CRAVE up your St. Patrick’s Day

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

St. Patrick’s Day
is tomorrow and whether you are of Irish heritage or not, it is a great excuse to dress up in green, drink Guinness and eat corned beef and cabbage. In case the traditional Irish feast isn’t your thing we have come up with a few cool ways that you can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your girlfriends. So grab your green, your “Kiss Me I’m Irish” sticker and a few gal pals and celebrate with us! Erin Go Bragh!

Coordinate a cocktail party with you gal pals using this fabulous party guide from Girlfriend Celebrations. Get cocktail creative with green drinks that aren’t beer. Pair these with fabulous green snacks and appetizers. Finish off the Irish ambiance by playing Celtic music in the background. As a fun party activity everyone can plant individual clovers and each guest can take home a pot to remind them of their fabulous friends.

Not into food and games? Coordinate a gift exchange with girlfriends and require that everyone purchase something that is authentically Irish. Set a spending limit so everyone gets something fun.

This year the holiday is celebrated on a Wednesday so if you aren’t in to going out and partying hard consider spending a night in watching movies. Use food coloring to dye your popcorn green and pop in a Irish “chick-flick” like PS I Love You, Tristan and Isolde , or Leap Year. All St. Patrick’s Day rules still apply so make sure your PJ’s are green!

If you want to go all out and spend the night on the town check out this fabulous St. Patrick’s Day event guide and find out what fun St. Patty’s festivities are happening in your area.

We wish you the “luck o’ the Irish” this year as you celebrate with friends. And no matter where or how you celebrate remember the old Irish adage “Before you call for one for the road be sure you know the road.” Slàinte

Interview with Kerry of Holiday Golightly

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Holiday Golightly is your ultimate Girlfriend Getaway resource. We take the research and planning out of your busy hands – and book fantastically unique getaway trips that match your groups’ interests and style. Arrive armed with your Getaway Guide of insiders’ tips to your destination and head out to your cooking class, wine tour or yoga/surf camp. You deserve it!

How would you describe your business in  three words or less?
Guaranteed great getaway

What are the most popular or best selling products or services?.
Our most recent customers enjoyed a week-long trip through Tuscany and Umbria – complete with a truffle hunt, cooking class and an intimate dinner with wine pairings prepared and explained by a local celebrity chef.

People may be surprised to know that…
Sadly, only 24% of US women have taken a Girlfriend Getaway trip in the last three years – even though women acknowledge that such getaways make them feel “more self-confident, adventurous and relaxed”. Of those who do take the trips, a full 95% recognize that taking future girlfriend getaways are as or more important than ever. C’mon ladies- take care of yourselves and take a getaway!

What was the inspiration or motivation behind starting your business?
A friend told me she and her sisters had “the time, money and the inclination” to take a girls’ trip together, but they just never got organized and did it – whereas I could “write a book on the topic”. Having that very day coordinated a girls’ weekend to Portland and booked a villa in Italy for an upcoming group trip, I realized I really could create a business doing what I was already doing for fun… and help women take those much-needed trips that so many women neglect to do for themselves. And as we grow, I intend for the company to provide support to woman-focused non-profits – both financially and through social enterprise themed getaways.

Who is your role model or mentor?
Every day, I am increasingly impressed with the community of entrepreneurs around me who have turned their ideas into successful profitable companies. I feel lucky to belong to several local groups (NWEN, Ladies Who Launch, Women Business Owners) where I can learn from others who have succeeded – and receive the support and inspiration to do the same with Holiday Golightly.

What mistake have you made in your business that you will not repeat?
As a really early-stage start-up, I’m not sure we know what mistakes we’re making yet. What I am sure of is that we’re making some. I hope we have the presence to admit them, adjust and learn from them!

How do you spend your free time? What is your indulgence?
Not surprisingly, I love to travel and spend time with my friends. I will give up new clothes or shoes for a plane ticket and a few free days to go explore somewhere new (or indulge in somewhere known and beloved). (But truth be told, I’m also a sucker for fabulous handbags…and deep tissue massages).

What is your favorite place to go with your girlfriends?
We love to try new places and lately have been enjoying a tour of the new wine bars opening up around Seattle. Anywhere there’s an excuse to put on our fancy shoes… (Ok, admittedly we do that even at the dive bars).

Favorites and Why?
Best place to get a pedicure?
Frenchie’s – because they have the flutes ready for that champagne bottle you and your girlfriends just brought in.

Best place to get a manicure?
Somewhere with hot paraffin wax – my place stopped doing it but I hear the Spaahh at Hotel 1000 is doing this – and how can you not love the name? I’m relaxed already.

Best place to find gifts?
A stroll through Ballard – between local artists’ productions at Venue, quirky products at Duque and all the fun home accessory and clothing stores, there’s something for everyone.

Favorite salon?
Tamara Hamry at Aria Salon in Cap Hill – I’ve referred about 5 women there and for all of us… “best haircut ever”.

Best place to buy shoes?
DSW, baby! (The one in Factoria) Who can resist a great pair of Stuart Weitzman pumps marked down to $30?! And with the sizes marked right there on the boxes, you can quickly scan the aisles and walk out with a whole season’s worth of shoes on your lunch break!

Best place to buy clothes?
I’m partial to independent boutiques in new cities when I’m traveling. I love wearing a piece and remembering where I was and what we did on the trip when I bought it.

Best gym, fitness club?
Zum. Nothing hurts more than the day after a “Hard Core” class if you’ve made the mistake of going on vacation. But that’s how you know it’s working, right? All the staff at this intimate gym know everyone… and what they’re doing. Trainers and classes are great – and the gym even has style!

Best Places to Find Inner Peace

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

“Breath in, breath out…” “Count to ten and take a deep breath. Sometimes these age old mantras aren’t enough to get you through the stressful moments at work and in life. It’s not abnormal to break down when the pressures of life and work get the most of you, it happens to the best of us. Even the fabulous Jessie Spano on Saved By the Bell broke down when the drama of Bayside High got to be too much.

To keep the pressure at a minimum and avoid a “Jessie Spano Freakout”  it is important to practice “self love” on a regular basis. To help assist you in practice of “self love” we have compiled a list of Best Places to Find Inner Peace and “detox”.

  • The Inn at Langley – take a stroll out on one of the decks and enjoy the beautiful view!
  • Banya 5 – an urban spa and health facility which offers a unique blend of old world wellness rituals in a friendly contemporary environment
  • Urban Yoga Spa – your support and sanctuary; a place to release your stress and what doesn’t belong, a place to clear your head and simply work on you and whatever you want to accomplish with your life!
  • Seattle Insight Meditation Society (SIMS) – try an Introductory Meditation Class w/ Rodney
  • The Wild Pacific Coast Trail - located on Vancouver Island this seven phase trail system skirts the rugged cliffs and shoreline of the beautiful island.
  • Seattle Parks and Recreation – we are very lucky to live in a place with such a gorgeous and amazing landscape the is easily accessible through one of our many city parks and trails. Grab a buddy and hit the trails or a blanket, a coffee and a good book and snuggle up in one of the parks.
  • Clear Awakening Massage - treat yourself to a relaxing massage and feel your worries melt away.

Sometimes simply walking around and enjoying the sites and sounds of nature is all it takes to “detox” your life and get you back to a relaxing state of inner peace. Namaste.

Interview with Christy and Sarah of Coastal Surf Boutique

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Coastal is a Seattle Boardsports Boutique that carries lifestyle apparel, accessories, swimwear and sandals from brands like Roxy, Billabong, Hurley, Reef and more. What started in 2003 with 400 square feet of women’s clothing has grown to a larger store on Alki Beach that now offers the lifestyle to men and kids. Owners Christy Pudduck and Sarah Steere strive to make Coastal a fun and comfortable place to shop, where you can find new styles or just hang out!

How would you describe your business in three words or less?
Fun, Friendly, Fashion!

What are the most popular or best selling products or services?

Reef Sandals, Swimsuits and Casual Industrees tees.

People may be surprised to know that…

In addition to our women’s and men’s clothes, we now have an adorable kids section!

What was the inspiration or motivation behind starting your business?
We wanted to create a place where people could find the cute clothes and lifestyle of the boardsports industry (snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding) without an intimidating environment. We also knew we both wanted to have careers that supported a hands-on family balance, and we think we’ve found that with Coastal.

Who is your role model or mentor?

Any woman or mother who takes on raising a family and running a business at the same time!

What mistake have you made in your business that you will not repeat?

Overbuying! It’s hard with such cute clothes to choose from, but having too much inventory is a recipe for retail disaster! We learned that the hard way…once.

How do you spend your free time? What is your indulgence?
Sarah: Besides going to the Zoo with my daughter, I like to check out new boutiques around Seattle when I have time to browse.  There are so many great hidden spots out there!
Christy: Being outside! Seattle has great parks and green spaces we love to frequent, I love spending time working in my yard and garden, and of course hanging out with my family!

What is your favorite place to go with your girlfriends?
Sarah: The movies, or just out on the town to enjoy the good company.
Christy: Tapas bars with great drinks, or just on good long walks with a cup of coffee.

Favorites and Why?

Best place to get a pedicure?
Christy: Frenchy’s in Madison. Love the Parafin dip. And selling sandals all summer, our feet need to look good!
Sarah: Elegant Nails in West Seattle.  They are so friendly and can always get you in for a pedicure!

Best place to get a manicure?
Christy: Julep. Though with kids and work, manicures aren’t the most practical indulgence in our lives anymore!

Favorite Salon?
C & S: Elliot Salon on Alki.  It’s quaint, stylish and we always walk out happy.

Best place to buy shoes?
Christy: Edie’s on Capitol Hill
Sarah: Clementine in West Seattle.  I love the sale they have at the West Seattle Street Fair!

Best place to buy clothes?
Christy: It’s ridiculous and seems self-interested, but I love shopping at Coastal as a shopper. I think when I stop shopping there I’ll know we’re not doing it right anymore!
Sarah: I’m going to have to concur with Christy on that one

Best local designer?

Christy: Suzabelle – I discovered her at a CRAVE party and am such a fan of her coats!

Best gym or fitness club?

Christy: The Promenade on Alki…running or walking outside along the water is better than any gym, especially in the Summer!
Sarah: Alki is the best spot to work out.  Greenlake is my 2nd favorite running path.

Interview with Alicia Olsen and Kathy Perkins from Paper Delights

Friday, February 19th, 2010

For Kathy Perkins and her daughter, Alicia Olsen, Paper Delights has been a dream come true. They thought of the idea one warm summer night over a bottle of wine, and when they woke up the next morning they still thought it was a good idea.  From that moment on they started dreaming about it, and six months later they opened our doors. Be Fearless with You Finances: Meet the Speakers Carrie and Denise

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Denise and Carrie will be joining us as the speakers at Sunday’s CRAVEchat “Be Fearless With Your Finances.” Learn more about where they come from and what they will be sharing on Sunday!

Denise Marinacci of Flaunt! Inc. says:
Why does Flaunt! focus on QuickBooks and women?
Simply because almost half of all small businesses in the US are owned by women and they need help.

Flaunt!
teaches women business owners, like you, who may not like QuickBooks to fall in love with what it can do for your business. For example, track your vendors to take available discounts;  find the top selling products and add more to the mix;  know your bank balance before you write that next check.

If you’re struggling in your business join me at the CraveChat on February 21st from 2 – 4 pm. In 2010 you too can become a
Business Wonder Women….Smart, Savvy, and Successful!

Carrie Middlemiss of Bella Cupcake Couture says:
I’m very excited to participate on the panel of speakers at the upcoming CRAVE Chat. The theme of the event is “Fearless with your Finances”.

This is a very familiar topic for me as a business owner and from my previous career working for a bank for almost 18 years. I started with the bank right out of high school and worked my way up in the financial industry. From a Teller to Account Representative selling mutual funds to a Marketing Coordinator and finally as a VP Division Marketing Manager. During my role at the bank I managed budgets up to 4 million+ and executed over 1,000 events.

Now after a layoff, I’ve turned a “Pink Slip into Pink Frosting”. I created a unique product for cupcakes; Bella Cupcake Couture a chic textile-inspired cupcake wrapper. Our wrappers hide the crinkly, translucent cupcake liner they are baked in and add a touch of elegance to any special event.

Having my own business now, I quickly learned to do more with less. Here are a few tips I’ve learned along the way:

Marketing and PR: I started my company, Bella Cupcake Couture last March 2009 and have had some amazing press including the Seattle Times, Gourmet News, Kitchenware News and my all time favorite being selected as a Martha Stewart “Doer of the Week”. Many people have asked how I’ve done it? I often respond with “We have been very lucky” but in many cases it is a simple belief that “People reach out to people who reach out”. I heard this once from a wonderful speaker at a seminar and have made it my mantra. If I feel someone may be interested in my product or story I simply pick up the phone or shoot off an email. I don’t always get a response but feel it is worth a try.

Website and Social Media: It is important to have an inviting and easy to use website. It is the first introduction to your brand. And it doesn’t have to be expensive. There are several stylish and affordable options with web designer templates. Another way to create a buzz and drive traffic to your site is interacting with your audience. I have found the use of Facebook, Blogging  and Twitter a great (and very fun) way to communicate updates and have conversations directly with people who enjoy your product (and cupcakes).

Photography: A majority of my customers find my product online. Therefore, I knew the importance of making an impact with my photos. I didn’t know if I could afford a good photographer so my husband ended up surprising me with my own counter top photo studio in a box. It included all the lighting, mini tri-pod, etc. I learned how to set up the lighting, created elegant and simple displays and learned few tips on how to use photoshop and voilà… I became my own photographer. I can now set up my own photo shoots when ever I need to. I still need professional photos now and then and it has always been well worth the investment.

Things I wish I had known about starting a business:

  • It’s not always easy.
  • You can’t do it all on your own and it is good to know your weaknesses. For example, learning to do my own Quickbooks (and understanding it) and knowing when it is the right time to call your accountant.
  • It is true that sometimes you have to spend money to make money….it is just finding the “right” things that will increase brand awareness and (best of all) drive sales.

Hope to see you at the upcoming event. I look forward to answering more questions and sharing other tips I’ve learned along the way.
