Interview with Entrepreness Sadie Lincoln of barre3 exercise studio

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Sadie Lincoln, founder of barre3, is full of energy, passion, and exceptional expertise in what she does. barre3 is an exercise studio specializing in group classes designed to transform the body to one of equal balance, strength, and flexibility. It incorporates the ballet barre, yoga, and Pilates. She explains that the “3″ in barre3 symbolizes balance in all aspects–business, practice, and life. And her constant challenge and mission in life is to maintain that balance. Not only did Sadie launch her company because of her expertise and passion for fitness, she is also a devoted wife, a hands-on mother, and has strong knowledge and experience in business and entrepreneurship–She wants to balance and maintain all of those aspects in her life! Sadie spent 10 years working beside the founder and CEO of 24 Hour Fitness during a rapid global expansion, and helped grow the company into the largest chain of health clubs worldwide! From a single Portland location, in just two years, Sadie and her team have franchised and opened numerous barre3 locations in other parts of Oregon, the Philippines, and soon to be Washington!

Read our interview with Sadie …

Can you tell me a little about yourself?
I created barre3 around being a devoted wife and mother of two. With my business, I can be a hands-on parent–take my children to school and pick them up, volunteer at the school, spend quality time with them, etc. And since my husband and I are business partners, I also enjoy spending time with him and us working together.

What will people experience here that’s different from other exercise studios?
Our workouts are highly effective, efficient, and full of energy. Every second in this workout counts for fast body shaping results and long term postural benefits. You’ll leave feeling that you received 100% out of your workout and you’ll never feel bored. Overall, what I think makes us different is our consistency in giving you an effective workout, but there are also a variety of classes and knowledgeable instructors to keep it creative and challenging.

How did you come up with the concept for your workout?
I’ve taught for 20 years and pulled together everything I knew, and put together a workout that incorporated my experience in Lotte Berk, Yoga, Pilates, and traditional group exercise.

How often do you teach? How often do your instructors teach?
I teach 7 to 12 classes a week, and do all the training and workshops for instructors also. There are 20 instructors, and they teach anywhere between 2 to 8 classes per week. We all love teaching and we love our clients. It’s such a giving environment here, but we also get a lot back in return.

You recently opened a location in SE Portland back in November. In addition, you also franchise barre3 and work directly with the owners to help them create a unique experience, but also consistent with the barre3 philosophy and principles. You’re hands-on with literally every aspect of managing and owning a business.
Yes, we do everything here ourselves, from changing the light bulbs and washing the windows to lending a hand at managing and coordinating. We love to empower one another to do great things. My husband and I started this business on only our life savings, no loans, no debt and we’re proud to be sharing it with others who are passionate about fitness, compelled to run their own business and also in-tune with balancing their professional and personal lives.

What are some of the things you look for or do when franchising or licensing your business?
First off we look for those who are passionate about exercise and fitness, passionate about barre3 and share our mission for balance. Chemistry is also very important for us, and we want to work with people who we connect with and feel that they have the right mindset and capabilities to run barre3. Financial backing is also very important, and a background in fitness. When everything matches up, we go through a 2-3 week training program (once a month after that) for everything. We really want to grow barre3 in the Pacific Northwest and then expand, globally. We also want to grow slow enough so that we can maintain our quality. Each location is different, it’s fitting and authentic to where its at, whether that’s Australia or SE Portland. And although the steps sound simple, we work very hard to keep our quality consistent by selecting qualified entrepreneurs! More info here.

Tell me about your recent project, a 40-minute barre3 Total Body Lift Workout DVD with Exercise TV.
I received a lot of requests from my clients asking for postures while on vacation or away for work, so I created a workout video for all levels and all that’s required is a sturdy chair! In addition, the DVD comes with a Mini FitBALL. Having an exercise mat and light hand-held weights will also benefit you in this workout. Since our classes build up each time, it may take awhile to get back into it so a video helps supplement while clients are away, and you’ll experience barre3′s transformative benefits at home. The DVD and FitBALL will retail for $19.99, which is a great deal since the ball itself sells for $12. The bundle will be coming out soon and will be sold at barre3 locations in addition to online.

What are some of the challenges you face running your own business?
I believe it’s both a challenge and a life-long mission for me, and that’s of course to be balanced, and to be present with my family and with myself. To be present for my children when I’m spending time with them, being present with my husband. When we have date night, there’s no talk of work! And also to take care of myself and take care of my own body, since most of my time I am taking care of everyone around me!

What are the rewards of having your own business?
Wow, there are SO many! The biggest reward is being the DECISION-COMMITTEE OF ONE–that’s being my own boss. Secondly, I love empowering other women, whether it be in the exercise studio, helping them with their health and wellness, or working directly with the owners of our franchise locations to help them grow and learn, and run a business that’s fitting for them.

How can someone make the most of out their exercise at barre3?
First it would be to honor their own truth level–and that means knowing where they are, listening to their bodies, understanding how its working for them, nurturing weaknesses, etc. And it also will benefit them immensely to come consistently, more than once per week. 3-4 would be ideal, but it really depends on what they can do and fit into their schedules.

Is there anything you’d like to share with our readers?
It’s hard to describe what barre3 is in words. I’d love to invite all CRAVE readers, especially business owners to visit barre3, take the classes or even just get together for community and inspiration. I love connecting with local business owners to learn about best practices and to connect on a more social level.

More information on the Total Body Lift Workout DVD will be able on barre3′s website soon!

This Craving Comes in the Form of Silver and Stone – Sahlia Michelle Jewelry

Handmade stacked rings by Sahlia Michelle

What’s it like to be surrounded by beautiful things all day long? I bet it’s healthy. On a lovely and sunny afternoon I visited Sahlia at her studio inside the Ford Building in Southeast. Walking around what seemed like a maze with high ceilings and big double doors all around, I finally reached studio #352, Sahlia Michelle Jewelry Design.

I gazed and ogled at all of her pieces, and each piece had a quality about it that made each one really special. Both delicate and strong, feminine and edgy. And all together, her designs were very cohesive and her studio space and props really play a part in making it that way. The wooden frames and ribbon, the plants, driftwood, big open windows and overall natural environment really made this a fun and relaxing place to be.

Sahlia also shared with me a few projects she’s really excited about. She showed me several new bridal designs, some necklaces and earrings incorporating white turquoise spikes, her new elegant website design and also an upcoming photo shoot she was thrilled to put together! I’m anxious myself to see all of her projects when they’re in their finished stages.

Here are some photos I wanted to share with all of you from my visit …

Torched chain necklaces – I just love the gradient!

Can you spot a CRAVE Portland business card?

The one and only!

Above is the pair of earrings I walked away with, a new lovely pair of sterling silver and white turquoise spike earrings! They also come in different sizes and lengths, including some with the torched chains, and Sahlia also does custom orders so you should definitely check out her studio to see all the different varieties. AND she has some gorgeous rings! www.sahliamichelle.com — and remember, she’s revamping her site so check back in the following weeks to see the new and improved.

Staff Insight: Beauty Secrets

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Whoever said “beauty is only skin deep” hasn’t been where we’ve been, and experienced what we have with some of the most fab health & beauty products and services in town. Taking care of yourself does wonders for both mind and body. Maybe it starts with long luscious lashes and ends with our favorite fitness class, but at the end of the day, we’ve tried what works and we’re here to share it with you! Take a look at several of our CRAVE Portland staff’s very own beauty secrets. And yes! Many of them you can find locally and in your brick & mortar beauty store or salon.

Sexy Hair, Powder Play: This is my favorite quick fix on-the-go product. The fastest, easiest way to get volume in 13 seconds! Easy to travel through TSA, too — it’s POWDER, baby!

John at Urbaca Salon: John is so amazing. I plan for a living and cater to clients, so the last thing I want to do is plan anything for myself! Jon knows what looks good on me, my face structure and style – I just sit and relax while he does the work.

I Luv Lashes: Michelle makes me feel sexy and beautiful with my long lashes! Very affordable with flexible scheduling, which works great with my busy life.

Bask Tanning Salon: It’s my lifesaver. I’m heading to Belize soon – and my pretty, white tush hasn’t seen the sun in ages. Bask has great tanning services, so I can get a quick base AND a beautiful, even spray tan at a very reasonable price before bearing my bikini. Located in John’s Landing, off of Macadam. Staff is nice too!

Kiehl’s Moisturizing Foundation: I love how quick and easy this is…  It has amazing coverage that blends well with any of my skin tones (no matter what time of year), and a little goes a long way. It also has SPF! Available at Kiehl’s store on NW 23rd.

Portland Team Fitness: I believe beauty and fitness go hand-in-hand – BUT, just because I believe this does not mean that I follow it as often as I should. Nonetheless, when I feel like whipping my butt back into shape I head here. The classes are fun and energetic (super for people with ADD like me) and Alayne is a great teacher. She will work with your body to help you achieve your personal fitness goals.

Epionce skincare: I’ve been using this skincare line for nearly two years and my skin loves me for it. In return, I get radiant and healthy skin that functions at its best. Get a complimentary skin consultation and learn more about Epionce at Teko Skincare Studio on NW Marshall Street between 11th & 12th Avenue.

Christian, my hairstylist! Long hair or short hair, I’ve done it all and I’ve rarely had a bad hair day since coming to Christian. Find master hairstylist Christian at Rock Paper Scissors on 4422 SE Hawthorne (503) 863-4819.

LiLash eyelash stimulator: This easy to use, magic-in-a-tube eyelash growth stimulator gives me long, natural lashes. No prescription, extensions or heavy mascara to deal with! It applies like a clear liquid eyeliner. One tube will last you more than 6 months! Available at Teko Skincare.

Urban Waxx Salon: I absolutely fell in LOVE with this waxing studio from my first visit. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and they make you feel right at home so you forget the pain of your bikini wax! Urban Waxx is located at 1036 NW 18th Avenue.

Top Ten Nail Salon: I’m never disappointed when I get a manicure or a pedicure here. High quality is consistent at an affordable price and the staff is so friendly and accommodating. Located at 3415 SE Hawthorne.

Acupuncturist Warren Trumbo L.Ac: Beauty comes from within, and acupuncture can help enhance your overall well-being so you not only look healthier, but most importantly feel healthier too. Warren creates a calm, soothing environment to naturally guide you on a healthy journey to wellness. His clinic is located at 2216 Southeast 50th Avenue, (503) 234-2539‎.

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray: This product adds the perfect amount of volume to my hair. I spray it evenly through before blow drying and the results are instantaneous. The volume stays all day without any of the usual crispy, sticky messes of regular hairsprays. Bumble and Bumble products are sold at Ziva Salon 610 NW 23rd Avenue.

Two Faced Shadow Insurance: I love to experiment with different eye shadows, but I quickly got tired of feeling like my effort and investment were wasted when the shadow disappeared by mid-day. Two Faced Shadow Insurance changed everything. This silicone-based primer makes blending eye shadows effortless and keeps them in place all day! Shadow Insurance can be found at Beautyfirst at 1407 NE Lloyd Center and larger retailers like Nordstrom and Sephora.

Creative Nail Design Air Dry Topcoat: I got this top coat on a whim one day and absolutely fell in love. The thick formula goes on streaky and in a matter of moments, melds together to form an impossibly glossy barrier of protection for your favorite polish. This top coat makes my at-home manicures look professional, and keeps chips at bay for almost two weeks. Best of all, I can skip protecting my nails while texting, typing, and digging around in my purse. Find CND Air Dry Topcoat at Kalista Salon & Spa 805 NW Glisan Street.

Interview with Entrepreness Claudia Bowers of Pravia Wines & Event, Founder of Best of Oregon Food & Wine Festival

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Claudia Bowers is the owner of Pravia Wines & Events, an event production company that specializes in food and wine events. From intimate winemaker dinners, to corporate parties and food and wine festivals that attract over 1,000 people, she does it all with elegance and professionalism. Claudia says she loves to entertain friends and family in her home, but I think that she caters to ALL of us in Oregon as the founder of Best of Oregon Food & Wine Festival! One of my favorite things about my job is talking to people who are passionate about what they do–Claudia is definitely one of them. I spoke to Claudia for nearly two hours, and learned so many new things about her life, her passion for celebrating culinary culture in Oregon, and left with plenty of advice about wine to share with you.

Here’s my interview with Claudia …

Would you like to share with us something interesting about yourself to start off the interview?
I love taking my puppy, Henry on walks with my boyfriend David. It’s a great way for us to all spend time together, have fun and catch up after a busy day. I also love sitting at home with a glass of wine watching movies. I love comedies and romance movies, and hate horror films! And of course, I also love entertaining. When I have time, I love to cook and have friends over. I grew up in a big, happy family and there was always food and lots of parties with friends and family. It becomes natural that I have parties nearly every other weekend at my own home!

You’re in the wine industry now, but where did you start out in your career?
I worked in the cosmetics industry for 17 years, and managed the multimillion dollar Estee Lauder Companies–which family of brands include Bobbi Brown, MAC, Clinique, La Mer, Prescriptives, Bumble and Bumble, amongst others. It was a very cutthroat industry.

So how did you transition into the wine industry, which is completely different than the cosmetics industry?
Well I’ve always been a wine appreciator. I had a good friend who worked as a NW sales manager for Rex-Hill Vineyards and she told me how great it was. To be honest with you, I then started working part-time too — just to get a wine discount! But I truly enjoyed the products, the story, the people … the entire industry! And I decided to completely transition into the wine industry. I then received training and wine education through the International Sommelier Guild and the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. I eventually became the General Manager for a local winery, planning events. But soon found myself working too many long and hard hours. I then decided to start my own business, because if I were to work 70 hours a week, I’d rather be working for myself!

Tell me more about your business, Pravia Wines and Events.
I wanted to offer the wine industry event planning by someone with a wine background. I only do food and wine events, and I have extensive understanding and knowledge of the wine industry, which makes me different from other event planners out there. I work with top chefs and restaurants in the region and Wine Country–working closely with wineries in the Northwest, including Oregon, Washington and Sonoma, California. I offer services for corporate parties, food and wine festivals, fundraising events, winery events, private parties and classes.

You founded the Best of Oregon Food & Wine Festival. Tell me more about this event.
This event showcases and celebrates the very best of Oregon’s culinary culture–world class wineries, restaurants, and culinary artisans. It’s important for us to have everything here and to support local businesses and operations. This event is a great way for us to send a message to Oregonians to keep our dollars IN Oregon. In addition, this event supports a great cause, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. So mark your calendars for August 14th, 2010 at the Reserve Vineyards & Golf Club for our next Best of Oregon Food & Wine Festival! There’ll be over 30 wineries from all over Oregon, 14+ restaurants, culinary education, cooking demonstrations, etc. In addition to everything we did last year, this year we’ll also have a special seafood chef to show you how to clean and prepare certain seafood. This is another way to promote ways to keep our dollars in Oregon. Instead of going out to buy your seafood, head on out to Garibaldi, take a boat out and catch your own food (crab), and take what you learned from our seafood chef to clean and cook it!

I recently attended the Kuni BMW Spring Wine event that you coordinated. In addition to working with Kuni several times a year, who are your other clients?
I am also coordinating Pinot in the Pearl (May 6th), the 15h anniversary of a local winery, events and parties for local wineries, Winemakers’ dinners, Cellar club members, etc. From winemakers dinner to major events, it ranges from 20 to over 1,000 guests!

All this talk about wine makes me crave for a glass right now! Do you have a favorite wine?
I don’t have a “favorite”. For me, it’s all about what I’m eating. Food shows better with the right wine and vice versa. So there shouldn’t be just one type of wine you have with everything! Although when I am just having a glass of wine by itself, I do enjoy the Oregon Pinot Noir. I’m also a seasonal drinker, so I choose my wines based on the weather. At parties, I always start my guests off with bubbles–sparkling wine!

You also teach classes, one of them Food and Wine Pairing. What are your favorite classes to teach?
My top three are definitely Wine 101, Food & Wine Pairing, and Regional Classes. Regional classes are where we learn about wines from different regions of the country. Lets say one class will be focused on wines from Spain, or New Zealand wine, or Tuscany wine from Italy.

That sounds so much fun! Where do you teach?
Mostly in a client’s home (minimum 10 people) or at a caterer. If I’m working with a caterer to pair a wine with certain foods, sometimes we can even work to schedule a private event at the restaurant itself. I love to “wow” people with knowledge, and love seeing the excitement they get learning about their palette.

What is a wine pet peeve of yours?
I have TWO major wine pet peeves and it has nothing to do with how one holds his or her glass! That is something that can be learned, and it also depends on preference, how he/she is comfortable holding it. My first pet peeve is when I see people chewing gum and drinking wine. There’s no way you can fully taste or experience a wine if you’re chewing gum! My second pet peeve is when someone wears strong fragrance when wine tasting. It completely interferes with the tasting. When that person walks into the room and you smell him or her, it changes your mood and kills the overall experience.

What are some tips and tricks you can share with us to learn more about wine?
There’s always something new to learn about wine. Find out where the wine shops are in your neighborhood or elsewhere. Sign up for classes and explore other regions, taste lots of wine and learn about new wines from around the world. Most of these wine shops will feature a new region all the time and they’re knowledgeable about their product. Secondly, there’s more than pinot noir (red wine) or Chardonnay out there. Just start tasting and don’t hold yourself back! Lastly, the best way to transition from white to red wine is to pick a pinot noir with a light body to start off with. If it’s too bold, it’ll be too dry and you won’t enjoy it. So start light!

My last question for you, Claudia: what is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
My business is like the child I’ve never had. The most rewarding aspect is when a vendor–either a winemaker or restaurant simply says “Thank You” for hosting this event, or “I enjoyed this event.” And I also love it when consumers tell me they had a good time at my events. I love connecting people and also making new friends myself!

Interview with Entrepreness Anne Bocci of Anne Bocci Boutique & Gallery

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Anne Bocci is a sweet and personable individual who not only takes pride in her boutique and her own jewelry designs, but also the creative work of others. When it comes to supporting and promoting independent designers and artists, call on Anne to be the one to receive that distinctly unique line with an open mind. Packed floor to ceiling with indie apparel, art, designer clothes, different jewelry, and oddities, Anne works like a museum curator to pick out the best lines that represent her boutique and her customers’. Anne’s boutique and art gallery, located in the heart of Multnomah Village, is cozy and vibrant–especially on a fun First Friday! In addition, Anne carries clothing designs from current Project Runway contestant, Seth Aaron Henderson!

Read our interview with Anne …

What three words describe your boutique best?

Tiny, artisan, eclectic. Hmm, maybe just a little unique shop in Multnomah Village. Since my boutique is teeny-tiny, I must choose my designers and pieces carefully. One of the designers I have had in here since day-one is Seth Aaron Henderson, a NW emerging apparel designer who is on Project Runway right now.

You also call your business a “gallery”- what kind of art or artists do you showcase?
When I first had the idea to open the boutique three years ago, no one was really mixing fine art with fashion. I love art and artists and wanted to showcase painters, wood turners, and mixed media artists alongside fashion designers and emerging artists. Maybe just blurring the line between boutique and gallery in the traditional sense. It used to be that tradition meant that fine art must be displayed on a clean white barren walls with nothing much around it. But these days, artists are seeking alternative spaces. Art venues aren’t necessarily limited to traditional galleries anymore. Now it’s becoming more common and other boutiques and venues are mixing the two. Not a week goes by, where a fine artist or designer doesn’t come to show me their pieces. I wish I had a bigger space!

At a fashion event, what would you most likely be doing?
Definitely, I’d be the one to make sure all the guests’ glasses were full, making the introductions, and seeing that everyone was having a good time.

Do you have a mentor or role model in your life?
My mentor is the father that raised me. As a baby I was adopted. I know today that I’m truly blessed to be raised my dad who provided a stable loving environment. He took over raising me and my adopted brother because our adopted mother was hospitalized. When I look back it was quite a feat for my father to care for two small kids by himself. When Mother’s Day comes around, I often find myself sending dad a card.

What do you love most about your job?
I like to personally interact with my customers. I’m not one who sits behind a desk and looks up from reading a book. I really want to help pick out that jaw-dropping silk red dress or create the perfect statement necklace or earrings to go with a dress they already have. The other thing I like most about my job is the customers. Getting to learn about their lives, their tastes, and their likes and dislikes.

I also love working with the designers and artists directly and am thrilled when I can call them directly to let them know their pieces have sold. One of my best-selling lines is Suzabelle from Seattle. She’s known for her coats and dresses and was named by Forbes Magazine as “the emerging designer to watch.”

Since I’m the owner, buyer, webmaster, party planner and sales person, I do like that I’m totally in charge and can make decisions at the drop of a pin for the customer. I can make the call, the mark-down, or the ultimate decision right then and there. It’s not like I have to call the manager or home office to get an answer. I remember when Gorden Dent, one of my handbag designers, first cold-called me on the phone wanting to show me his line. I said, “Sure, come show me now.” He was totally blown away because he had phoned so many boutiques and stores only to hear that the manager or buyer wasn’t available to see him.

I can see you really love you job! Last question for you, Anne — What do you have to say about shopping locally?
Lately, so many people now are instant businesses with their Etsy accounts, home parties, temporary pop-up stores and online sales. I just want to thank everyone who supports a true brick and mortar store. There’s something to be said about walking into your neighborhood boutique and touching and feeling the garment, trying it on, and hearing the story of how it’s made. Thanks for supporting your local family businesses!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m from the Midwest–Wisconsin, and have lived in Portland for eight years. I have a degree in fine arts, and first worked for another photographer before starting my own photography business six years ago.

Your specialty is wedding and portrait photography – is there another type of photographer that you like to do?
Although I don’t really promote it I also do commercial work. In addition, I have done photography for small businesses and have experience with interior and food photography as well as some fashion editorial.

What unique services or products do you offer?
We do a lot of customizing for weddings, and also work with couples from start to finish to know exactly what they want on their special day and deliver it to them. We also offer clean, modern photo album design which we do in-house.

Do you have staff or team members who help you out on your shoots?
I have an assistant for weddings, but it’s usually just me. This is on purpose, because I feel like I have a vision and I want to have full control of that at all times.

Where are some of your favorite spots to shoot in Portland?
I don’t like to go to the same spots and try to personalize it according to the couple. I’m always looking for fresh and new urban backgrounds to shoot.

What is a meaningful moment you were able to capture on film that sticks out in your mind?

The most meaningful moments to me are the ones that are captured quickly, here one second and gone the next. This happens especially with families and children, when a young child finally smiles or looks in your direction just in a time frame long enough for you to get it on film.

Do you like to work most with brides, grooms, children, couples, or pets?
I love working with the couple for their wedding and being a part of their celebration.

You must be busy with your photography business as well as being the creator of Art of Weddings. Tell us more about how you started this bridal event.
I started Art of Weddings five years ago as a way to get all the best vendors and creative professionals together in one place, once a year so that they can network and show their talent and skill to newly engaged couples looking for photography, catering, wedding attire, etc. This past event we got about 35 vendors together, which was a pretty intimate group

What are some of the challenges you face having your own business?
In the beginning it was pretty rough, but over the past six years I’m working at a comfortable pace for myself now. I was super busy and felt like I was saying “yes” to everything. Now I know I don’t need to and will probably book about 20 events a year (nearly every weekend in the summer, basically!) but it keeps me busy but not in over my head.

Where do you see yourself or your business 5 years down the road?
I’m in the process of refreshing, and will limit or take on fewer events so that I can do more fine art work for myself. Although that may mean that I won’t be able to work with everyone that I want to, doing fine art will undoubtedly increase my creativity and enhance my photography.

Interview with Entrepreness Lisa Watson of Cupcake Jones

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Lisa Watson loves to smile, she loves to laugh, to give back, and to share her beloved cupcakes with all her friends and her community. Lisa and her husband Peter are the owners of Cupcake Jones, a sweet cupcake shop on the corner of NW 10th & Everett in the Pearl District. A cozy little shop, as you walk in a glass display showcases some of the most beautiful confections. Depending on the day, the menu changes, but every day there are the staples: The Pearl, Downtown Cupcake Brown, and its infamous Velvet Painting: red velvet cake filled with vanilla bean pastry cream, topped with cream cheese icing and a hand candied rose petal. When I was there to meet Lisa for our interview, I was gifted with a delicious Mimosa Orange, one of February’s cocktail inspired cupcakes served only on Fridays.

I learned a lot about Cupcake Jones by talking to Lisa–that it’s not only there to serve you sweet, savory cakes made by professional pastry chefs, but also to support the community in very special ways, and to serve you and your closest friends on very special days.

We’re so happy you gave Portland a super cute cupcake shop. How did this happen?
My husband, Peter and I fell in love with the idea of it, and it just seemed like the perfect place where we could work together and spend time together. Also, my background is in the food industry so it was just so fitting.

If you could describe what Cupcake Jones is all about in three words, what would they be?
Fun, Quality, and Giving. Cupcake Jones is a fun atmosphere and we all have fun working together. It’s quality not only in the business, but also with the ingredients that are used and the integrity we hold. Lastly, it’s giving because we’ve made it that way since the beginning, and made it our mission to support the community that supports us.

Your staff always seems so happy, they seem to enjoy what they do.
Yes! All our bakers—pastry chefs, have all gone and graduated from culinary school. As professionals in the industry, I feel that makes them more committed to and empathetic of quality and high standards.

What’s a typical day at work like for you? What aspects of the business do you manage?
I manage all the sales and marketing, always thinking of new ways to try and keep Cupcake Jones on top of our customers’ minds. I also handle all the events: community outreach, wedding and catering.

What do you love most about your job?
I love the interaction with customers, especially devoted customers. I love to see all my friends and family who stop by.

You’re open 7 days a week, how to do you find time for yourself and family? What are your ways of relaxing?
[Laughs] Our friends come HERE! It’s been a difficult balancing act since we’ve opened. My husband and I haven’t taken a vacation in three years, but we’re planning our first one now. But it’s always fun working with him here.

So if you had one full day to do whatever you wanted, what would you do?
Definitely go to the beach! I also love to read, so it would be great to be able to get some time to just sit down and dive into a novel.

You are highly motivated to give back to the community through weekly donations–Blanchet house, local schools, Boys & Girls Club, animal shelters, etc. How does this work and how can we get involved?

We get a lot of requests for cupcake donations and gift certificates for auctions, amongst other things, and we try to fulfill as many as we can. Every Tuesday, we donate 5% of the sales for that day to a non-profit, which had been selected in a drawing. If you want to give back to your community and to support these organizations, all you have to do is treat yourself to a cupcake!

Your cupcakes give back too–how are they environmentally friendly?
We recycle everything that can be recycled, from packaging to paper towels. We also try to get as many ingredients locally at the Farmer’s Market. There’s low water usage for our fixtures, and we turn off all the lights in the kitchen after we’re done baking for the day.

Your cupcakes are healthier too. Does that mean I get to eat two or three more?
Yes, we never use shortening or artifical flavorings or colorings. That’s why you won’t see the greens and blues on our cakes. We use unsalted butter, natural flavors (like vanilla paste), and we make all our garnishes from scratch—no packaged sprinkles, powder, etc.

What are your most popular flavors?
Hands down, RED VELVET!

I see you’ve done a lot of events and catering. What event comes to mind, or what was the most elaborate project you did for a catered event?
We did a retirement party for a business that’s normally open 24 hours a day, so we did THREE parties in one day, during each shift and baked 160 dozen cupcakes. It was so sweet, the retired President of the company did come to all three shifts and celebrated.

Are you currently working on any new cupcake flavors?
The first year and a half we were all about trying new things, and now that we’ve gotten a better understanding of what our customers want and what sells the best, I think we’ve got our menu secured. Our menu does change every month with new flavors, but January will always have the same menu, February will always have the same menu … so you know what to expect from us and get the flavors you love most!

Lastly, do you plan on opening more locations in the future?
Yes, opening more locations is definitely part of our plan for the future. We actually hope to expand in other states—states that we’d love to visit all the time, of course!

Interview with Lifestyle Photographer, Bunn Salarzon

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Bunn Salarzon is a lifestyle photographer—with emphasis on “life.” She puts her heart into photography, and through each photo she takes, she brings out the most captivating moments, emotions, and personalities of each of her subjects. One thing is to be a photographer with great technique, but another is to be able to mesh technical skill with understanding and empathy for the subject, the setting, and the mood. I remember looking at a photoset of a newborn baby and her mother, and nearly whole-heartedly cried because it was so precious, so personal. That’s the kind of photographer I want at all the most important milestones in my life—graduation, marriage, family … It is quite possible that when I’m old and forgetful, Bunn’s photos may be the only things that will refresh my memory and bring warmth into my heart. Bunn is also downright funny and totally casual and cool, so photographing with her allows you to be yourself.

Bunn courageously booted corporate worklife to the curb and embraced her own life and her own dreams. She is an inspiration to all aspiring female entrepreneurs out there!

When and how did you become interested in photography?
Photography was an elective that I took during my Sophomore year in high school. That was (ahem!) 18 years ago. The only requirement was to have a 35mm SLR camera, which is what I found collecting dust in my uncle and aunt’s room. Nope, I never got their permission. I just jacked it!

Photography went from a favorite hobby to a full-time professional job. What compelled you to quit your corporate job and start your own business?
It didn’t take much when I realized that all I think about is photography. I looked forward to every session, even when it was only a practice session. I was anxious to see how much and fast I could grow by being curious. Of course, dealing with unhappy people in the corporate world made it so easy to analyze my own life to see what makes me happy. I didn’t want to be like those unhappy people, working for years and never following their dreams and being miserable about it. Therefore, I claimed my destiny and quit on the fly without any notice. Yeah, without a backup plan or savings account. I went for it … I followed my dreams. Although, I’m not even halfway there yet I’m more happy than I’ve ever been.

Did you imagine yourself to have become this successful and this busy?
I always have small goals for myself, small steps to reach those bigger goals. I sometimes feel like I haven’t made any progress until I look back on the two years then I realize just how far I’ve really come. Even in small steps there is success!

What do you love most about having your own business, besides being your own boss? Don’t be afraid to tell people about working in your pajamas … ha!
Actually, I can brag about working in my pajamas all day, every day! Besides not having a boss or alarm clock to stress about, having my own business means freedom. Not only am I able to do what I love, but I get to spend my days with the people I love. The corporate world forced me to spend 80% of my day with miserable people, pretending to be happy. I had only 20% of my day left for my friends and family, who most of the time would get the miserable side of me after a stressful day at work. That wasn’t fair. I had to make changes, and I’m so happy that I did!

What are some of the challenges you face?
The recession is not only affecting the average working class person, but mostly small business owners like myself. I definitely chose a difficult time in our economy to start my own business. But, if I’m going to be working hard at anything then it’s going to be something that I truly love – even if it means a huge pay cut and no health insurance. There is no greater reward than working for yourself.

Honestly—how much time do you spend editing photos?
It really depends on how many images per session or wedding, and how many orders I’ve got all at once. Because I’m such a perfectionist, it can mean four to six hours on one session. Of course, that time gets broken up in days not straight hours or my back and neck would never forgive me. And, I’m older now. Ouch!

What do you do to stay motivated, happy, and maybe even stress-free?
When I feel like I’m becoming a slave to my own work, I take a break from the computer. It can mean avoiding it all for a few days so I can refresh my mind and my eyes. I’ll hang out with my friends and family, reminding myself why I do what I do. Again, being my own boss has allowed me something no other boss can ever give me: Freedom. I can do whatever I want when I want. No rules.

What’s your favorite subject to shoot?
Contrary to popular beliefs, I have no romantic bone in my body. But, I do love to shoot engagements! This is when I have personal time with my couples—chat with them on how they met and who proposed. I like to hear what led them to this point in their lives and what’s in their future together. It gives me the chance to relive my own engagement story and wedding plans by living vicariously through them.

I’m interested in your destination wedding photography. Where have you traveled and what stands out to you most about traveling for your job?
I’ve received inquiries for destination weddings in Egypt and Mexico, although, they fell through I was lucky enough to shoot a wedding in Germany last July. Then, to start the new year I just got back from shooting a wedding in Hawaii! Destination weddings have helped me fulfill two of my favorites things: traveling and photography.

Do you ever take your husband along with you?
It’s awesome when my husband gets to tag along. My husband Romie got to go with me to Hawaii, but he stayed home when I was in Germany for three weeks. It was hard because Europe is full of romantic couples and in all the romantic men I saw my husband. It made me miss him a lot. He absolutely loves to travel just as much as I do. But, we do have someone at home who depends on us, his 82-year-old mom lives with us. She has dementia and too much traveling can be hard on her body. Therefore, Romie stays home and allows me to pursue my dreams. I couldn’t have asked for a more understanding and supportive partner in life and love. I’m a lucky girl.

What do you hope to accomplish in this New Year and where do you see yourself five years down the road?
I didn’t make a list, but made “The List.” It’s my New Year’s resolution that I posted on my blogsite for all to see. But, more importantly, as a cyber-reminder to my own self. This year, I am making it all about traveling and weddings. In fact, I’m flying out in a few days to return to the Philippines and spend a few days in Indonesia because I’ve got a few sessions lined up in Bali. I can’t wait! This is my immediate future, but in five years, I see myself shooting a family session … My own family. My husband holding our son and daughter. A long overdue session. No, I haven’t completely given up on the stork. I hope he finds our doorstep soon.

Please tell us what else you’d like CRAVE readers to know about upcoming events:
I’m a fan of giveaways, I love receiving it and giving it away. I just wrapped my first contest of the year (a free boudoir session), but I do have plans for more contests. So, just stalk my blog and be ready to enter and win!
