You do not have to be pretzel-like in you flexibility to practice yoga. In fact, a traditional sun salutation is not just for flexibility, but also warms the body, works the heart, burns calories, strengthens the core, tones the arms, lengthens the spine. focuses the mind and, well, – makes for a happy day!  And you can do 5 Sun Salutations in under 5 minutes!  With you little ones practice counting out loud with each pose or challenge your teens to a Chaturanga-double-dog dare: How many times in a row from Down Dog through Chaturanga in a row!<

3.Commercial Break for the Core:  So you are catching up on the news or watching your favorite family show – It’s OK – we know you watch TV, just don’t be a couch potato.  Forget DVR and fast forward – during commercials is a great time to tone the core. For one minute each practice these 3 Pilates Moves:  1-Roll Down:  Sit with legs out straight and slowly and smoothly roll down to back one vertebrae at a time then back up without lifting your legs or hunching the shoulders please!  2- Teaser Hold – Sit in a “V’ shape with legs as straight as you can (bend to modify) – then try to lift arms up to sky  3-Side Twist:  Begin on hands and knees then move into a modified Right side plank by lifting left arm to sky and extending left leg out and back with foot strongly anchored to ground and held in place.  Twist at Waist to bring left arm under right- repeat for 30 secs then switch to other side 30 secs.

Overflowing with great treats

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

overflowcafeChillingly cold winds swipe at our faces and tug at the scarves we have wrapped snugly around our necks. Searching for a warm place to chat and eat, my friends and I light upon the perfect option. Overflow Expresso Cafe! Their blazing fireplace, hot soups, coffee and tea are just what we need. Overflow has been a favorite hangout for my friends and I ever since Molly Barnhart opened it in June 2007.

Overflow has attracted a steady crowd of college students and neighborhood residents from its beginning. The cafe is housed in a loft-style building (former Kemps headquarters) and was renovated into a cheerful and welcoming two-level space. A large cup and saucer fountain takes center stage, highlighting Molly Barnhart’s desire to make the cafe a place overflowing with kindness and love. There is plenty of seating, free wi-fi and a collection of board games to make everyone feel welcome. The cozy fireplace is surrounded by couches and comfortable chairs and is guaranteed to keep you feeling toasty! In the summer, patrons can sit on the sunny deck that overlooks the pond and waterfall. Local artists’ work often graces the walls and occasionally local musicians come to play for an evening.

On chilly days, I like to order a cup of the creamy wild rice soup and a steaming hot turtle mocha. The menu has a complete selection of expresso and coffee drinks, as well as sodas, teas, lemonades, smoothies, and juices. They also make great sandwiches and rice crispy bars. In the summer, come in for a refreshing rose lemonade — surprisingly delicious!

A brunch to CRAVE at Maria’s Cafe

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010
Maria's Cafe

Maria's Cafe

When feathery ice crystals etch your windows, when snow banks force you to cross the street at the corners, when each breath seems to freeze your lungs and eyelashes, your daydreams start to revolve around getting warmer. Save your vacation time for a beach escape by gathering with friends at your favorite brunch spot. Maria’s Cafe at the Ancient Trader’s Market in South Minneapolis is the perfect place to relax with delicious food, live music and conversation that will make you feel like you are on a sunny vacation.

Maria’s Cafe is a Columbian restaurant whose fabulous menu is filled with delicious offerings. Maria Hoyos included offerings that will please everyone with traditional Columbian food like Huevos Pericos (think egg tacos with salsa), as well as a Columbian take on American favorites such as chocolate chip pancakes and omelets. Find traditional breakfasts under the Saturday and Sunday Specials including ripe plantains or sauteed yucca, beans, Arepa, scrambled egg and sausages. Their delicious tropical juices will have you dreaming of the Caribbean.

My favorite breakfast menu item is the plantain pancakes with cotija cheese. The pancakes are wonderful, and truly allow the flavor of plantain to come through. The plantain is enhanced by the savory cotija cheese. The corn pancakes are also popular, and Maria serves each pancake with her special toppings and includes maple syrup. Add just a little to allow the full flavor to come through. Usually, just one of these huge pancake fills me up, making Maria’s Cafe ideal for families and those on a budget. If you want a table, go early! This family-friendly cafe fills up fast with large groups and couples, and stays quite busy into the afternoon on weekends.
