Overflowing with great treats

overflowcafeChillingly cold winds swipe at our faces and tug at the scarves we have wrapped snugly around our necks. Searching for a warm place to chat and eat, my friends and I light upon the perfect option. Overflow Expresso Cafe! Their blazing fireplace, hot soups, coffee and tea are just what we need. Overflow has been a favorite hangout for my friends and I ever since Molly Barnhart opened it in June 2007.

Overflow has attracted a steady crowd of college students and neighborhood residents from its beginning. The cafe is housed in a loft-style building (former Kemps headquarters) and was renovated into a cheerful and welcoming two-level space. A large cup and saucer fountain takes center stage, highlighting Molly Barnhart’s desire to make the cafe a place overflowing with kindness and love. There is plenty of seating, free wi-fi and a collection of board games to make everyone feel welcome. The cozy fireplace is surrounded by couches and comfortable chairs and is guaranteed to keep you feeling toasty! In the summer, patrons can sit on the sunny deck that overlooks the pond and waterfall. Local artists’ work often graces the walls and occasionally local musicians come to play for an evening.

On chilly days, I like to order a cup of the creamy wild rice soup and a steaming hot turtle mocha. The menu has a complete selection of expresso and coffee drinks, as well as sodas, teas, lemonades, smoothies, and juices. They also make great sandwiches and rice crispy bars. In the summer, come in for a refreshing rose lemonade — surprisingly delicious!
