Shop Local This Black Friday

Friday, November 26th, 2010

As consumers flock to large retail chains at ridiculously early hours of the morning in the hopes of saving a few bucks on that one special gift, the term, “Black Friday” suddenly seems quite fitting. While we are bombarded with promises of unbelievably low-priced electronics and special gifts with a purchase of lingerie, why not take a breather and spend your Friday browsing some amazing finds in Tampa Bay’s local shops.

For the sister who must be unique, a bracelet owned by half of Tampa simply will not do. Accessoreez, by Leslie Belcher, features a beautiful selection of handcrafted jewelry. Inspired by nature, these breathtaking pieces include hot fired glass, freshwater pearl and turquoise accents. Can’t decide on an accessory? Sweet treats are always welcome. In particular, a gift from Viktoria Richards Chocolates would be absolutely divine. With different shapes and even printed with stylish colors, these chocolates are almost too pretty to eat.

Speaking of eating, who doesn’t love a nice meal? A trip to Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café will be one gift they won’t want to return. Guests can view unique art while enjoying an appetizer, and even enjoy a live show. Restaurant gifts are always appreciated, especially for the gal who may be a bit culinary challenged.

After shopping for your human family, please do not neglect your furry companions who show you love all year long. Groovy Cats & Dogs provides a variety of healthy products to help give your loved one a long and happy life. Once Fluffy has been well fed, bring her over to Rover Done Over to be fully pampered with services ranging from nail trimming to polishing, and even blueberry facials!

From people to pets, young to old, take a break from the malls and take advantage of our fabulous local businesses this Friday. I guarantee you will find some great deals without the stress of being trampled in an overcrowded department store.

Take a Deep Breath…

Nestled right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Howard Avenue is a quaint bungalow that offers an oasis of healing and relaxation. With the siren song of “Beauty, peace and vitality,” Palm Wellness Center and its owner, Natalie Maddox beckon the weary South Tampa passersby to stop and enter. Once inside, cool pastel-colored walls, luxurious and breezy fabrics, cushy furnishings and mellow, soothing scents and sounds mix together to offer up the atmosphere needed to deliver on Natalie’s promise to “soothe your senses and absolve life’s stresses.”

While health and holistic healing and the effectiveness of alternative medicines were something that Natalie experienced first-hand during her youth, her initial educational pursuits focused on the “traditional” Western sciences. Natalie graduated from the University of South Florida with two degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry.  She graduated and studied microscopic chromosomes for a genetics company, but it wasn’t long before she felt like she could do something more to directly help people live healthier, more balanced lives. Natalie followed her instincts and enrolled in the East West College of Natural Medicine in Sarasota where she received her Master’s degree in Oriental Medicine.

Oh, and by the way, did we mention that Natalie managed her new education and metamorphic career change while also continuing to dance and entertain as a Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleader?!?!

Get to know this dynamic CRAVE woman by visiting Palm Wellness Center and taking advantage of their wide range of services, including Acupuncture; Barre, Pilates and Yoga; and facials/beauty treatments. Acupuncture is offered to those seeking a holistic alternative to treating ailments and disorders. “I have personally benefited from the effectiveness of these treatments,” explained Natalie. “I suffered chronic back pain in my youth and acupuncture relieved the pain and allowed me to be able to continue dancing.”  In addition, Barre, Pilates, and Yoga classes are offered (in group or individual settings). Palm Wellness rounds out their health and beauty offerings by providing beauty treatments such as organic facials, waxing, and eyelash care.

Palm Wellness Center is located at 1310 S Howard Ave in Tampa, FL 33606.  Check them out online at www.palmwellness.com.

Capturing the Moment

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

In life we experience some great moments we never want to forget. Even so, our minds tend to draw a blank as the years go by. Memories are best remembered through a photograph. That’s why one of CRAVE’S women entrepreneurs, Nicole Gellar has taken her photography sessions to the next level by capturing the moments naturally. In other words, with kids and pets being her specialty, she believes that letting a child be a child will help to create photographic moments to share in the future.

I can imagine how difficult it can be to perform petrography. Getting your little pooch to stay, strike a pose and not chew on the set can be challenging. I have had past experiences with my dog, Lola and photography. She chewed Santa’s beard last year…ugh poor Santa! Nicole has a way with photographing pets and capturing the happiness in their faces and other nonverbal expressions. This year, Lola will be going to see Nicole!

Nicole has recently developed a new program for high school seniors called “Tampa Teen Connection.” This is an educational and teen board program that gives high school seniors a chance to learn more about themselves, local Tampa businesses, and a chance to model for newspapers ads or magazine ads. The program is designed to introduce seniors to life after high school.

If you’re looking to capture life’s precious moments, spend some time in Nicole’s studio with pictures you’ll love forever! For more information visit: nicolegellerphotography.com

Suffering from Skin Damage this Summer? Fight it with these Foods!

Monday, August 16th, 2010

We all want beautiful skin, especially during the “skin showing” months of summer. So how do we get it without spending a fortune at the Clinique counter? By eating antioxidant rich foods, that’s how. Your skin, just like every other organ in your body, needs antioxidant laden foods to keep it healthy and toxin free. Here are some of the most important foods to eat for beautiful skin. Try to get these delicious foods into your diet as often as possible and I promise you will love the results.

Foods for beautiful skin:

Sunflower seeds, Swiss chard, and almonds- What do they all have in common? Vitamin E! Vitamin E works to protect skin from ultra violet rays and rejuvenate the cells. Sauté swiss chard with garlic and olive oil and top with a mix of toasted almonds and sunflower seeds. Vitamin E never tasted so good!

Cauliflower, walnuts, and cabbage- Did you think wild salmon was the only place to get Omega 3 fatty acids? Well get excited because they are in vegetables too! Omega 3’s are essential in creating beautiful skin for they help maintain cell membranes. It is these membranes that act as barriers for the body, letting water and nutrients in, and keeping toxins out. Make an easy cabbage slaw topped with walnuts then steam cauliflower and serve with a lemon tahini sauce (also packed with Vitamin C). After these two dishes, your skin will be good to go!

Carrots, Kale, and Apricots- Not only are these foods quick and easy to get your hands on, they also serve up a giant does of Vitamin A (aka Beta Carotene). Vitamin A is involved in the repair and growth of body tissues, which is particularly beneficial when dealing with sun damaged skin. Stir-fry carrots and kale with garlic, ginger, and soy sauce for a great side dish. For the apricots, try throwing them on the grill for a great summer dessert!

Bell peppers, broccoli, and strawberries- Loaded with more vitamin C than an orange, these foods work to create collagen in the skin and protect your lovely epidermis from oxidative stress. Best ways to eat them? Grill the peppers and broccoli or eat them raw with hummus. As for strawberries, just pop them in your mouth (or put them in a crisp).

Shitake mushrooms, cod and shrimp- Mushrooms (both shittake and crimini), cod, and shrimp are chock full of selenium, a potent nutrient that promotes skin elasticity and quality. Broil cod with a fresh tomatoes and basil. For the shrimp and mushrooms, toss them into an easy Thai curry. So good!
