Interview with Entrepreness Sandy Varzarschi of Silkwood Boutique

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Interview by Ashley Kronick, CRAVE Portland

Sandy Varzarschi came to the U.S. from Kazakhstan in 1994. Just a few months ago she was a soon to be mom with a landscaping business, who enjoyed making scarves and baby clothes as a hobby. When she saw that a local Lake Oswego gallery was for sale, she jumped at the chance for a huge career change, and just four weeks later opened her very own boutique. Silkwood is a fabulous and inviting store that truly has something for everyone. Whether you are shopping for a youngster, a casual lunch, or a night out on the town, you will find what you are looking for at this modern and stylish shop. With clothes from across the country and brought in from Europe, Silkwood has a ton of fabulous merchandise to offer shoppers.

You opened just over two months ago. What made you decide this is what you wanted to do and have you always done something like this professionally?
What I did was totally different. I was outdoors working rain or shine, (in Oregon it was more rain than shine), doing landscaping. I love the outdoors, I love nature, I love plants, and I love the creative aspects of creating beautiful designs around a house. I was doing that for 7 years. Then when I got pregnant, I couldn’t jump off the truck anymore. So, that’s when I was looking for something else to do, because I had to do something. I started making little clothes for what I thought was a little girl, Vivienne. Then of course little Vince came along and I had all of these clothes, which I had of course gotten carried away with and had too much of.

Eventually, I went to LA in March with my samples to promote my line. It’s fun to talk about. I actually stashed my samples in the back of my car and went shopping! I spent tons of money before I had the store! I came home with a car full of clothes and list of orders before I had the shop! It was very exciting. I bet people thought it was crazy. But, I got onto my landlord saying I need this place, you can’t lease it to anyone else, I got to have it, and I have to have it by May. So, April 15th I signed the lease, then May 15th we opened.

What would you say inspires you most and keeps you motivated in this business?
You know what, it’s the feedback that I get from people. When I get that feedback 10-20 times a day, oh my god, I get so pumped, I get so motivated. When people call me and say I wore one of your pieces last night for a big meeting, and everyone loved it, and I felt great in it. That’s what it is.

I also have support. Neighbors from the business around here are great support. They want to see me succeed because we all represent the community.

Running a boutique like this is a lot of work and long hours, but when you do have free time, how do you spend it?
Oh as much time as I can spend with my baby is so important. I actually tried to bring him to the store. Not a good idea! He just started walking and puts everything in his mouth. Any minute I get I run home and grab him. We either stay home and play or go to the park.

What do you do when you get time to de-stress and relax? Do you have an indulgence during these times?
Going to a great restaurant and not worrying about washing dishes and cleaning up.
There’s not much time relax. In the back of my head, there is always the store. Somebody said “to avoid working from 9-5 you open your own business and end up working 24 hours a day” and that’s true. It takes everything. You always think of something; something to add and something to change. It’s actually not a stressful business for me though. It’s something that I just found out I can do.

Knowing everything you know now, is there anything that you would do differently? Any advice you could give new business owners?
Have a passion for it, and a good location with the right customers is really important. I can’t think of anything that I regret. There might be a few minor things I would change, but this is my second or third business so I try to be really careful and stick to what works in order to succeed.

What is your favorite thing about owning your own business?
Having no boss!

I know you attended the Up in the Air fashion show that we hosted recently with Mabel and Zora and Popina Swimwear. Is it important in your business to stay connected to the community in that way?
Oh yes and I would have even loved the opportunity to actually participate. Great boutiques took part in it and I wanted to be a part of it. In my head, while all the girls were coming out, I was dressing them in my clothes. It was a lot of fun.

You stress that you are environmentally conscious in terms of the products you sell. Why is this important to you?
If we could all do even a little bit, every one of us, a little bit to help clean up the mess that we’ve left, it’s really important. It’s also really good for your body. It’s good for your body to wear something that wasn’t made with chemicals. Especially for babies, it’s so important because their skin is so sensitive. All of my kid’s clothes here are organic.

You make an effort to bring in new and emerging local designers. Why was this something you felt was important to do with Silkwood?
It’s all about community. Obviously they have to offer something, not just be mainstream. Whether it’s a fabric, an idea, or style, but it’s really important to support the community.

What would you say your most popular line is? Is this also your favorite?
My French line because of the uniqueness. People want to look unique. They want to have something special on, not something that just covers your body, but something that makes a statement. I have a favorite in every line.

Finally, what comes next for Silkwood?
I have great plans. I’ve already had people coming to shop here from Seattle. Maybe I’ll take it to Seattle one day when it’s established. We’ll see how it goes.

Interview with Entrepreness Kim Sibley of Little Urbanites

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Kim Sibley is an influential person in your community and in your business but you may not even realize it until now! Not only is Kim the proud owner of Little Urbanites, a wonderfully curated children’s store in Portland’s Pearl District, she also sits on several neighborhood associations planning and implementing ways to improve our neighborhoods and business districts in Portland. With a degree in Early Childhood Education & Fine Art and seven years of experience working for a children’s museum as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Kim brings her expertise, knowledge as well as energy to Little Urbanites. Offering a unique selection of safe, worldly, and quality products, Kim provides exceptional customer service and gives expert advice for families in Portland and across the nation. Kim set aside some time for me to interview her for our CRAVE Portland Entrepreness feature and it was so much fun getting to know more about her and her business.

Tell me a little about yourself.
I grew up in New York and New Jersey and have traveled 48 out of the 50 states in the U.S.–I’ve lived everywhere too. My background is in art, and I worked at Metropolitan Museum of Art. I’m passionate about education and developing the business districts in Portland. I’m also VP of the Pearl District Business Association (PDBA), on the board for Alliance of Portland Neighborhood Business Associaion (APNBA) as well as a mentor for Mentor Portland. I also love to garden and volunteer!

What aspects of the business do you handle most?
I do all the buying for the store, merchandising, I handle marketing and public relations, web design and maintenance, and I also do sales on the weekends. I oversee all other aspects of the business, but for example financials–that’s not me, I have someone else taking care of the numbers, that’s boring to me!

What’s the significance of the name “Little Urbanites”?
My mom, Suzanne owned a kids’ store in New Jersey and I actually give her all the credit for coming up with the name. We knew that we wanted to have the business in the Pearl District, and so our customers would be city dwellers and their children would be growing up in the city.

What’s your criteria for buying for your store?
I always ask where it’s made and whose making it. In addition to uniqueness, I try to choose products that are safe, environmentally friendly and socially response. I feel that I can make an impact by making responsible choices.

What are some of the most popular products that you carry?
The Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair — “the chair that grows with your child.” It was made in the 1970′s by a dad and is actually in Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) cafe! Baby registry, strollers and stroller advice are also popular products and services. i spend hours and days helping customers find the right stroller!

In addition to your retail store, you also have your online store www.littleurbanites.com. What are the pros & cons of having both entities?
The retail store is fun, interactive, and you get to meet your customers but it also has to be open all days of the week. I really love doing social media online and working on relaunching our blog! The downside of online is the maintenance of everything!

Besides being your own boss, what’s the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?
I get a feeling of personal achievement, that you built something from the ground up and it’s become something successful. I also curate the store and go through a very in-depth selection process and research to make sure that each and every one of my products in the store has a purpose and makes a statement. That’s rewarding to me!

What do you do to maintain a balance in your life?
Balance is very difficult to achieve! I try to take at least one day off a week, garden or spend time traveling. I don’t have any children yet but Little Urbanites IS my baby and that’s where most of my focus is right now.

Do you have plans for the future of Little Urbanites?
We’ve had our online store for two years now and it’s been doing pretty well, but I’d love to grow it even more. I’d also like to open up in other locations in the future.

Any last words for our readers?
Connect with us on Facebook or Twitter! Those are both ways I’m able to connect and interact with fans and customers. I would also love your feedback on how we’re doing and what products you like!

Planning a Fun in the Sun Picnic

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Food always seems to taste better when enjoyed outdoors and in the company of great friends and family. So, pack your picnic basket, grab a blanket, bring some companions, and take advantage of the sunny warm weather the spring and summer months have to offer with an al fresco dining experience! Don’t sweat, planning a picnic doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some fun and fuss-free ideas for planning a picnic in the fresh air and sunshine!

1. Pick a Location:

  • At the Park: Whether you’re on a grassy spot in the sunlight or under the shade of a tree, a park is the perfect place to gather for a picnic! If you’re feeling guilty about leaving your beloved pooch at home, there are plenty of pet-friendly parks so you can bring Fido along!
  • On a Beach: Sun, surf, and sand is the ideal combination for a picnic on the beach! Just make sure you enjoy each element separately to avoid melted, soggy, or grainy grub.
  • At a Drive-In Movie: CRAVing a romantic night with your sweetie? Dinner and a movie underneath a blanket of twinkling nighttime stars is a perfect date night combination. Don’t forget to bring popcorn and candy!
  • In Your Backyard: Want to enjoy a meal outside but don’t feel like hauling a basket or cooler full of food around? No problem, a picnic in your backyard can be just as fun and probably less stressful if you happen to forget the napkins!
  • On a Roof-top Patio: For those of you dwelling in the concrete jungle, many apartment and condo buildings have a roof-top patio for their residents to enjoy. The only difference? Rather than being surrounded by trees, you have adjacent skyscrapers to provide shade.

2. Picnic Menu Items:

We encourage you to be creative, but to also keep things simple with your picnic menu! Remember, you have to schlep these baskets around with limited heating or cooling available, and food poisoning is never included in the recipe for fun. Pack your picnic baskets with these simple palate pleasers, bon appetit!

  • Savor: Definitely use your left-overs when you can! Roasted chicken can be used to make a yummy pasta or Caesar salad. You can also make some simple PB&J or turkey sandwiches the night before and refrigerate them until you’re ready to head out. Soft bagels with cream cheese are also a great and effortless menu option. Here are some other easy picnic recipes to consider.
  • Sip: Class up your picnic with a bottle of wine to sip while you savor your meal, which is ideal if you’re enjoying a laid-back picnic on your backyard porch. For public parks and beaches, we recommend some bubbly and refreshing sparkling apple cider instead. Lemonade is also the classic beverage of choice for a sunny spring/summer picnic.
  • Sweets: You can’t go wrong with brownies and cookies, which are crowd-pleasers for any age. A fresh fruit salad is delicious and nutritious, and also surprisingly portable! We generally don’t recommend packing anything that melts quickly, but if you’re having a backyard picnic you can get away with serving ice cream and popsicles!

3. Picnic Essentials NOT to Forget:

  • Sunscreen/sun block: Don’t ruin your outdoor picnic with a painful sunburn, keep yourself sun protected! As the people from the land down under would say, “Slip, Slop, Slap: slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat.”
  • Insect repellant: A good idea if you’re going to be outdoors long enough for the mosquitoes to come out for their own picnic.
  • Big quilt/blanket: If you’re going to be dining on the grass, sit on a big quilt or blanket to protect yourself from ants in your pants, or even worse, in your food!
  • Eating utensils: Finger food is always fun, but if you plan on serving something that requires a fork, spoon, or knife, eating with your bare hands will get messy and complicated.
  • Plastic bag(s): Be considerate of others and the park in which you are enjoying your picnic and clean up any trash or food waste. Also, if your pooch joined you for your picnic, please pick up behind your pawed pal as well.
  • Anti-bacterial hand gel/wipes: Ahh, germs! Need we say more?
  • Entertainment: Don’t dine and dash, stay a while! Bring some playing cards, a Frisbee, or play bocce ball while your tummies digest.

Interview with Jessica Davis of NW Kids Magazine

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Jessica Davis

Jessica Davis is the owner of NW Kids Magazine and nwkids.com, a resource guide for local parents and caregivers to find family-friendly events and kid activities in the Portland, Oregon metro area. Jessica believes that time spent with your kids should also be fun for parents as well. Since taking over the publication in 2007, Jessica has worked to transform NW Kids into a hip, modern parenting guide that’s all about Portland. With a background in media, her career path has taken her from CNN, to Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, Forbes, Inc. and now back in her native hometown with NW Kids.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up in Portland and I love it here, it’s a wonderful place to live. I have two small kids and I’m the owner of the media magazine publication NW Kids!

When you took over NW Kids in 2007, what were your objectives for the publication and how were you going to achieve them?
When I first took over the magazine there had been little content and hardly any design work in the magazine. This of course, has changed. My ongoing objective is to make NW Kids about parenting lifestyle, but not in the voice of an authority on parenthood. Instead, we look to provide fun, guilt-free information on parenting and activities for the entire family to enjoy.

Who is your ideal audience?
Parents and caregivers who look to find activities that are engaging for everyone in the family. Parents don’t have to be “martyrs” and do things just for the kids—they can also enjoy themselves while spending time with their little ones.

In your past career as a newsroom journalist for CNN, what was it like covering assassinations, bombings, airplane crashes, politics … and then switching over to a family-friendly publication?
My time at CNN was very high energy and high stress, there were a lot of unexpected things that were thrown at you and you’d have to cover it whenever it occurred. I was able to do it then, but I knew I couldn’t live with that news cycle forever while raising a family. With NW Kids, it is still high energy and I put in a lot of hours, but at least I know what to expect most of the time.

What were you able to take from your experiences working for such large media establishments and was able to apply to your current position?
At Forbes, everyone is really creative and there are a lot of reknown artists and designers who create amazing work. Knowing ways design can be used and working with designers are things I took from Forbes and have been useful in my work now.

If there’s one thing that would make NW Kids better, what would it be?
I see potential in web and the site’s navigation that will allow for more ways to engage our readers.

Where do you see NW kids 10 years from now?
We’ll always have new readers because there will always be new moms and new babies. But kids get older and we also want to grow with them, so we’d like to reach out to a broader range of readers. I want NW Kids to be the go-to resource for all parents at all stages of their child’s growth.

Can you share with us any memories of how you spent your childhood?
I grew up in Portland going to OMSI, the Oregon Zoo, local theaters, and reading a lot. These are all the things I’ve been able to share with my own children now. I remember Beverly Cleary, the author of the Ramona books that I read growing up. It was so exciting knowing she’s from Oregon and reading her books and having my kids read her works too.

What are your favorite activities and ways to spend time with your family?
We do a lot—we go to bouncy play houses if the kids need to release some energy, we spend time at community indoor swimming pools (great during the winter), we attend concerts together … there’s always so much to do!

What skills or traits do you feel are necessary to manage your own business?
Soft skills are very important if you have others working for you. I also believe that it’s important to know your limitations and know what your core competencies are—make sure you only bite off what you can handle.

How many copies of NW kids are distributed every month?
We distribute approximately 16-20,000 copies every month in Portland and five different counties. It is also offered online and available for download. We receive 4-5,000 views online per monthly issue.

We’re excited to have you as a premier sponsor for our Holiday Cravings shopping party on December 9th. Do you have any thoughts on the upcoming event?
CRAVE parties are one of my favorite events. It’s not just shopping, but shopping locally and supporting local brands and cute shops. And they always evoke such a fun and vibrant atmosphere!

CRAVE Portland & American Cancer Society “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

CRAVE Portland is proud to announce that American Cancer SocietyMaking Strides Against Breast Cancer” is the charity we’ve chosen to benefit at our December 9th Holiday Cravings Shopping Party! We spoke to Gretchen Rosenberger and Amy Theberge from the American Cancer Society last week and are happy to have them and their organization as part of our holiday festivities!

MSABC is the premier campaign to help fundraise dollars for breast cancer research and to fund grants for awareness programs among other things. Although “fundraising isn’t all we do, all we do depends on it.” This is your opportunity to join your community to educate women, raise money to fund lifesaving research, and to celebrate breast cancer survivors. “At these events, breast cancer survivors are like celebrities on the red carpet at the Oscars,” states Amy, a community relationship manager at ACS. Last year there were more than 4,000 walkers who raised $170,000 for the charity. We encourage everyone to join the campaign and walk on May 8, 2010, create a team, and donate.

In 2009, it’s estimated that 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women. Of that, there will be 40,170 deaths. The chances of women being diagnosed with breast cancer is 1 in 8 (12.1%). With this daunting statistic, we asked Gretchen and Amy several questions about how women can lower their risks of getting breast cancer, and if it is detected, what resources are available for them to get support.

What are some preventative health strategies to reduce known risk factors?
At least 60 minutes of exercise a day, a diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables that are packed with vitamins and nutrients, limit alcohol consumption, and definitely smoking. Smoking increases your risk not only for breast cancer but all other types of cancers.

How can one’s lifestyle affect their chances of getting breast cancer?
Although age is the most important risk factor for breast cancer, it’s important to be aware of breast cancer early on in the teen years and to learn how to develop a healthy lifestyle. You can’t change your lifestyle overnight when you reach 40 and start taking preventative measures against breast cancer. By then, it may be too late.

How can breast cancer be detected early?
First, understand that a person should not fully rely on self-examinations alone. Although you may know your body well, physicians may have a better understand of knowing what to look for. We recommend getting screenings yearly and begin getting mammograms when a woman reaches 40.

Where can someone go for patient information and support?
We have MANY outreach groups, of them, our patient services is the most visible. Help and information is available around the clock by calling ACS at 1-800-227-2345. There’s also Look Good .. Feel Better, Reach for Recovery, YourShoes, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. You can check out Cancer.org for additional resources.

The American Cancer Society‘s (ACS) primary goals are to celebrate cancer survivors, raise awareness about early detection and prevention, and help put an end to the disease through research and development–to find cures. ACS is one of the best known and most respected health charities and has fundraised more than $3.4 billion dollars since 1946, making them the “largest contributor to cancer research behind the U.S. government.” They also invest more in breast cancer research than any other cancer type, and “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” is the campaign founded for this cause.

There will also be opportunities for you to get involved with MSABC at our Holiday Cravings party on December 9th. For more photos and information, click here.

Interview with The Proprietress: Kate Logan Fulford

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

kate

The Proprietress is Kate Logan Fulford. A former boutique-owner turned business consultant, her blog (TheProprietress.com) and e-guide help current and aspiring business owners alike pursue their dreams of running a successful boutique. Whether you need inspiration, suggestions, or resources, The Proprietress shares her experience and wealth of knowledge to assist you in creating extraordinary shopping experiences for your current and future clients!

What was the most rewarding aspect of having your own business, Ooma in San Francisco?
I went from managing projects of others’ as a project manager in a previous career path to having the authority to manage my own projects and allow myself to express my creativity through these projects.

When did you realize you wanted to start TheProprietress.com?
Even before my son, Oscar was born I knew I had to put things on hold to care for him and the family. When Oscar got a little older I found it was the right time to start doing something for myself again. I began to write my e-book (“The Proprietress: Your Guide to Opening a Chic Boutique”) and started TheProprietress.com as a way to promote my book and share my expertise.

What are some of the questions and concerns current boutique owners ask you to help them with?
A lot of people approached me while I owned Ooma and wanted to get together to chat about what it takes to open up a boutique. Many people have the perception that it’s “difficult”, but in actuality it’s very do-able. It takes a lot of guts, you’ll probably have to quit your job, and it’s risky, but it’s well worth it. TheProprietress.com isn’t so much about me answering questions of others, but rather answering questions I once had asked before, or addressing topics and themes that others may benefit from.

Can you list a few key elements a successful boutique should have?
I believe the #1 element is a WARM WELCOME! Treat your customers like guests in your home. Have everything they may need, engage them, take care of them and make them feel comfortable. STAYING CONNECTED is #2 on my list. Whether through a card in the mail, a quick phone call, a newsletter or blog post, stay in touch with your customers and let them know you’re there and have something they might like.

What about a successful boutique owner? What traits should they possess?
Enthusiasm, optimism, and don’t take things personally. All the technical things can be learned, but when things are difficult, many boutique owners start to feel scared. Their sadness and deflated attitude will get in the way of them doing the right thing for their business. And understand that if people aren’t shopping a lot right now, it doesn’t mean that it’s your fault or because they don’t like your store. Stay optimistic, know that things will pick up, and keep on offering only the best for your customers.

Something people would be surprised to know about Kate is …
I used to be a back up dancer for a band called Super Diamonds in San Francisco! They were a Neil Diamond cover band and I was their costume consultant.

Do you have plans to open a boutique in Portland?
I plan on opening a stationary store!
