Interview by Emily Carlyle.
Favor is a jewelry design and production studio founded by Monika Reed as a way to offer delicate, timeless, and sentimental jewelry, inspired by the shapes, stones, and metals found in the natural world.
Lets begin with the basics; tell me about your love for jewelry.
Well, Iâve always been pretty creative and jewelry is just something Iâve always done. I remember making bead bracelets when I was little, so I donât know where it actually started but Iâve always been interested in it and I worked in bead stores throughout high school and after that I worked with jewelry designers. Thatâs where I became really interested in the business aspect of it. I had never really thought about going into business for myself before that. I kept thinking that it was something that was really accessible. When I moved to Portland it was originally to go to school and the business was what I did on the side. Over time it grew and I had to make a choice. I chose Favor.
How did you decide to start your own business? Was it something you had always planned or did you have an âahaâ moment somewhere along the road?
It was sort of an âahaâ moment, not one exact moment but just working with the other designers, seeing what the process was and thinking, âthatâs what I want to doâ.
Sustainability and ethical business practices are something you are extremely passionate about, how big a part does this play in your business?
Definitely. I was studying cultural anthropology and I was really interested in the actually applied aspect of it, so looking at the big issue and then finding little things you can do to make everything just work better and to make people happier and just more fair towards everybody and everything. When I really started thinking about how it actually was applied to my life, ethical business just seemed really like the next step.
Does your commitment to following these guidelines make your job harder?
Yes. I mean, you do have to think about it a lot more and really analyze all the pieces. Every time I find a new supplier, I need to research them and ask all the necessary questions, so it does get more complicated. But, I can sleep better at night.
What is the hardest thing about owning your own business? Whatâs the most rewarding?
The hardest thing would be time management. I work at home, so itâs really difficult to separate my time. To have that feeling that you are home and relaxed doesnât really exist anymore. The best part would be owning the vision. I can really make sure that everything is how I want it to be and well, the buck stops here. So itâs just really fulfilling to see it fall into place the way you want it to.
Whatâs the biggest mistake that youâll never make again?
I really donât think there have been any yet. I have only been full time since April 2010, so I am relatively new. There have been setbacks but I think that I have been able to learn my lesson and just move on. I really try and focus on all the good parts! Optimism has been the cure.
When choosing jewelry for yourself, what do you look for?
I like it wearable and not fussy. It has to be something you can put on and kind of forget about but you know its still going to be there at the end of the day, like it wonât just slip off. I also really like clean and minimalist and I like things to feel good too, even just in your hand. I spent a lot of time just trying to find the right chain to use, I use the same chain in all of my designs and that just took forever. Some would feel too heavy, too light, and too bendable. I really just like the weight in your hand.
Have you ever had âdesigner’s blockâ? How do you overcome that?
Not yet! I keep a sketchbook going. I donât design as I go; I come up with a collection and then just edit it down. I will have like a week where I just design and make things. If I have any problems during that time I will just go back through all my sketches and get back on the right track.
Where do you pull inspiration from when you are having that period of design and creativity?
I really like just kind of balanced positive and negative space. So, I am drawn to shadows and handwriting. I read once that when men doodle they make really hard lines and corners, sharp shapes and when women doodle they are more soft and flowy, like spirals and things like that. Thatâs what I do. I translate those soft, spiral shapes into jewelry.
What is a valuable piece of advice that you were given that you think others should also receive?
To be optimistic! Betsy Cross, from Betsy & Iya told me once to âfloat on the good stuff, and let the bad stuff disappearâ. It has been excellent advice.
What does the future hold for you and Favor?
Well, I want to continue to expand wholesale accounts and I want to be all over North America and maybe even expand to Europe after that. In the short term, I am really looking forward to doing some trade shows and retail shows.

Interview by Ashley Kronick, CRAVE Portland
Sandy Varzarschi came to the U.S. from Kazakhstan in 1994. Just a few months ago she was a soon to be mom with a landscaping business, who enjoyed making scarves and baby clothes as a hobby. When she saw that a local Lake Oswego gallery was for sale, she jumped at the chance for a huge career change, and just four weeks later opened her very own boutique. Silkwood is a fabulous and inviting store that truly has something for everyone. Whether you are shopping for a youngster, a casual lunch, or a night out on the town, you will find what you are looking for at this modern and stylish shop. With clothes from across the country and brought in from Europe, Silkwood has a ton of fabulous merchandise to offer shoppers.
You opened just over two months ago. What made you decide this is what you wanted to do and have you always done something like this professionally?
What I did was totally different. I was outdoors working rain or shine, (in Oregon it was more rain than shine), doing landscaping. I love the outdoors, I love nature, I love plants, and I love the creative aspects of creating beautiful designs around a house. I was doing that for 7 years. Then when I got pregnant, I couldnât jump off the truck anymore. So, thatâs when I was looking for something else to do, because I had to do something. I started making little clothes for what I thought was a little girl, Vivienne. Then of course little Vince came along and I had all of these clothes, which I had of course gotten carried away with and had too much of.
Eventually, I went to LA in March with my samples to promote my line. Itâs fun to talk about. I actually stashed my samples in the back of my car and went shopping! I spent tons of money before I had the store! I came home with a car full of clothes and list of orders before I had the shop! It was very exciting. I bet people thought it was crazy. But, I got onto my landlord saying I need this place, you canât lease it to anyone else, I got to have it, and I have to have it by May. So, April 15th I signed the lease, then May 15th we opened.
What would you say inspires you most and keeps you motivated in this business?
You know what, itâs the feedback that I get from people. When I get that feedback 10-20 times a day, oh my god, I get so pumped, I get so motivated. When people call me and say I wore one of your pieces last night for a big meeting, and everyone loved it, and I felt great in it. Thatâs what it is.
I also have support. Neighbors from the business around here are great support. They want to see me succeed because we all represent the community.
Running a boutique like this is a lot of work and long hours, but when you do have free time, how do you spend it?
Oh as much time as I can spend with my baby is so important. I actually tried to bring him to the store. Not a good idea! He just started walking and puts everything in his mouth. Any minute I get I run home and grab him. We either stay home and play or go to the park.
What do you do when you get time to de-stress and relax? Do you have an indulgence during these times?
Going to a great restaurant and not worrying about washing dishes and cleaning up.
Thereâs not much time relax. In the back of my head, there is always the store. Somebody said âto avoid working from 9-5 you open your own business and end up working 24 hours a dayâ and thatâs true. It takes everything. You always think of something; something to add and something to change. Itâs actually not a stressful business for me though. Itâs something that I just found out I can do.

Knowing everything you know now, is there anything that you would do differently? Any advice you could give new business owners?
Have a passion for it, and a good location with the right customers is really important. I canât think of anything that I regret. There might be a few minor things I would change, but this is my second or third business so I try to be really careful and stick to what works in order to succeed.
What is your favorite thing about owning your own business?
Having no boss!
I know you attended the Up in the Air fashion show that we hosted recently with Mabel and Zora and Popina Swimwear. Is it important in your business to stay connected to the community in that way?
Oh yes and I would have even loved the opportunity to actually participate. Great boutiques took part in it and I wanted to be a part of it. In my head, while all the girls were coming out, I was dressing them in my clothes. It was a lot of fun.
You stress that you are environmentally conscious in terms of the products you sell. Why is this important to you?
If we could all do even a little bit, every one of us, a little bit to help clean up the mess that weâve left, itâs really important. Itâs also really good for your body. Itâs good for your body to wear something that wasnât made with chemicals. Especially for babies, itâs so important because their skin is so sensitive. All of my kidâs clothes here are organic.
You make an effort to bring in new and emerging local designers. Why was this something you felt was important to do with Silkwood?
Itâs all about community. Obviously they have to offer something, not just be mainstream. Whether itâs a fabric, an idea, or style, but itâs really important to support the community.
What would you say your most popular line is? Is this also your favorite?
My French line because of the uniqueness. People want to look unique. They want to have something special on, not something that just covers your body, but something that makes a statement. I have a favorite in every line.
Finally, what comes next for Silkwood?
I have great plans. Iâve already had people coming to shop here from Seattle. Maybe Iâll take it to Seattle one day when itâs established. Weâll see how it goes.

While the leaves are not yet falling, fall fashion is already calling! Here are the top 5 trends we are CRAVING to outfit our wardrobes in this season.
Neutral Outerwear
Talk about fashion and function, the neutral colored coat is all over the fall fashion scene this season! So whether you opt for a trench or a tunic, this look is great for the cool temperatures that come along with the shifting seasons, plus, it goes well with nearly every color! Pair it with jeans for a daytime look, or rock it with a nice dress for a more formal evening on the town. Probably the most versatile trend of the time, this piece of outerwear is well worth the investment. Visit Parallel Boutique for your own neutral piece.
Military Inspired Accents
Bold Buttons, chunky hardware and structured sleeves are all the rage for this pending season. These funky accents put a great twist on many of the timeless fall fashions. Mix and match military accents with softer and more romantic pieces for an edgy urban look. March on over to Narcisse 1015 SW Washington Street to find your own military-inspired piece.
Fur
Whether you opt for faux or the real deal, fur is the latest and greatest this season. Feeling bold? Try this look out as a vest. Want something a little more subdued? Add subtle hints of this look by piling on a scarf or a coat with fur accents. Either way, you will stay warm and fashion-forward. Find a furry addition for your wardrobe at Mink Boutique, located on 3418 SE Hawthorne.
Boots with Hardware
This seasonâs footwear is all about trading high-highs, for low-lows, which is great for the trendiest on-the-go Portland chick. You can look fashionable, without risking injury, in this seasonâs clunky boots. Think youâre ready to step into a pair of your own? Then visit Halo Shoes on 1425 NE Broadway Street.
Patterned Tights
A great way to lengthen the life of your summer wardrobe is to mix your looks with some cooler weather accessories. You can still work your favorite pair of shorts and even a trendy dress by pairing them with a pair of tights. You can personalize this trend by dressing for your taste. Whether you like a classic monotone, a vibrant color or a unique pattern this trend is easy to make your own, not to mention affordable! Step into Lille Boutique on 1007 E Burnside to find some of the sassier options of the season.

When we think of spring we think of pastels and floral prints, but those just seem a little too passĂ© and boring. What will you be wearing this spring to spice up your wardrobe? Here are some of the color trends that you wonât want to miss out on. Pick up a few bright accessories that are both trendy and timeless.
Turquoise – Weâre pretty sure this is on EVERYONEâS hot-list, along with other aqua-colored hues. This vibrant color turns every outfit up a notch, making you just exude that cool confident aura that will make you the center of attention. Splurge on a Jamie Joseph brightly colored stone ring. We love this Sea Blue Chalcedony Ring for a beautiful eye-catcher.
Light Pink – More specifically, champagnes and corals are two âlight pinksâ that wonât have you gagging on pastel and cotton candy. Champagne is the closest you can get to a nice neutral color while adding a little pop! And for coral, try some of Cara Lyndonâs hairpins, we recommend Coral Wheel . Whether your hair color is light or dark, this feminine flair will turn heads.
Yellow – In every shade and size. Add a dash here or there or a big bright bag to have everyone around you smiling. Evoking sunshine and happiness, everyone could stand to integrate this cheerful color into their wardrobe or even their home. Try a bright throw pillow to add to your living room, we like the yellow Gloria pillow from Henry Road. The great thing about throw pillows is, when spring is over, you can just throw them back into the closet until spring comes again!

Each January I make a slue of resolutions, and promptly talk myself out of completing the majority of them. However, this year, spurred on by too many Sex & the City marathons, I have resolved to make room for more elegant experiences in the upcoming year. Though my sparse selection of evening wear is threatening to dissuade me, my envy for the beautiful gowns, jeweled shoes, and cute clutches is giving me a steadfast resolve. Here are the three places I am starting my search for new eveningwear. See you there!
Bubble Boutique. Located in the Pearl District, Bubble Boutique is a go-to shop for the frocks that fashionistas crave. This elegant, Parisian-style boutique offers shoppers a unique, personalized experience, ensuring a successful end to often exhausting dress shopping. This bright, clean space is punctuated by chic details like sparkling chandeliers, inspiring displays, and a comfortable seating area for shopping companions. Many of Bubble Boutiqueâs items are supplied by exclusive labels such as Nellie Partow, Loeffler Randall, and Gerard Darel, and are the perfect little dresses for parties and fancier gatherings. Bubble Boutique is located in the Pearl District at 1100 NW Glisan.
Xtabay Vintage Clothing Boutique. As âvintageâ quickly became one of the most utilized words of 2009, it seems only fitting that Xtabay should make our list this week. The unique selection found in this shop is the product of Xtabayâs hard working proprietress, Liz Gross. Handpicked by Liz, the well-edited and quickly rotating merchandise ranges from rare â20âs finds, to full-skirted â50âs dress, to sexy â60âs minis and beyond. Xtabay is a great place to find wonderfully unique dresses and accompanying accessories, sure to make you the center of much envy and the receiver of more than a few inquiries. Xtabayâs blog is a great place to get a feel for their recent inventory and whatâs to come next. Stop in at 2515 SE Clinton St.
Cocoon Silk. Specializing in one hundred percent Cambodian silk, lace, and embroidery, Cocoon Silk has a wide selection of beautiful gowns cut and embellished by these luxurious fabrics. However, the shopâs main claim to fame is its impressive in-house tailoring, offering custom design and fitting services to shoppers in search of beautiful eveningwear, made to oneâs precise specifications. Stop in at either of the two locations (Nw 23rd & Pearl District) for a chance to design the dress of your dreams– or to pick up something unimagined but equally fabulous and fantastically fitting.

âTis the season for festive fĂȘtes, and I canât help but get excited for my annual holiday celebrations. However, each year I undoubtedly find myself standing panic-stricken inside my closet with just one hour to unearth something fabulous for the evening ahead, and not one suitable ensemble in sight. This year I am eliminating my usual wardrobe woes and am pledging to find Portlandâs best shops for holiday attire, appropriate for all occasions from work parties to cozy cocktails with the gals!
Mink Located at 3418 SE Hawthorne, Mink is well known for its extensive collection of party dresses year-round, catering to the needs of those shopping for both upscale outings and casual affairs. This seasonâs stock includes a large supply of Weston Wear, BCBG holiday dresses, pieces from Corey Lynn Calter, as well as many items for those looking to make better use of their attire investments. âWomen this year want something they can wear more than once, so weâve got a great selection of cross-over dresses for wintertimeâ says Austin, a manager at Mink. Perfect for glamming up with heels, or pairing with tights and boots, Minkâs dresses range from jersey to lux fabrics, and pair perfectly with their great selection of cropped cover-ups and jackets. Prices run between $110-198 for dresses, and the amazingly helpful staff canât be beat!
Mabel and Zora Nestled in the Pearl on NW 11th Ave., his beautiful boutique may be decked out in yellow, but it is anything but mellow….as a self proclaimed sanctuary of sequence and sparkles, Mabel and Zora prides itself on providing glitz and glam to the modern woman, while making nods to the retro glamour of Doris Day films. Beaded tops and sparkly dresses abound here, complemented by a great selection of separates, jeans, and jewelry. Mabel and Zora stocks, Trina Turk, Ella Moss, Kersh, Max & Cleo, Betsy & Iya jewelry, and many more. Prices range from $58-$300, and for a lady in search of shine and shimmer, Mabel and Zora is this winterâs wonderland.
The English Dept In my recurring dream of being invited to an exclusive party, picked up in a limo by a handsome date, and swept off to an evening of elegance and luxuryâŠI imagine I bough my dress at The English Dept. The owner, Elizabeth Dye, stocks her intimate boutique with many of her own designs and those of her favorite designers from around the world. Elizabethâs focus is bridal dresses, but she keeps the English Dept. well supplied with special occasion dresses so intricate, distinctive, and fashion-forward that it is impossible not to gape at her divine mind. Each item comes with a story of vintage fabrics and inspiration drawn from literature and centuries passed, and Elizabeth even invites shoppers to consult on pieces for their own special occasions. Be it a high-collared silk shrug or handmade dress, a piece purchased from The English Dept. will surely be a splurge but is also an investment in oneâs self-distinction. The English Dept. is located at 1124 SW Alder Street.

Formerly as the manager and buyer of the first official denim bars in Portland, she left the business to finally pursue her own passion. Emerging jewelry designer Katy Kippen of Grayling Jewelry talked to us over an intimidate sushi dinner in Northwest. We got the opportunity to look at samples of her collection and even received adorable gifts of our own! One thing’s for sure, Katy’s got an eye for design and knows what her customers’ wants and needs are. Not only that, years in retail has helped her get a sense of what businesses are looking for also when buying a line. We wish Katy success with her business and are happy she’ll be a part of our Holiday Cravings shopping party!
Katyâwhat is something someone would be surprised to know about you?
A lot of people didnât know I made jewelry! Iâve been doing it since I was 15 and have been trained and have taken independent studies in metalsmithing. I spent a long time investing in someoneâs business, and finally realized it was the time to pursue my passion and take it to the next level.
Can you share with us some of your current projects?
My main project right now is my bridal and bridesmaid jewelry collection, set to launch in early spring. Itâs hard to find jewelry proper for brides and bridesmaids. I take part in consulting and designing the perfect piece for their special day.
Also, I am working to build a shopping cart on my website!
What are your plans for Grayling presently? Where do you want to see it in the next year?
Iâm shooting for 10 wholesale accounts. Right now, I have six solid ones. But Iâm not just pushing a number, rather work for relationship driven accounts with my buyers.
How do you go about finding inspiration?
I find inspiration in unusual places. When I was naming my line, I was looking through paleontology books! My family is also a huge inspiration to me. My grandfather was a stonecutter and he and my grandmother were collectors of very odd and curious items. My father loves history, especially the Civil War era and carves very elaborate and beautiful gunstocks. My mother is a musician and also a painter. She has a positive and uplifting attitude and persona. Growing up in an artistic family has definitely contributed a huge part to my own creativity. I also have a very vivid long-term memory of spending my childhood overseas and traveling because my father was in the Air Force. Like I said, I’ve found inspiration in all sorts of strange and unusual places.
Tell us a little bit about your studio workspace.
I share my studio with John, a 67 year-old gold and platinum smith who is easy going and smart. I actually found him when I was looking to design my wedding ring. Itâs a great space with rolling mills and machinery, different ring sizers, custom presses and anvils, as well as standard casting equipment for gold and higher carat metal. Itâs difficult to use the machinery sometimes because I primarily work with sterling silver and brass, but whatever I need, itâs available to me at this studio.
Who would you love to see wearing your jewelry?
Seeing my mom put on my jewelry are some of the best moments in my life—she gets super excited and happy. I would love to see brides in my jewelry too. Also, Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family.
Who are some of your favorite Portland designers or boutiques?
Una, Hazel Cox, and Halo Shoes. Weâre very lucky in Portland to have all these great boutiques and designers.
How do you feel about the local fashion community in Portland?
There are some major personalities driving different things in the Portland fashion community. Independent designers hold fashion events their own unconventional way. Theyâre definitely more leader and less follower. Thatâs what makes Portland cool. I donât think itâs necessarily a good idea for everyone to come together, but rather about celebrating individuality and to help each other out, forming a sense of community instead.
What is your professional background?
Marketing management and lots of years of retail! I also work as a marketing consultant by helping develop marketing strategies for start-ups and small businesses.
What experiences did you take from retail at Nolita that has benefited you in your work now?
Now that Iâm on the wholesale side, I know what the key points are when buyers are looking to buy a jewelry line. Doesnât mean Iâm doing all of it yet, but I try to meet those needs. Knowing what theyâre going through takes a lot of guesswork out.
What are the advantages of being your own boss?
My laundry is more under control. Iâm still working as much as I was before, if not more, but Iâm putting my efforts towards a dynamic cause instead of a static cause. I wanted to try something new and thatâs the most exciting thing.
What challenges do you face introducing an exclusive jewelry collection into the market and how do you handle those challenges?
I am quick to disassemble and move on, or scratch an idea that doesnât seem to work. Good thing I come up with many more new ideas all the time! I realize that if the style isnât booking, I didnât have to pay someone to make a sample because I made it myself. There are challenges but Iâm dealing with them the best that I can. Jewelry is a lot different than clothing. Itâs not as seasonal as clothing but just as trend driven. I try to stay on top of that and address the needs of different customers by keeping an assortment of lines while trying not to saturate and get too diverse.
Where can we find your jewelry in Portland?
Iâve created a capsule line for Relish, an 11-piece collection just for that boutique because weâve established a great relationship together since the beginning. Pin Me Apparel, Lille Boutique, SOLE (they have the biggest assortment of the Glamrock collection), PDX Boutique, and Parts & Labour will have things for the holiday.
Any last words, Katy?
Iâm excited to be part of the Holiday Cravings party! One thing I miss about being in retail is the interaction with customers and knowing who buys your products. Itâll be nice to have face-to-face interaction with customers at the CRAVE holiday shopping party.
Also, Portland is a great place to live and do businessâit takes putting your money where your mouth is. But the beautiful thing is that Portland feels like a community, so use that for all its worth.
