Get Ready for Your Next Big Event

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Event planning can be a tough job with high-stress, but somebody’s got to do it! We applaud those who bravely tackle weddings, auctions, galas, etc. without breaking a sweat. And for those of us hiring these superhuman beings here’s a list of whom you should call next time you need a little behind-the-scenes magic.

Events of Distinction
Specializing in weddings, Events of Distinction can help you plan your perfect day in many different ways. From books to classes to hiring their services, you don’t have to be alone. Joyce Scardina Becker let us in on a little secret. Planning a wedding is fun! It’s the media who says it’s stressful. We’re not too sure that planning your own wedding would be stress-free, but we know whom we’ll be calling when the question is popped.

Cross Marketing
For those of you who have a business event that needs planning, look no further than Cross Marketing. From fashion shows to grand openings, Claudia Castillo Ross can handle it. We know how important marketing a business is and a great event will be the talk of the town! One thing we really love about Cross is her passion for philanthropy. Many of her events benefit amazing causes—now that’s something to celebrate!

Andrea Event Production
Andrea Coen lives to celebrate. She also lives to help YOU celebrate! Anything from friendship to romance to success or a good cause, Andrea Event Production does it all. Their experience in creativity and design shows in everything they do (even their website!). We also love peeking into Andrea’s Little Black Book for helpful tips and ideas for events. But keep that on the DL.

Fashion Sense is a Relative Term

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

In honor of the recent Fashion Week hoopla, I thought I’d share my fashion “sense” and I use that term quite loosely. For those of you that have read the CRAVE Crack Up blogs, you’ve quickly come to learn I am “challenged” in many areas of my life that include domestically, home interiorally, culinarily, and more. Fashion is no exception….I have narrowly escaped being featured in the black-boxed face photo in many a fashion magazine.

Every Spring I am inspired to clean out the closet, buy some colorful shoes and skip around looking cute. I pledge to wear a pretty floral print dress just because they look so dang fun on the TV ads but then realize I would actually have to shave my legs.

I adore all the fabulous sunglasses but find myself still sporting the $3.99 pair I bought at the Ritzville AM/PM after a long night. I vowed to never buy expensive eyewear because I was sure I’d lose or break them…these signature shades I picked up near the corn dogs have lasted me five years, naturally!

Each April I travel to Las Vegas for some much needed girl fun. One year I committed myself to having the right “Vegas” shoes, so I splurged. I found just the right pair of smoking hot black strappy pumps. When I got there, I made it from my room to the elevator in the hotel before I had to return to the room for my flip flops. They looked super cute in the pre-func party pics though.

A southern friend once sent me a Spring purse set. By “set” I mean that it looked like one of those Christmas dolls that you open and find 15 more mini-Christmas dolls inside, only this had a matching wallet, sunglass case, etc., it had a million pieces. I had no idea what to do with all of them but they sure were cute. Don’t be surprised that I don’t have a purse “set”…I just recently realized you should have more than one bag for different seasons.

Speaking of seasons, when I lived in the south I was outcast due to my major faux pas of wearing white heels before Easter. Silly me, it had been 80 degrees since New Year’s Eve so I figured white shoes with my cute floral skirt would work. The fashion police literally showed up and locked me in a dressing room at Dillard’s until Easter for that high crime.

You might say I am a “function over form” kind of gal. I am all about comfort and all my jeans have to do is at least accommodate my cell phone and lip gloss.

I do love coats, it’s a strange addiction but I must have a hundred in my closet. Ok, 50% are fleece, but I do dig the outer layer action. Funny thing is I am always so warm, I rarely wear them, not just because most of them would look ridiculous with my floral dress but also because I don’t want to be bothered with carrying one around. I would probably leave it in some coat check somewhere and lose it….like my $3.99 expensive eyewear.

Here’s to putting on a pretty floral dress and skipping around looking cute this Spring!

CRAVE’s Blogs to Follow

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

You can find a blog about anything these days, and you can find just about anyone writing blogs too. But some blogs are more worth reading than others. CRAVE knows a good blog when it sees one. Do you subscribe to blogs? Well you should! Here are some local reasons why!

She Just Walks Around With It
Most personal blogs you read you think, why do I care about your life? Why do I want to read about it all day? Frankly, I don’t! But not Kristy Sammis. Her blog, “She Just Walks Around with It,” is incredibly funny. Her hilarious approach to everyday life we all can relate to has us “LOLing all over the place.” She covers weight-loss and wine and everything in between. One of her blog posts received so much fanfare that she created another site, Promtacular! Don’t miss her section of personal favorites. Our personal favorite? That’s a tough one. We love any of the ones with pictures—she does her own illustrations!

Just Something I Made
Just Something I Made is a great blog to check into on a rainy day. Cathe Holden is full of ideas and creativity, and she loves sharing them with you! She has now created a page that links to all of her DIY projects throughout her blog! We especially love the Playing Card Décor and the Dress Form Re-Do projects.

Poetic and Chic
This post wouldn’t be complete without a blog about fashion. Who doesn’t CRAVE fashion? Poetic and Chic does. From interviews with designers to reviews of collections, Annie Wilson covers it all. Not only does she cover fashion, but she blogs about art and culture—anything that inspires her. She is an inspiration to us! Interview with Derek Lam? Hello?! Don’t you wish you had a blog too? Now go ahead and start one!

CRAVE up your St. Patrick’s Day

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

St. Patrick’s Day is tomorrow and whether you are of Irish heritage or not, it is a great excuse to dress up in green, drink Guinness and eat corned beef and cabbage. In case the traditional Irish feast isn’t your thing we have come up with a few cool ways that you can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your girlfriends. So grab your green, your “Kiss Me I’m Irish” sticker and a few gal pals and celebrate with us! Erin Go Bragh!

Coordinate a cocktail party with you gal pals using this fabulous party guide from Girlfriend Celebrations. Get cocktail creative with green drinks that aren’t beer. Pair these with fabulous green snacks and appetizers. Finish off the Irish ambiance by playing Celtic music in the background. As a fun party activity everyone can plant individual clovers and each guest can take home a pot to remind them of their fabulous friends.

Not into food and games? Coordinate a gift exchange with girlfriends and require that everyone purchase something that is authentically Irish. Set a spending limit so everyone gets something fun.

This year the holiday is celebrated on a Wednesday so if you aren’t in to going out and partying hard consider spending a night in watching movies. Use food coloring to dye your popcorn green and pop in a Irish “chick-flick” like PS I Love You, Tristan and Isolde , or Leap Year. All St. Patrick’s Day rules still apply so make sure your PJ’s are green!

If you want to go all out and spend the night on the town check out this fabulous St. Patrick’s Day event guide and find out what fun St. Patty’s festivities are happening in your area.

We wish you the “luck o’ the Irish” this year as you celebrate with friends. And no matter where or how you celebrate remember the old Irish adage “Before you call for one for the road be sure you know the road.” Slàinte

Emily Howard has Moxie!

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Emily Howard may be small, but she’s got a big personality! The owner of Moxie Parlour shares with us her secrets, her indulgences, and things she loves.

How would you describe your business in 3 adjectives or less?
Experienced, artistic, warm.

What are your most popular products or services?
Haircuts and color are our only services. We sell the entire Bumble and Bumble line, including the treatment line. We also sell a few of our favorite products from Purology and Davines. Our best selling product changes often but we really like to use surf spray for a flicky beachy texture now that spring is here.

People may be surprised to know…
The owner of the salon is bald.

What was the inspiration or motivation behind starting your business?
After working in large upscale salons and smaller ones, I took what I loved from both and created a little haven of my own. I also wanted a place where I could see people privately, as I have many clients that prefer visiting when we have the place to ourselves. My primary motivation behind starting my own business was the challenge–it was just time to take the next step in my career.

Who is your role model or mentor?
I have several new models and mentors every day. Currently, I see a creative coach named Wickie who inspires me to accomplish my artistic endeavors. I’d like to do the same for others one day. A celebrity role model would be someone like Anne Magnison. She seems creative, gutsy, intelligent, and extremely talented. So I guess you could say I am impressed with people who exhibit MOXIE!

How do you spend your free time?
I love taking classes, continuing education in the salon industry, or in a few other things. I love making and watching documentary videos and films, chilling out with my two dogs and cat, and singing karaoke, especially power ballads.

What is your indulgence?
Currently my indulgences include tattoos and black t-shirts, I can never have enough!  And of course, there is always the indulgence in cupcakes….

Where is your favorite place to go with your girlfriends?
Favorite places to go with friends include cafes, walks, parks, karaoke booths, movies, motorcycle rides I’m a passenger) and to their apartments. I love being in spaces that are extensions of my friends’ personalities.

Where is the best place to get a manicure/pedicure?
There is a place not far from Moxie Parlor called Simply Unique Nails. I think its the best because they are always welcoming, remember my name, have excellent customer service, keep a pristine environment, and above all paint my toenails blue or glittery

Where is the best place to find gifts?
I like stores that carry craft and DIY one-of-a-kind gifts. Most of the time I will browse local stores like Rare Device, Therapy, The Curiosity Shop and Paxton’s Gate. Why? I like to give unusual and random gifts. The kinds that people thank you with a question mark!? I like gifts that you can push pin to your wall no matter where you are living.

What is your favorite salon?
My favorite salon is obviously my own, but I will say that I spend a lot of time at other salons taking classes and visiting friends. Most recently we did a great class at my friend Deena’s shop called Glamarama. I also frequent Dipietro Todd in downtown SF. I have some good acquaintances that teach in the academy there. Constant inspiration.

Where is the best place to buy shoes?
Funny you should ask about shoes. I am recently going through a transition of weaning off of platforms! This is not easy for a 4’11” hairdresser, as we spend much time tippy-toeing even when our hydraulic chairs are as low as they can go. The John Fluvog store and a local store called Shoe Biz have been there for me, but truly nothing will be the same as finding a pair of cool boots or shoes, bringing them to the cobbler on Guererro and 14th St. in SF and asking him to make them (me) taller.

Where is the best place to buy clothes?
I don’t have a lot of luck with buying clothes, so when I do find something that I like, I’m that girl that usually buys six of the same thing. I’m not a label worshiper; I just want my stuff to fit right. Seems like the best place to get clothes is always in my friends’ closets.

Who is the best local designer or artist?
There is an artist named Cate White in the east bay that I admire a lot. Her art is honest, audacious, and hilarious. I have an amazing collection of her multi media work, paintings, and her zines.

What is the best gym or fitness club?
I am currently a member at Club One in San Francisco, although I don’t visit as much as I would like. The Fillmore location is sort of a little underground hideout, which I like. I can’t say I always feel great when I enter, but I always feel great afterward.  The best gym or fitness club in my opinion does not exist yet. And now that I am thinking about it, maybe that’s next on my list…!
