Put A Twi$t On Your Business Model

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

As a business owner I know you are working very hard in your business, serving clients and staying on top over everything else that needs to be managed.

But what if all the hard work you are currently doing is not necessarily the most effective way to grow your business?

A solid business is built around a business model that works. If you think you have a great business model in place then it will only take a few minutes to confirm that this is the case.

If you aren’t quite sure if your business model is functioning optimally, now is the perfect time to give it a quick check-up and find out.

When I talk about your business model I simply mean the way your business makes money. Think about these basic components:

* Your business offer products and services

* You sell them for a certain price

* A certain number of people buy them (once or even better, repeatedly)

* You deliver them in a certain way (in person, electronically, third party, etc.)

Why not revisit your business model to see if there are a few ways you can change it. This doesn’t have to be complicated, simply take a piece of paper and a pen or open a new file on your computer.

Write down all the products and services your business currently offers, the price for each, how many clients you have who purchase each offer and how frequently. Total this up, subtract your costs, and see if this structure is going to bring you the financial results you want.

Now imagine how many different ways you can upgrade your business model to attract more business and leverage what you already have.

Get creative and try out several combinations of products and services. Here are some ideas:

- Perhaps you can add something new, additional revenue streams.

- You can also think about increasing the amount of what you already deliver.

- Or maybe at this point it’s even best to remove a part that isn’t profitable.

- Consider changing the way you deliver your products and services.

- What if you didn’t change a thing except to increase the prices (speaking or pricing, when is that last time you increased the prices for your products and services)?

Let’s use the business model of a consultant as an example.

CURRENT BUSINESS MODEL

Product/Service: Consulting services delivered by the consultant alone

Price: Per hour

Clients: One at a time full time or two to three part-time

Delivery: In person

UPDATED BUSINESS MODEL

Product/Service: Consulting in person delivered by the consultant, additional consultants working for you, speaking, selling intellectual property (an ebook, audio, or other information product)

Price: Consulting per project (and part of the fee for consultants working on behalf of the consultant), speaking per event, intellectual property per item

Clients: Many at one time

Delivery: In person, automated (via the internet)

Are you starting to see the possibilities for your business? Renewing your business model can re-inspire your enthusiasm for what you do as well as increase your desire for marketing your business.

A healthy business model is the foundation for a successful business. Take time to examine your business model and make sure it is the strongest it can be.

With a few simple changes, you will probably make more money and you may even find that you don’t have to work as hard to do so. Now who doesn’t want that!

Berylio-beautiful hand-crafted jewelry!

Friday, November 26th, 2010

I love well-designed stuff. I’m not a picky person, just very observant, noticing the little things intensely. From how food is presented on a plate, to the delicate detailing on a sweater, to the arrangement of flowers in a vase, it’s the workmanship (or work-woman-ship) in the detail that I admire and crave most. I was recently window-shopping and yes, the Christmas windows around the city are exciting and showcase sparkly goods, but nothing caught my attention (to detail that is!). Now, I’m not the grinch…OK, maybe a little picky, but after my unsuccessful shopping I decided to get out of the cold and visit Berylio Jewelry online in the comforts of my own home.

I met Berenice, the designer behind Berylio at our latest CRAVE shopping event and remembered that there was depth and quality in her work and her designs were dynamic and fun. After reading Berenice’s blog and viewing her collections I was so drawn to the energy and creativity that she puts into her craft. Her color schemes, attention to detail, quality of material (semi-precious stones, wood beads, etc) and unique style is so refreshing! What got me more excited was the option to place custom orders (excellent for Christmas), or to book a jewelry party all I have to do is grab my girl friends, bottles of wine, and Berenice’s expertise, and voila! Berenice is a fierce female with loads of creativity and style, be sure to check out her  website and start shopping today!

Interview with Jordan de Ruiter of Sui Generis

Friday, November 19th, 2010

We’ve been searching for the perfect party dress for the numerous Holiday Parties that are about to begin, and we’ve found it with Sui Generis!  Jordan de Ruiter describes her line as “clothing for feminine, confident females who are adventurous and unique.” Sui Generis by Jordan de Ruiter focuses on mostly dresses, tops and rompers that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion!

Join Jordan de Ruiter the evening of December 3rd at the Coal Miner’s Daughter (587 Markham Street, Toronto) for her Sui Generis Trunk Show.  If you can’t make it Friday night, stop by anytime on Saturday December 4th to meet Jordan in person and view her amazing collection!

How would you describe your business in exactly three adjectives?
Feminine. Unique. Classic.

When did you know that you were going to pursue a career in fashion and design?
I always felt like it was something I wanted to do but was nervous to take that step, fashion is a competitive industry! I was asked to start making items for a boutique when I was 16, 4 years ago, and haven’t ever looked back.

What inspired your latest collection?
I did a 6 piece mini collection for Spring 2011, it is very much inspired by gardens and fairy tale stories. It is a very dreamy, girly collection. However the Holiday 2011 collection I am currently designing is inspired by a couple of my favourite Salvador Dali paintings and the styles of the 1920′s. I am really loving where that inspiration is taking me so far and excited to put it into production.

What are your must-have fashion items this fall?
Rompers! Especially with pleating or beading, anything that dresses it up a little bit. Replace your favorite dress with a romper and some tights for a party!

People may be surprised to know…
That although I focus on party dresses I mostly work with cottons, linens, and other natural fibers. People are also surprised when they find out I also don’t use silk. As a vegetarian, it is important to me to keep my line is completely cruelty-free.

Who is your role model or mentor?
I have the best parents in the world who have taught me to do what I am passionate about, and always stay motivated. They inspire me every day! I also wouldn’t be anywhere I am today without the owner of the first boutique I ever sold at, Butter in Collingwood, Ontario. She saw something in me that I didn’t know I could do – thank you Andrea!

What business mistake have you made that you will not repeat?
Underselling my product. It is my advice to everyone starting a business to know your worth! I was shocked to realize I was underselling myself for years and not actually making money!

Where is your favourite place to go with girlfriends?
I love going to a great restaurant or coffee shop! Somewhere we can talk and have fun but still be away from the house!

What do you CRAVE? In business? In life?
To always have passion and love what I do.

Interview with Marcia Livingstone of Co-ordiKnits

Friday, November 12th, 2010

If you’re looking to add a little colour and warmth to your wardrobe this winter, look no further than Co-ordiKnits.  Owner Marcia Livingstone founded the company in 2002 and has been designing her fully accessorized, co-ordinated ladies knitwear line ever since.  Her classically silhouetted pieces, each have a modern twist that will brighten any woman’s wardrobe!

How would you describe your business in exactly three adjectives?
Colourful.  Classic.  Modern.

What inspires your designs?
Inspiration for my designs come from many sources.  I look to vintage patterns for classic silhouettes.  I update traditional, ethnic needlework motifs with my choice of colour and modern fibres.  I see patterns in architecture and antique carved furniture.   A stepped gable on a house in Ghent inspired an unusual shaped v-neck sweater. A floral pattern carved in wood becomes a template for a handmade lace applique.

We love your use of colour – what colour item do you think every woman should own?
Every woman should have a selection of accessories (hat, bag, scarf, gloves) to add a splash of colour to a classic black  wardrobe.  Depending on my mood, I’ll wear a scarlet red or muted rose topper (mid-thigh length sweater) over a classic black column (top and pants/skirt).

People may be surprised to know…
My study of languages led to a desire to travel, which in turn led to my love of traditional, ethnic motifs.

What business mistake have you made that you will not repeat?
I will never again give up creative control to a partner.

How do you spend your free time?
I love to walk through Toronto’s many neighbourhoods looking for patterns in brickwork, fret work, iron work, etc.

What do you CRAVE? In business? In life?
I CRAVE a balance between creative fulfillment in business and  a contented family life.
